About Tim Calkins
My grandparents purchased land on Long Lake almost 100 years ago. The property is still owned by the family. We also own the nearby woods; we protect the area. It is a unique and special retreat. We rent the property a few weeks each year to help cover the rather large Michigan property tax bills!
Tim Calkins purchased this House in 2000
Why Tim Calkins chose Traverse City
Loon Lodge feels like a remote retreat, nestled deep in the woods. In reality, it is just 15 minutes from lively Traverse City.
What makes this House unique
Our home has three very special features. First, it is right on Long Lake, a spectacular northern Michigan lake. The water is clear and the sunsets are beautiful. Loons nest on the lake, and you can often hear their haunting calls. The lake is great for swimming and boating. Second, the house is very private. It is situated in the deep woods on a huge lot with lots of lakefront. Third, the house is near Traverse City, so while it feels like you are really away from it all in the deep Michigan woods, you can get to a store quickly if you run out of flour or want to go to a movie.

Love the Loon Lodge!
My family of 5 just spent a week at Loon Lodge. Upon arrival, the cottage was sparkling clean and smelling fresh. Linens, towels, paper supplies, garbage bags, etc, were all fully stocked. The layout of the house was nice; giving my husband and I privacy and the kids space to roam. Long Lake is just beautiful. Clear waters and warm temperatures made it perfect for swimming and boating. Loved the location as well, everything we wanted to do was within a 15 min drive. We hope to return someday!
Rustic cottage with lake view.
A beautiful and relaxing place to stay for our family. The directions provided were easy to follow. The cottage was well stocked with all necessary items.
Loon Lodge could not be more of what we were looking for. Tucked away in the woods, right on the lake, yet only ten minutes to downtown Traverse City.
The cottage had every thing we could want. Tim was extremely easy to work with. My wife is already planning our trip back.
Wonderful vacation spot!
The property and lake were fantastic. The cabin was exactly as described and provided a cozy place to relax in between adventures. The location is great for adventuring out to parks, Traverse City, and other near by attractions. Overall it provided a wonderful family vacation for us and we highly recommend Long Lake and Loon Lodge!
Thanks for visiting Loon Lodge! I am delighted to hear that you had a good visit to Traverse City. I hope you can make it back before too long.
We had a great stay. Property feels secluded, but it's close to so many things, especially Moomers Ice Cream! We brought our boat & even caught some good sized Bass, Pike & a small Perch. The water is amazingly clear!
Loon lodge was wonderful!!! We had a wonderful time. Really enjoyed the outdoor deck and surrounding nature.
Northern Michigan is a vacation paradise. Traverse City is a charming town with a cute shopping district as well as all the usual larger retailers. The area is full of beautiful inland lakes, in addition to spectacular Lake Michigan and the Sleeping Bear Dunes.
At the house, you can swim in the clear waters of Long Lake, lay in the sun, paddle around the lake (canoe provided!) and hike. There are five islands in Long Lake; they are all public and free, so perfect for exploring and picnics. Long Lake has great fishing, too.
There are many attractions near by. The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park is just twenty minutes away. The Platte and Boardman Rivers are great for canoeing. There are wineries, bike trails, Leland (a cute fishing village), hiking trails and breweries. It is a wonderful area.
