TIPS
We recommend dedicating a day to visit the charming towns around the lake. Como is the urban center of the area, but the smaller lakeside towns are real gems with stunning villas.
To explore and stroll along Lake Como, especially in the smaller towns, wear comfortable shoes.
There are many public fountains with drinking water in the area, and the water is safe unless otherwise indicated. Tap water is also drinkable. Bring your refillable bottle!
If you’re looking for an easy hike with mountain views, the Greenway del Lago di Como is a scenic and relatively flat trail that connects several lakeside villages from Colonno to Griante. A bus can take you to the starting point in Colonno.
You can also hike from Como to Brunate (or vice versa). There are two main trails and it takes about an hour.
Seek out traditional restaurants to try local dishes, especially those featuring fresh fish from Lake Como.
In Italy, many shops (especially small ones) and services close at midday, so plan your shopping accordingly.
Lake Como is one of the deepest lakes in Europe and the deepest in Italy. Swimming and diving are prohibited in many areas and can be dangerous. However, there are some options for those wanting to enjoy the water. In Como, there is an outdoor pool near Villa Olmo, though swimming in the lake is generally not recommended and often forbidden.
There are some beaches in other lake towns. A charming little beach can be found in Careno — though it may be crowded on weekends. Locals and visitors also love going to Nesso, where brave swimmers dive into the lake from the ancient Roman bridge near the waterfall.
The Lido of Bellagio and the pebbled beach in San Giovanni are great options for those willing to travel and explore the beautiful town of Bellagio, located at the center of the lake’s two branches.
Lake Como lies in a mountainous region. Although the nearby Prealps may not appear very high, the weather is influenced by the surrounding peaks and temperatures can change quickly. Pay close attention to weather conditions during hikes and bring warm, waterproof clothing!
