House, 1 Bedroom, 1.5 Baths (sleeps 2 with no exceptions), no pets
Mary and Bob Herdegen have family in the area and have been vacationing in nearby Mexico Beach for over 25 years. While this property is new to them, they purchased it from a family who had it in their family since 1938. The new owners hope to honor and maintain the tradition established the family and provide the same wonderful experience for their guests as did the previous owner.

Why Owner chose Port St. Joe
When people visit Port St. Joe, they seem to leave a part of their heart is, quite simply, a very special part of the world. Maybe it is the authenticity of the town. Maybe the Southern hospitality. Maybe the amazing shrimp, oysters, and fresh-caught fish. The historic Cape San Blas Lighthouse was "rescued" from imminent loss along the Gulf and now stands proud and protected in the City limits along St. Joe Bay. A full-moon climb will never be forgotten.
What makes this House unique
Some favorite things to do are to walk the beach, which takes an entirely different feel at different times of the day. At night, take a flashlight on the beach and see thousands or thousands of "ghost" crabs scurrying around the sand; it looks like a far-away planet! Sit on the porch and watch the dolphins swim by. The seafood is amazing, and you can buy shrimp and oysters that were taken out of the water the night before. If you think you do not like oysters, you have never tried an Apalachicola oyster! Sleep with the windows open to hear the din of insect noises and to watch the fireflies from the bedroom window. The board walk to WindMark Beach Village Center is beautifully landscaped, and the Village Center has some amenities worth exploring. If you are inclined to pursue other outdoor adventures, less than 30 minutes away you can enjoy Off the Map Expeditions kayak tour of the Dead Lakes in Wewahitchka and the Estuary Tour of the Apalachicola River. Both are a must-see!

Perfect For Two
This is an excellent location. The area is quiet with lots of walkers and bicyclists making up the traffic going by the house as the street is a dead end and on a walking trail. It was so nice to be able to walk to the beach and to be the only ones on it - especially since the public beach areas were closed. The house itself had all of the amenities we needed. Port St. Joe has a nice downtown without any high rise developments unlike a lot of the Florida Panhandle. Would recommend this spot for those who like to sit on a screened porch and watch the sunsets and for those who enjoy a relaxing vacation.
Bob and I are so pleased that you had a wonderful stay at Alsobrook Cottage, and that you were able to have your getaway before Florida essentially closed its doors.
Thank you for your wonderful review—you
described all of the aspects of the cottage and its location that Bob and I were immediately attracted to, when we were cottage hunting.
We send prayers and well wishes to you and your family in these uncertain times—take care,
This is a charming, well-equipped cottage with an excellent location and attentive owners. The 4 for cleanliness was because the floors seemed pretty dusty under chairs etc - not a very big deal really. The weather could have co-operated a little better but it was a wonderful step up from northern Illinois.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review—Bob and I are very grateful for all of your observations and comments!
The floors should never be dusty, and we have addressed this with our property manager and his cleaning crew. The cottage has been “deep cleaned” again, and the rugs and upholstery steam-cleaned, as well. We are so sorry about your experience, and hope that we will be able to welcome you back in the future.
A fantastic small cottage that is great for couples. The road in front of the house is basically private and only serves the dozen or so houses on the street. I thought the beach was fantastic and appreciated the calmness of being situated on the bay. The cottage is well equipped and appliances in excellent shape. We very much enjoyed the screen porch; very relaxing at happy hour and sunsets. I hope the lots across the street remain without houses as the view is great. I gave this a five star rating but would give it a 4.5 if I had a choice. The furniture in the living room is way past it’s prime as padding in armrests is shot and the love seats are just plain dirty. Also the large frying pan is shot and needs replacement. The memory foam pad on the bed works ok but a new mattress should be considered. That said, I would rent again. For a very small investment by owners this rental would become first class!
Thank you for your invaluable feedback...we are thrilled that you enjoyed the cottage and its amazing location, but are sorry that your expectations weren’t met. Bob and I will definitely address the issues that you raised...especially anything being dirty—yikes, that is a first!
The mattress and topper are new replacement replicas, and have been favorites with our renters (and our family) through the years. However, we will inspect all and, again, we appreciate your candor.
Quiet and relaxing!
I loved this property! The only downside is that the outside needs a little attention. The trees in the front need trimming (there are some dead branches that need to be removed - one fell while we were there) and the back needs some TLC. It just doesn't do the house justice.
Lori, Bob and I are so glad that you enjoyed our cottage and greatly appreciate your feedback!
We are sorry that our front yard trees are overdue for our tree doctor’s care and attention...Hurricane Michael’s devastation has placed us on a waiting list. Our (beloved) old oaks require very specialized services and equipment, hence the wait.
The woods, behind our backyard lawn, are not on our property, but I’m certain that the neighbors are, sadly, also waiting.
Again, thank you for taking the time to provide your invaluable review—take care, and we hope to welcome you back soon!
The cottage is located in a very quite and relaxing neighborhood.
Diana, thank you for your feedback and for taking the time to share your experience!
