About Jennifer Wales
Adam and Jen have a deep love and understanding of the natural beauty surrounding the Acadia/Mount Desert Island area. Jen grew up summers on Long Pond and Adam on a 110-acre farm in Western Maine adjoining the Appalachian Trail. They met here in Bar Harbor working as sea kayak guides in the summer of 1993. Over the years, they have hiked, biked, paddled, and sailed every conceivable route on and around Mount Desert. Adam completed his goal of hiking every trail on the Island in the summer of 1994 and Jen authored The Sea Kayaker's Guide to Mount Desert Island published by Down East Books in 1997. Together they paddled the Maine Island Trail, a 175-mile 28-day kayaking trip from Portland to Machias, up the entire Maine coastline. In the summer of 2000, Jen and Adam started Mountain Sea Properties with a single house, Eagle Cliff, where they were married that same summer. The owner had approached them expressing her frustration renting the home through larger rental operations on the island. She complained that her house was one of hundreds represented so the service she received was minimal. She also stated that those who rented the house were not as well informed as they could be. The tenants were also one of hundreds and the service they received was minimal. Adam and Jen offered to represent the house committing to providing top quality service to both owners and tenants by representing a limited number of houses and providing personalized vacation services. Since then, Mountain Sea Properties has grown along with the Wales family. As year-round members of the Island’s community, Adam and Jen are dedicated to the vitality of the people of Mount Desert Island. Thus, each year they donate a portion of their proceeds to local organizations devoted to sustaining the beauty and well-being of the Mount Desert Island area.

A magical time in the woods
We stayed at this property for four days as part of a large group here for a destination wedding. The house was everything we expected and then some. We had eight adults that were very comfortably housed and the living area was wonderful for family enjoyment. The house was spotless upon arrival and everything works! We found that the setting was excellent even for small children. It is convenient to all parts of the island. There was plenty of parking. Our host was readily available. We didn’t actually need them for anything because they were so well prepared.
If you need a location that can house eight adults on Mount Desert Island you couldn’t find a nicer home.
Jen and Adam's home at Fern Way is a wonderful vacation spot! We enjoyed our stay immensely and hope to return again sometime soon! Thanks for everything!
Stocked up and well organized "home"
Great "home" with all essentials including well equipped kitchen, extra linens and bathroom accessories (tissue rolls, shampoos and soaps).
Great location with beautiful front porch sitting area and netted outdoor patio.
The owner, Jen, is very friendly, easy to reach and responsive.
Enjoyed our vacation and we all had a great time at this "home".
Wonderful house with everything you need!
Very cozy and great kitchen!
Great to hear. I love that kitchen as well!
We loved Fern Way as our base to explore MDI. We've rented many homes in many places and this one was stuffed with every imaginable household item you might ever need. We didn't bake any bread in the bread machine but we also didn't want for a good pot or pan or quality knife, that's for sure! One of the drawbacks of some rentals is the lack of 'stuff' that you really need from day-to-day. Not Fern Way!
The home was spotless and we got off to a perfect start w the hand-written note from the Owner and a jar of blueberry jam awaiting our arrival. The location was great - just 15 minutes or so to Bar Harbor and similar to Southwest Harbor and also the primary access to the park loop. The house was very private, which allowed us to just do us and get away from the busier areas of the island. Though we didn't see any moose in Maine we enjoyed the porcupine we nicknamed "Spike" as he/she enjoyed nibbling something tasty for hours in the front yard. Would definitely stay here again.
Ah gee- your making me blush! Sounds like we hit a home run for you family and so delighted you enjoyed Fern Way. "Spike" apparently has been marking the rounds! We have had a porcupine living somewhere near by on our 10 acres of land over the past few years and appeared to find something tasty on the front lawn. Just be sure not to hug him!!
Perfect place for a weekend getaway!
The Fern Way house is a beautiful home! My family and I had a wonderful stay while exploring Maine. I was a little disappointed the house isn't right on the lake! The pictures were a little deceiving, but the drive is only 10 minutes away. Jen was a great hostess. She was very accommodating and responsive to any questions.
I'm sorry to hear that there was any confusion about our photos or how we represented Fern Way. We are not on Long Pond, we are 1/10 of a mile (not quite sure how it takes 10 min to drive there when you can walk it in about 3 min) from the north end of the lake where there is a canoe/kayak rental, boat launch and swimming area. Sounds like perhaps our tenant was a bit confused not only with our listing but also with the area. I'm always more than happy to answer any questions folks have. After 20 years of running rentals, I know that well informed guests always have a better vacation and a more positive experience in our home when they know exactly what to expect.
Located in the heart of Mount Desert Island, Fern Way is no more than 10 min from all attractions including the secluded hidden treasures on the “quiet side” of Acadia National Park. From Bar Harbor and the breathtaking Park Loop Rd to Bass Harbor and its famous lighthouse, you’ll spend more time exploring the wonders of this lovely island and less time getting there. Best of all, it is a short 5 min walk to Long Pond, the largest lake on the island where there is a picnic area, swimming beach, and canoe/kayak rental. Nearby are several other treasures of Mount Desert Island including the Beech Mt. hiking area, Beech Hill organic farm stand, and the village of Somesville and Somes Harbor where you can access the free island wide shuttle bus.
As part of our vacation services offered to our tenants, we have put together a local dinning guide, a guide to the supermarkets, specialty food stores and farmers markets, a first timers guide to Mount Desert Island, as well as local recommendations for traveling with kids. We offer various vacation services and publish a monthly travel guide to Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island with local coupons. Anyone can sign up at our website by searching Mountain Sea Properties.
