The historic centre retains its medieval layout, with narrow streets, stairways, and arcades winding among frescoed houses that are built close together. Since ancient times, the village’s way of life and economy have been tied to the artisanal working of iron. The availability of raw materials, due to the presence of iron mines in the valley, made Premana an important economic centre for the supply of military equipment for centuries. Today, its industrial and artisanal production—especially of tools such as scissors and knives—is renowned worldwide and exported to many countries. Premana is also an important starting point for hikes and excursions to the various small lakes and alpine pastures, as well as a base for mountaineering ascents of the area’s peaks. It is one of the towns richest in traditions; among these, the oldest is the “past,” festivals held on the mountain pastures during the summer season.
