About this property

Lakehome near Houghton with Outdoor Sauna!

Three bedroom lakehome 5 minutes from Michigan Technological University, on beautiful Portage Lake. All the amenities of home, including 3 queen sized beds, a pull-out couch, and a twin trundle bed for sleeping up to 10!
New appliances include a full kitchen with a dishwasher, and a laundry in the basement. The main bathroom has a tub/shower, and there is plenty of space to spread out in the living room. Cable TV and WiFi are provided.
The outdoor sauna sits a few steps from the water, and is perfect for sauna / swim activities! There is also a gazebo on the lakeshore that offers a comfortable place to sit with shelter and a great view of the lake and swimming area. The lake bottom is sand and ranges from zero to 4 feet in depth near the dock. A rock fire ring near the lake is a perfect way to spend the evening with friends by the fire, roasting marshmallows.
We have a kayak and two new bikes in the basement that you are free to use to explore the lake, or the miles long waterfront trail from MTU through Chassell. Due to the heavy rains in July of 2018, parts of the trail are closed to the north, but it is open to Chassell.
Portage Lake is a great fishing lake because it is open to Superior, with Walleye, Pike, Bass and much more. The sauna is perfect for summer use, but must be winterized in the fall, October 15th through May 1st.

A relaxing getaway or base for exploring the Keweenaw
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property! The house was spotless when we arrived. Although we were usually out and about experiencing the Keweenaw Peninsula, the house on Portage Lake was a relaxing place to return to each evening. There were 5 of us- my husband and I, my parents, and our 13yo nephew, who enjoyed fishing off the dock with his grandpa, basking in the sauna with his uncle, and kayaking. My mom and I loved the view. I don't think we turned on the TV even once the whole week. It's a great spot for an "unplugged" vacation, though the high speed WiFi works great and we had excellent cell service (Verizon). There are many places in the Keweenaw Peninsula where I was glad I'd downloaded offline maps so we could still navigate in GPS mode, but we had a strong signal at the house. Although the house has a nice "cottage-y" feel, Houghton is just 10 or so minutes away with everything you could want: Walmart, Walgreens, fast food, restaurants and coffee shops. The house includes everything you need for cooking, plus towels, sheets, and plenty of extra blankets, so all we needed to pick up was meals for the week at Walmart and bait, which many gas stations have. The room with the nautical theme is on the side of the house facing the lake. All 3 bedrooms are really nice, though. The room with the queen bed and daybed is the largest and the half-bath is in the hallway just outside it. The full bath is near the other two rooms. My husband really enjoyed taking a cool shower in the hot sauna, and our nephew would shower out there as well, so really just my parents and I used the shower in the house. It was nice having options for everyone, and no one ever had to wait. There are games and puzzles in a closet off the dining room. It would have been fun to take some out to the enclosed lakeside gazebo if we'd been around more. The gazebo has furniture to sit on and a small table. In the yard are chairs around a campfire ring. In the basement is a washer and dryer, and it was wonderful that we were allowed to use it so we didn't have to pack as much. We did just a couple mid-week loads and were good to go for the rest of the trip. The house is centrally located in the peninsula, which was nice since our daily excursions took us anywhere from Copper Harbor to the Porcupine Mountains. It wasn't much more than an hour to get anywhere we went during the week. It was a comfortable, welcoming house, and we would definitely stay there again.

This home was exactly what we expected. Beautiful view, friendly neighbors. We loved walking the path in the mornings, watching the eagle, and just relaxing by the lake. We enjoyed everything!
