Africa-Inspired Downstairs Master "Suite" Experience on the Coast of Maine
Rugged Elegance founders share their national, award-winning Africa safari-inspired Maine home and soulful lifestyle.
******************************************
The space
Asante Sana ( Swahili for "thank you very much" ) has been featured in Veranda Magazine ( search "Veranda" and "Safari" ) and the book, "Veranda Retreats." Their landscape design has won numerous national awards.
• Your guest bedroom suite includes the use of Asante Sana's hot tub and outdoor shower • You don't need to fly all the way to Africa to experience one of the best African-like lodges and bushes on the planet! • Your bedroom suite in the woods / aka "bush" is a six minute walk to one of the softest sandy beaches on the East Coast. You get the energy of the ocean and the peace and quiet of being near the Little River in the Woods! • Park in front of the barn ~ a hop, skip and jump from Goose Rocks Beach • Enter your domain via a private entrance • Fresh brewed coffee or a latte, every morning! • There is simply nothing else like it on the eastern seaboard, if not the world!
Guest access
Your guest suite in the woods includes: Beach towels, two Austrian beach chairs with ottomans and a wagon to get your chairs + gear to Goose Rocks Beach.
Paddle boards and kayaks are available for rent. From your back door, through their "bush" head down The Little River to the Atlantic Ocean. Or borrow Rugged Elegant Jen's two surfboards and drive 7 minutes to Fortunes Rocks, one of the best surfing spots on the Atlantic.
Tim and Jen will help you rent bicycles and direct you to the Eastern Trail or a leisurely 25 mile bike ride into Kennebunkport along Ocean Avenue and back.
Sit by the gas fire with a book, a cocktail and listen to the birds, the ocean and the rustling of the trees.
There is no more idyllic setting in Maine than this!
Interaction with guests
Rugged Elegant Jen, her husband, Tim and their Golden Retriever, Aspen reside at Asante Sana. They are available to not only make you coffee in the morning but they'd be delighted to help you get the most out of your Kennebunkport, Maine get-away once you've arrived in paradise!
Other things to note
Your suite includes: a washer, dryer, separate sink for beachwear, and a coffeemaker!
Our Golden Retriever, Aspen is very friendly. However, we do not allow dogs or other pets at Asante Sana as our home is located on a family compound.

This place is absolutely amazing! So pristine and beautiful - Jen and Tim were gracious hosts and really cared about our well being and making sure we were comfortable during our stay. Magical place!!!
You must stay at least two nights. This extremely well thought out suite is an exceptional spot to stay. African inspired deco along with Italian marble bathroom is wonderful. The outdoor shower, wow! The hot tub and cool plunge pool combo is wonderful to relax to. Our hosts were wonderful!

Bridget,
It’s people like you who further inspire me to share our Africa-inspired soul sanctuary Maine suite with discerning adventurers. Thank you for choosing our special get-away. Thank you for taking the time to write such a fun & thoughtful review! Please come back soon!
Tim and Jennifer were super friendly and very accommodating thru entire lead up and actual stay at their BEAUTIFUL home. Beautiful architecture, private and well thought out amenities, this place is a treat. Waking up and taking a dip in the hot tub was icing on the cake. Plenty to do locally, between having a romantic dinner at Earth at hidden pond, or strolling the beach, this is a true getaway.
We live in a 2D world. This home is 3D. It is the absence of flat, basic, ordinary. It achieves its purpose to invoke serenity, despite it being the essence of luxury. The floors are actual stones, uneven and raw. At first, we feared our backs would not hold up, but by the time we left, we found our bodies craving the barefoot ruggedness. We felt the need to run our fingers along every wall, dresser, floor, bed, anything in our sight because the rich texture of every custom piece is as much a part of the experience as the stunning visual audacity of the home.
We cannot accurately describe the beauty of this property, nor the hospitality of our hosts. Both were beyond belief. Whenever we have looked to rent a VRBO in the past, we are seeking an experience at whatever our chosen destination. Often times the accommodations are just a place to rest. This is different. Asante Sana is the experience, and it is amazing. Thank you Jen and Tim.
This is a property we will never forget and will definitely return to. The family was so amazing checking us in showing us around And even surprising us by making a reservation for a wonderful restaurant. The home was absolutely stunning and so many things to do.
From the minute I messaged Jen and Tim, to our departure we were treated like royalty!
From the hot tub, to the beautiful decor. The shower and robes to the warm welcome, Jen and Tim made us feel like we had arrived in paradise. They were so knowledgeable of the area and we had such a wonderful time visiting and experiencing all their local suggestions. It seemed like there was nothing they wouldn’t do for us and we can not wait to go back again. Thank you!
Hey Jenn! I would like to formally thank you for the beautiful stay we had at Asante Sana. Dinner at 50 Local in town was perfect. The balance between upscale and casual was just what we were looking for. Blake took great care of us and the food was amazing. I had the Lobster Scampi 😁 I slept amazing. Those long goose down pillows were clouds, and I couldn't stop admiring the amazing crochet lobster. I wanted to carry it around with me. The shower and the heated floor in the bathroom - something I dream about for my own home one day. There are books of inspiration scattered around that brought a sense of relaxation and peace.
When the lights are dim in the family room, I really did get a feel of being in Africa. Your home is definitely the most beautiful I have ever seen. Thank you again for everything. 5 stars and two thumbs up 💜

About the host
Hosted by Jennifer Carolyn King
Asante Sana resides on a family compound that has been owned by the King family since the 1930's. Your hosts, Jennifer King & Tim Fredel live in San Francisco nine months of the year and in their Africa-inspired home during the summer and fall months. They run a business called Rugged Elegance. Rugged Elegance is a "soulful" network of social entrepreneurs and philanthropists. The mission of Rugged Elegance is to inspire healthy, adventuresome, soulful living, and philanthropic giving. When Jennifer, Tim and their 300 members identify people, pursuits, products and/or philanthropies that inspire healthy, adventuresome and soulful living they call this "h.a.s. magic." Having traveled throughout Africa on numerous philanthropic missions they experienced h.a.s. magic unlike any other time in life. Having built Asante Sana from the ground up, they decided to share a bit of that magic with family, friends, and now potentially you! And you don't have to go to Africa to there!
Why they chose this property
Every inch of this home is custom-made with Jennifer's design sense, John Saladino and Ivan Chatman's world-class talent, and Stephen Barlow's architectural prowess. Their landscape design by Todd Richardson has won numerous national awards. Plain and simple: You will not experience another property in the United States -- perhaps the world -- like this one!
