About this property
Jackdaw Cottage, fully restored traditional Irish cottage
A lovingly restored 200-year-old Irish cottage near Castlewellan near the Mourne Mountains - one of Northern Ireland’s most scenic regions.
• Four bedrooms & three bathrooms • Hand-built kitchen • Open hearth fireplace and wood-burning stove •Off-grid power by solar panels • Sleeps 8 comfortably
Whether you’re hiking mountains, walking beaches, exploring film locations, or just curling up by the fire, Jackdaw Cottage is the perfect peaceful getaway or an adrenaline filled Mourne adventure!
Jackdaw Cottage is a lovingly restored Irish Cottage with beautiful panoramic views of the Mournes and Slieve Croob and Dromara hills. It has charm and character in every room you enter. Whether it's relaxing on cosy seats by the fire or cooking up a dinner in the Cottage kitchen
Jackdaw Cottage is the most beautiful picturesque cottage you will find. A completely private location 400m up a private lane means complete privacy and relaxation. With two king size beds and two double beds, our four bedroom cottage can easily sleep 8 people. With exposed beams, beautiful wooden doors and beautiful handmade timber sliding sash windows, you'll never want to leave Jackdaw Cottage. The house is powered via solar panels so we are completely off-grid!
A three year restoration project was undertaken by myself, Chris Murphy to restore this beautiful cottage. The last person to live there died in 1859! And the house lay derelict until 1970 when it was converted into a cattle quarantine centre for cattle being exported all over the world from Ireland! Then in 2022 I bought the house and saved it from demolition as it was for sale as a building site. Instead of allowing someone to destroy this beautiful property, I restored it back to its former glory! The name Jackdaw Cottage was given to the house by my neighbour, when I was restoring the property at the beginning I was bombarded by jackdaw birds trying to nest inside the house and chimneys which they had been doing for generations. The birds saw it as their house, not mine! So rather than fight them I built little nesting holes in the walls of the house and they nest there now instead, the name Jackdaw Cottage was to simply acknowledge them! A huge amount of late nights, dedication and hard work went into this restoration but all worth it to bring this cottage back to life and welcome guests from all over the world! NI tourism board certified!
You have sole use of the entire property. Dogs are allowed. Please message beforehand regarding bringing dogs along as there are horses, sheep and cattle in the surrounding fields. A lockbox is provided outside for remote check-ins for people arriving late etc. We also have a huge garden so perfect for a group get together and kids! My phone number is on the guest book and I'm available anytime if any problem should arise. Ample parking is available all around the cottage front and back.
