This historic home was once rented to the poet Elinor Wylie and also to Thomas Berger, author of “Little Big Man.” Until its recent sale in 2022, the home remained in the Somes family and was well-loved by those who had the fortune of being in residence, either year-round or seasonally.

We had a wonderful time at Willowbrook! It was the perfect space for 6 adults, 2 kids and one dog. The location was convenient to everything on MDI. We would stay at Willowbrook again
The roominess of the house and yard served our needs very well. The history of the house made the whole stay very special. The surrounding area was beautiful. Have the free shuttle bus stop right in front of the house was very convenient.
If you are looking for a stay that is filled with historical significance then Willowbrook is perfect! My family and I enjoyed staying in this home that has stood the test of time and is rich in local history. The location was very picturesque and was perfect for us.

Great house . Unexpected plumbing issues were addressed immediately. Pros: Good location and lots of space to spread out (11adults). House was well furnished with needed dishes/ pots/sppliamces. Would definitely stay here again. Cons: Low slanted ceilings resulting in head bumps. Also, shower on main floor not for anyone with mobility issues-need to climb into clawfoot tub.
This charming and antique house was excellent for our group of 8 friends. Plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms and different hang out spaces. We loved it.

The arrival to the property is so easy from Bangor airport. I have been to Mt Desert Island many times over the last 60 years, so I’ve learned to stay on the Quiet Side. And Somesville is my favorite place on the island anyway! The home is comfortable and seems to lack any essential. With nine of us we provided extra TP and paper towels. We were all comfortable with our chosen bedrooms, and once the showers were figured out all was good. We would most definitely consider renting Willowbrook when we return. Loved it!!! Thank you, owners, for sharing your treasure.

Really neat historic home. Lots of nooks and crannies. Kitchen has been redone and really nice. Plenty of room for lots of people with big dining room and two sitting areas. Beds were really nice. Close to lots of hikes and lobster restaurants. Great place.

The property is beautiful, we loved the historic home! I grew up in a home older than this, so I can appreciate the quirks of an older house. The view from the front porch and windows was amazing, and the famous bridge is right across the road. The kitchen is very well stocked, we had everything we needed and more. I will say, this is not the property for people with mobility issues- the only bathtub/shower on the first floor is difficult to get in and out of and the stairs to the second floor are a bit steep. Most of our party had no issues, just something to be aware of. The living area was large enough for many people to gather, but had only 1 comfortable sofa, the other sofa and chairs were not comfortable at all. The beds were comfortable as well.
Historic, spacious and well-maintained property with great location between Acadia entrances, Bar Harbor, NE Harbor and SW Harbor. Clean, comfortable home enabling multiple generations or groups to stay together yet maintain privacy. Multiple A/C units throughout house is a nice plus. Usual quirks of any "vintage" home, but overall very high quality.

The house is full of history and so well decorated. It does come with the standard old house “charm”. Bathrooms are old and almost every door sticks, but the house does plenty to overcome the issues with superb decorations. The location is great with the best view around. The only downside to the location is the main road that has heavy traffic.

Mr. Gallic,
Thank you for you comments and we are so glad that you enjoyed your stay. Your feedback is very important to us and future tenants. The bathrooms are indeed “old” - installed in the early 1920s and reportedly the first indoor plumbing on MDI! That said, the owners have finally found an “Enamaler” - it’s a vanishing art - to refresh the original fixtures. We hope to have “gleaming old” bathrooms for your next stay!
Kind regards,
Marla Jones

Great old house with tons of charm. There were so many rooms it took a few days to figure out where everything was!
Ample kitchen supplies, nice backyard, great views. We had three cars and were able to park them easily in the yard. Four would probably be doable.
Lovely place, we were all satisfied and would happily stay there again :)

This house is perfect for a family vacation! It is well preserved with a wonderful historic vibe and yet comfortable and homey. Once we moved a few things to higher shelves we did not have to remind the little ones not to touch! The location is amazing with water views of Somes Sound and an adorable tiny library across the road. The historical society, art gallery and huge back yard gave lots to do without driving. Plenty of access to the park without the crowds of Bar Harbor. Just what we were looking for!

Incredible house with lots of room for the whole family. My only complaint was the living room furniture. Not a comfortable place to sit. But the kitchen dining room bathrooms and bedrooms were all perfect and the grounds were immaculate. We will be coming again. Thank you so much

Charming old house with plenty of room for groups to spread out. The remodeled kitchen has great appliances. The only negative is the antiquated plumbing in the bathroom sinks and showers/tubs -- house description mentions that BUT they need to be moved to the museum next door and some 21st century faucets and showers put in.

Thank you for leaving a review for Willowbrook, Evelyn. We are so glad you found the house to be spacious for your large group and I appreciate your responsiveness during your stay.
We completely understand that some guests may find the older bathroom fixtures to be a challenge. The owners may replace or donate at some point but for the time being, they decided to keep them as they added character to their historic home.

Family vacation with 10 'senior' adults. The farmhouse was lovely/charming. It reminded us so much of the farmhouse we grew up with in NY.(Including bumped heads on slanted ceilings!;-)
The owners have done such a nice job of keeping the setting of this historic house true.
The location was perfect for watching the sunrise from the front porch, to walking across the street to the historic garden and bridge.
One caveat thought is that because the farmhouse has been kept true to its history, this would not be ideal for anyone with mobility issues.
We all agreed we would love to come back again. We loved it

Our stay at this property was very nice and was surprised to find its historic importance in the area as it was the home of the Somes family.
This home was close to everything we wanted to do, plenty of room for everyone in our family of twelve, 7-78. Grandma and Grandpa remained on the main floor while the younger ones found plenty of beds upstairs to accommodate. My only home suggestion would be new mattresses.
The yard was a great place to gather after a busy day, sit around the fire or have dinner from the grill, play games, and roast s'mores. Adirondack chairs would be wonderful around the nice large pit. With the weather so welcoming it was a nightly gathering space.
Kitchen worked well with a table and chairs, laundry, all convenient in a busy home.
Couldn't ask for a prettier or more convenient area, directly across from bus stop, pond, library and historical society, and just minutes to Acadia National Park, and downtown Bar Harbor.
Very pleasant stay.

My family and I stayed here for a week together and had a great time, and with just a few updates it could be 5-star imo. Pros and cons (for our party) below:
Awesome things:
- historic charming house: so many nooks and crannies, wonderful charming decor, the kids (and I!) just loved to explore it
- space: it easily and comfortably housed 12 people (9 adults, 3 kids). Rooms were big and spacious and comfy. I slept VERY well.
- the VIEW: we didn’t see this in the original listing but the view from the front porch was amazing, especially at sunrise
- check in was very easy as host is communicative
Negatives
- a lot of the old doors don’t close or are very hard to close, including one to the outside. One to the back always has to be locked even though we wanted to go in and out because otherwise it wouldn’t stay closed. We used a chair to keep it closed if we wanted to be in and out but didn’t want kids wandering unsupervised in and out
- yard isn’t completely fenced in: this is fine for adults but if you have kids or dogs you def want to watch them closely as the house is on a busy street
- not super clean and hard to keep clean as we couldn’t find a broom or anything to help ourselves
All around we had a lovely time in this charming piece of Maine history.
