Charming and unique loft style apartment in quiet town

We really enjoyed our stay at this charming loft-style apartment in a quiet small-town building from 1910. The space was huge, with an open, airy living area that was perfect for relaxing and spending time together. With three bedrooms and two bathrooms, there was plenty of room for everyone to spread out comfortably. The apartment was well appointed with everything we needed for our stay. As with any historic building, there were a few quirks—like the bathroom lighting being a bit dim and the beds being average in comfort—but overall, these were minor compared to the character and unique charm of the place.Although the listing mentioned a washer and dryer, we couldn’t find them, but we didn’t ask the owner since we didn’t really need them during our stay.If you appreciate spacious lofts with vintage character in a peaceful small-town setting, this is a great place to stay. We’d happily come back!

Historic building makes for great getaway!

Perfect location for jumping off point to the Houghton/Hancock area. Everything was just a described. Loved the mattress topper for the double bed-very comfy. Appreciated Vern for having a slow cooker ready for our use. Vern was also speedy in responding to questions. Protocol for using unit. various nearby items of interest and checkout were very clear. Would certainly stay here again. BTW, this unit would be awesome for a group of guys/gals who love to ride trails on quads/dirt bikes/ side-by-sides as the rv trail is right next to the building! Lots of of hot water for a relaxing shower after getting off of the trails.

All said it done it was a great location, many things to do at the property itself to stay busy (games and wifi with tv.) and lots to do in the surrounding areas. Host was attentive and kind. They stock the house with most of what you need and its good quality items. (Bed linen, toiletries, paper towel ect) Its a repurposed building so it definitely has it quirks. But nothing you wouldn't expect by looking through the listing. If i had any cons it would be that the weekend we stayed it seemed to be a bit of a rougher crowd. Don't know if it was other vacationers or locals but there were a couple loud fights coming from bars and people using excessive speeding up and down the road. I definitely wouldn't say that affected my trip any, would still stay again.

We are amazed at how big this property/apartment was and how clean it was. We have stayed in places where it wasn't as clean and this place was CLEAN. It is also spacious and well-stocked with kitchen gadgets and dishes. The bedrooms are good sizes, cozy and there are 3 of them.We only spent time there at bedtime and breakfast as we were just outside of Houghton-Hancock area and wanted to explore Copper Harbor and the Porcupine Mountains. We did have one evenjng where we watched a movie on Netflix. It was really a nice place to retreat to after a day of hiking and beach combing. We had a lovely stay and again, we were surprised at how big this place was and yet it was cozy. If we ever come back this way, we would definitely stay there again. The host, Vernon, was very quick to respond to any questions we may have. We really appreciate this! Definitely recommend!

We loved the unique spot that had so much history! Loved how spacious it was and the location in a small town, minutes from Houghton. The place was clean and ready to go. The host had maps with suggested areas to check out. We were not on a snowmobile or SxS trip, but the location is perfect for the trails in the area!

Accomodations were great for our group of snowmobilers. We were able to park 2 trucks and trailers in the parking area. Shelving right inside the door was handy for organizing gear. Open floor plan and bar was great. Would stay again!

Spacious

We stayed here while in town for our daughter’s wedding. The reception was right across the street at the Fire Hall. Obviously the location couldn’t have been any better! We had our 7 mo old grandson also and when he was fussy we had plenty of space to push him around in his stroller. Vern was a great host, very quick to respond to questions!

Overall we enjoyed our stay but your place has a few problems. The bathroom ,especially the toilet is difficult to use for elderly and disabled. It is low and is at a wierd angle making hard on bigger disabled people. Some of the building looks like a work in progress. The bunkbed that is in there squeaks something terrible. Every time my son would turn over or get up it would wake us all up. I liked the fact that it basically an antique and I appreciate the efforts that you have made. We loved the spaciousness and the homey feel of the place. Overall I feel you are offering great value and I would highly recommend your place to friends. Thank you for letting us stay there and for replying so quickly to my inquiries.

Might be okay for a group of local guys, but all others be warned. Hostile, run-down area next to a laundromat and dive bar. Sketchy drunk guys watching/following us. Multiple security loopholes in the access system, any of those loiterers outside could breach if they were bored and wanted to. Shoddily repaired window frames, possibly indicating a past break in. If you look at the reviews, another woman mentions people trying to break in during her stay. Finding the "murder hole" was the last straw. It's not uncommon to find tunnels connecting these old storefronts, and the fact that it had a lock for show but wasn't actually locked, nor was it ABLE to be locked made us wonder what kind of an operation is being run here. (Why would someone place a dummy lock on a door?) Appeared to be accessible to other building tenants. I've slept outside with wolves, I've slept in hostels, in Chicago and you couldn't pay me to sleep here. Even worse, when I contacted the owner and politely asked for my money back, he accused me of extortion (like I would bother extorting someone for a hundred bucks!) and insisted that nothing was wrong with the property. I fear for the safety of anyone staying here, especially since the host seems to be completely dismissive of the safety of his tenants. It's evident from the photos that he's okay with a haphazard approach to home renovation, but it's not okay to take a haphazard approach to safety, especially for women & minority tenants.

Why they chose this property

Local businessman Jacob Baer began the construction of this commercial block in 1907 or 1908. However, he was unable to complete construction, and sold the partially finished building to the Kalevan Retaret, a Finnish society. The Kalevan Retaret, or Knights of Kaleva, was a secret society begun in 1898 in Belt, Montana and named after the Kalevala, a collection of epic Finnish poems. The organization was intended to preserve and promote Finnish culture; it quickly spread from Montana to the Finnish miners in the Keweenaw, with a chapter that started in Hancock in 1899 and moved to South Range in 1904. The Kalevans finished the building in 1910 and christened it the Kaleva Temple.

When originally finished, the Temple housed three commercial offices on the first floor and a Finnish social hall on the second floor. Later tenants of the building included the Sons of Italy, a dentist's office, a theater, a restaurant, an opera house, a hardware store, the justice of the peace, and the U.S. Post Office, which was located there from 1915 to 1977.

We have taken this commercial unit and transformed it into a large apartment perfect for nightly and weekly rentals. We look forward to continuing our growth with this unit and providing a great place to stay while you visit the area!
