About this property
Waterfront Maine Island Cottage, Brand New Post and Beam!
This gorgeous, brand new, waterfront Post & Beam cottage is located on a tidal cove. This location is unique in that you have lots of privacy, it is across the cove from a nature preserve & down a quiet wooded lane. It is also unique in that it is only an 5 minute drive to town. Very few locations on Vinalhaven have this unique combination of advantages.
You will enjoy beautiful sunrises, & sunsets reflect in the cove! Tidal coves are mud flats at low tide, which is great for bird watching! The hummingbirds will fly right next to you when you are sitting on the deck. Hummingbird and bird feeders are provided. as well as binoculars for a closer look. At high tide the water is over your head & the mud warms up the water so it is possible to go swimming when the tide is right. If you have a kayak or canoe we have a natural stone area for launching your boat into the cove.
The grounds have spectacular with extensive gardens! The cottage is build on the site of a former saw mill, & the flywheel from the old saw mill sits as a giant sculpture in the Daylily beds.
Inside the house is an open living room/ dining/kitchen area, with large windows facing the water & the daylily gardens. A herb garden is available for you. The bedrooms and kitchen...You supply bed linens and towels except when you might be flying into Maine from another state.
At high tide you almost feel as if you are in a boat the camp is so close to the water (only 10 feet from the high tide mark!). Although the cottage is new it is built on the site of an earlier camp that was very close to the water, which 'grandfathered' the location, building a house this close to the water is no longer possible.
The kitchen has granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances, cherry cabinets & a tile floor. The rest of the living area & the bedrooms have red birch floors. The bath has a granite vanity, a full tub/shower, & there are lobster and crab tiles embedded in the shower walls.
Visit Island Spirits offers fine affordable wines and wine tastings, homemade breads, cheeses, & pates. The New Era Gallery has the finest in local paintings, sculpture, photography, prints, pottery, weaving, with openings every 3 weeks, seasonally. Go Fish! has penny candy & toys for the kids, Second Hand Prose has used books, & there's a video store & a beauty parlor, too! Eat at Donna's Surfside for breakfast, Dot and Millie's for dinner. There is a large grocery & liquor store, a post office, a library, & don't forget the Fisherman's Friend & Everything Country! There are yoga studios. Saturday mornings there's a flea market which is a local summer highlight and a great place to socialize. Enjoy fresh squeezed lemonade, homemade pies, jams, fresh berries, produce & flowers. Knitted hats, jewelry, wood crafts, rugs, pottery, arts and crafts, watercolors, photography, netted handbags, t-shirts, an assortment of this and that, & just plain good old used stuff! Kayaking tours are also available on the island, as well as swimming and sailing classes for the kids. The Vinalhaven Land Trust has numerous walks on a weekly basis. Also, there are 3 kayaks available. A tandem and 2 singles. There is a golf course on nearby North Haven Island if you want to bring you clubs. Life it good!!!

About the host
Hosted by Joel Greenberg
The house was built 12 year ago. Everything is custom in it as you can see by the photos. It is a unique location being so close to town and yet so private.
Why they chose this property
The first time a rented a house on Vinalhaven I fell in love with it. The beauty of the natural areas and the warmth of the people were so enticing. I have come back year after year to my good fortune.
What makes this property unique
The cottage just 10 feet away from the water. At times you feel like you are a boat house. Once in a while you can see a seal in the cove or bald eagles flying above. I don't rent the house in the winter so it has remained in pristine condition. I have 6 gardens for your enjoyment, with a hugh collection of different colored daylilies and hydrangeas.
