About this property

18th century barn couple's retreat in beautiful Devon countryside

A warm welcome awaits you at The Old Barn, Higher Kellacott.
Designed exclusively for couples seeking a peaceful escape to the countryside, this lovingly restored 18th century barn is the perfect space to relax and unwind. The spacious upside down living area features a vaulted cieling & many original features, with spectacular views across surrounding fields from the large upper deck. The ground floor has a beautiful bedroom and luxurious bathroom. Many home comforts & a touch of luxury ensure a memorable stay.

The Old Barn, situated in a peaceful rural hamlet close to the A30, is the perfect base for couples to enjoy an extended holiday or short break. Set in beautiful countryside, with panoramic views to Dartmoor and beyond, Kellacott is just 2 miles from the A30, giving guests excellent access to major tourist destinations, popular Cornish beaches, famous landmarks including the Lydford Gorge, Tintagel Castle, St Michael's Mount, the best of Cornish beaches and numerous National Trust properties. Furthermore, Dartmoor National Park is just 20 minutes drive, offering many beautiful walks, cycling paths and wild swimming pools.

This 18th century stone barn was renovated in 2023, taking full advantage of the size and aspect of the original farm building to create a peaceful retreat for couples wishing to enjoy the tranquil surroundings of the barn, away from the hussle and bussle of everyday life. Enjoy spectacular views from the large upper deck, which provides a wonderful outdoor space for you to relax in the sun with our sheep grazing below.

A large entrance hall features a character oak staircase leading to an upstairs living space with a vaulted ceiling, which provides a wonderful feeling of space where guests can relax and unwind in total peace and seclusion. The seating area features sofas, a 43 inch Samsung smart HDTV, Bose speaker and electric feature fire, and looks out onto a large upper deck with glass balustrade which is accessible through the granary doors. From here guests can relax in the sun overlooking Dartmoor as well as our fields with sheep, geese and hens grazing nearby. The deck, which also enjoys the early morning sun, faces west, so is perfectly placed for guests to enjoy spectacular sunsets.

The ground floor enjoys original barn features, tiled floors and underfloor heating. The large bedroom features a stunning vaulted ceiling with oak beams, exposed stone wall and tiled floor with underfloor heating. The room has a beautiful wooden super king-size bed with luxurious memory foam mattress and Egyptian cotton bedding, plus coordinating antique furnishings. Next to the bedroom is a large bathroom, which features a luxury freestanding corner bath and large walk-in shower.

Despite its rural location, there are many pubs and restaurants in the vicinity, with ample local amenities nearby for groceries; the award winning Strawberry Fields Farm Shop is just a few miles away. Guests can also arrange for online grocery delivery, freeing up time for rest and relaxation.

The Old Barn can accommodate up to two well behaved dogs and guests are welcome to use our fully fenced field as an exercise area, where they can be let off the lead. Being near to Dartmoor, Roadford Lake and many Cornish beaches, there'll always be plenty of walks to choose from. Please see house rules for dogs before booking.

Guests are also welcome to help feed our very friendly sheep, so please do let us know if this is something you'd like to experience during your stay.

Host profile image
My husband David and I moved down to Higher Kellacott in 2017. We enjoy walking on Dartmoor, wild swimming, table tennis, cycling and body boarding. When not on the moors or working on our home, garden and fields, we enjoy family life, catching up with friends, listening to music, reading a good book, listening to the cricket and all things history. I also enjoy National Hunt horse racing. Cooking, home curing bacon and smoked salmon are also interests I pursue. David has been a beekeeper for 30 years and we now run our Nearly Home Honey & Beekeeping business from Higher Kellacott, with an apiary on one of our fields.

Why they chose this property

We love having access to Dartmoor and the wonderful North Devon and Cornwall coastline. Our quiet and remote position ensures we can enjoy the wonderful peace and tranquility that the area offers.

What makes this property unique

Higher Kellacott is situated in a tiny Devon hamlet, where you'll find a small handful of thatched cottages along a narrow country lane. Nestled in a beautiful stretch of Devonshire countryside with far-reaching views to Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor, as the property is in an elevated situation overlooking fields to the horizon. The extensive outside areas ensure you'll be basking in the sun from morning till sunset.
