Local Area

Situated in a rural area on a hill close to the Georgian market town of Richmond and the rural villages of Marske, Grinton and Reeth.

Getting there

For satnav purposes, the postcode is DL11 7LX, but bring these directions with you as well, in case the satnav takes you to the wrong place.

If travelling from the south via the A1:
At present the A1 is being upgraded to motorway between Leeming Bar and Scotch Corner. Follow signs to Richmond. Once in Richmond itself, follow signs for Reeth (A6108). Approximately 4 miles beyond Richmond on the A6108, turn right at a sign for Marske, Marrick, Hurst. Marske is a mile along this road. Turn right just after the 30mph signs, at the first junction you reach in Marske (the junction has a grassy triangle and is the lowest point in the village). Keep left at the next junction and almost immediately turn left again into the lane marked Access Only
This is a dead end lane. At the end is a gate, beyond which is a gravelled track. Go through the gate (please leave it as you find it) and along the track through one field. Over a cattle grid and round a bend you come to a cluster of houses, which is Clints. Park on the left and you will see Apple Tree Cottage over the green, just slightly behind Chapel Cottage. The cottage is the left hand end of the terrace, and the door is at the side, under the porch.

Alternative route from the south via Bedale, Patrick Brompton and Downholme (avoiding A1 roadworks and Catterick/Richmond):
Leave the A1 at Leeming and follow signs to Bedale, then at a new roundabout on the edge of Bedale, turn right for Leyburn. Follow this road through Crakehall and just after Patrick Brompton turn right (signed Hunton, Hauxwell, Catterick). Follow this road for a couple of miles. Over the brow of a hill there is a sudden left turn signed Hauxwell and Leyburn. Take this left turn and continue for a couple of miles. At the Give Way sign at an oblique junction continue nearly straight on (signed Leyburn). After about a mile, and a tight left bend, take the next right (signed Wathgill, Richmond, Reeth). Follow the road past Downholme village and continue down the hill. At the bottom of the hill stay on the road where it bends to the right, and continue 200-300 yards to a left turn signed Marske, Marrick, Hurst. Marske is a mile along this road. Turn right at the junction in the village (signed to Whashton and Ravensworth), keep left at the next junction and almost immediately afterwards, turn left into the lane marked Access Only. See the paragraph above for instructions from this dead end road.

Travelling from the North East via the A1:
Turn off the A1 at Scotch Corner and follow the signs to Richmond and then towards Reeth. About 4 miles out of Richmond you will see a right hand turn signposted Marske and Marrick. Follow directions above.

Travelling from the South West via M6:
Turn off the M6 at junction 37 and follow the A684 East through Sedbergh, Clough and Garsdale Head. Just before Hawes turn left towards Hardraw and left over the Buttertubs pass, to Muker and on to Reeth. Go through Reeth, over the bridge, another 1⁄4 mile or so and you will see a left turn on a corner, signed Marske and Marrick – turn left here. After about 5 miles, you will come down the hill into Marske (not signed). Turn left over the bridge (follow the ‘Coast to Coast’ walkers sign). This brings you into the main part of Marske. Ignore one minor left turn marked ‘Private Road’. At the next junction (with a house directly ahead), turn left, and almost immediately left again into a lane marked ‘Access Only’ and ‘no motorised traffic’. This is the dead end road. Follow directions above.

Travelling from the North West
Get onto the A66 and approx. 2 miles after the A67 turn off to Barnard Castle take the minor road to the right marked Reeth. Follow this winding but scenic road to its end at the T-junction. Turn left, still towards Reeth. Follow the road into the middle of Reeth, where you will come to a T-junction (the Buck Hotel is directly on your right). Turn left, go down through Reeth, over the bridge, another 1⁄4 mile or so and you will see a left turn on a corner, signed Marske and Marrick – turn left here. After about 5 miles, you will come down the hill into Marske (not signed). Turn left. This brings you into the main part of the village. Follow directions above.
