About this property

Large bungalow with spectacular views over Stornoway, the Minch and mainland.

Druim Mor House is a large detached modern house located in the quiet crofting village of Swordale, Isle of Lewis. Stornoway is only 7km away and there is a bus stop almost on the doorstep. It has 5 bedrooms, 2 of which are unusually large and appliances include WiFi, tumble dryer, dishwasher, fridges, freezer, 6+ televisions, etc.
Spectacular scenery surrounds this self catering property. You will be mesmerised by the ever-changing light that dances across both land and seascapes. This is an ideal home for groups of friends or large extended families to holiday in. The village is quiet and friendly, whilst the garden is large enough for children to play.
Swordale is located on the Eye Peninsula (Point – An Rubha) which is roughly 11km long. A narrow isthmus, the Braighe is only one mile in length and at one point barely 100 metres wide but it joins Point to the rest of the Isle of Lewis. You can see The Braighe from Druim Mor and you can also see Stornoway, watch the ferry arriving and view the traffic sailing into and out of Stornoway Harbour.
The rest of the Hebrides is open to you: the Isle of Lewis, Gt.Bernera, the Isles of Harris and Scalpay are all within easy driving distance. The scenery en-route is breathtaking. Just a five-minute drive from the house is a popular cafe, shop, wonderful white sandy beach, museum and the ancient ruin of St.Columba’s, Eye Church. The burial ground of 19 of the Chiefs of the MacLeods of Lewis. Ten minutes to the end of Point takes you to Tiumpan Head, here is one of the best places to spot Whales, Dolphins and Basking Sharks in the UK.

Amazing Family Vacation in Stornoway
This large house located in Swordle just 10 minutes from the town of Stornoway has everything you need for a family vacation! 5 bedrooms with lots of room for additional guests, this house is perfect to host large gatherings. It has an amazing view over the water where you can see ships and ferries entering the harbour. My family and I would absolutely come back to Druim Mor when visiting the Isle of Lewis.

A holiday in Lewis and Harris
A great place for our extended family, close to Stornoway but easy for the whole island.

I was born in 1958, have a degree in civil engineering and another in computing. There was no work in Northern Ireland in Civil Engineering in the 80's so I started two IT companies and sold them after 30 years. I bought Druim Mor eventually turned it in to a holiday home. It's been great fun. Much less stressful than the IT business and the people are much less aggressive.

Why they chose this property

People as me why did I buy this property, 400 miles from home. I just tell them to look out the front windows and they see exactly why! Then there is the space inside.

The front of the house is actually the back. We are from Ireland, so the back is the front! Anyway, the front overlooks the sea, the entrance to the harbour, the airport, the town, the mainland, the Isle of Harris and everything in between.

If there was a plan, it was to rent Druim Mor to holiday makers, but we never got around to that until recently.

What makes this property unique

This house has space. That's what one of the big pulls was to me. We have had family groups with the young people downstairs and the older upstairs. We have equipped the two large upstairs bedrooms each with sofas for relaxing. We have put TVs in every room.

The location speaks for itself. You're now on Point, a peninsula that would be an island if it wasn't for a very thin slither of rock that connects Point to the remainder of the Isle of Lewis. That thin slither is known as “The Braighe” (rhymes with “fry”). During winter, the sea powers vertically up The Braighe seawall and produces spectacular effects of towering water fountains. Both sides of The Braighe are worthy of exploration for beaches and the old St Columbus Church (Eaglais na h-Aoidhe) and monument.

We want you to enjoy the views, but we want you to explore the surrounding area too. There are some inland lochs (lakes?) nearby, some beaches and cliffs. Please be careful near the cliffs.

Small bus stop, cafe, shop, walks, beaches and a few sites all nearby, yet still feeling rural. Town is less than 10 minutes away.
