Soak up the fascinating history of Presteigne with a stay in one of the town’s most iconic buildings. The apartment, which is set within the magnificent Judge’s Lodging Museum, is perfect for a couple seeking a stylish base for a holiday combining culture and countryside. Guests will receive a free pass to the hands-on museum, where you can experience what the Lodgings and Courtroom were like in their Victorian heyday. Head along the High Street to find one of a kind shops with art, antiques, and local produce and take a break from shopping in a local cafe, heritage pub or restaurant. Sitting midway between Ludlow and Hay on Wye right on the border between England and Wales, Presteigne is surrounded by breathtaking countryside adorned with castles and stately homes. Offa’s Dyke Path runs close by and further afield you'll the Shropshire Hills (10 miles) and Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park (20 miles).
The former housekeeper’s living quarters have been lovingly transformed into two warm and inviting holiday retreats as part of a project funded by the UK and Welsh governments, National Lottery, and Architectural Heritage Fund. You will enter via the walled garden at the rear of the building, where a private doorway off the main hall leads upstairs to the apartment’s front door. Once inside, a characterful holiday home awaits, decorated in rich colours and taking inspiration from the museum’s period rooms. Keep an eye out for original furnishings and artwork, which bring personality and charm to the space. A History Album and well-stocked bookshelf are waiting for you to browse. The entrance lobby has space to store outdoor gear and from here, doors open onto the inviting lounge/diner, where the hand-crafted kitchen has everything you need to whip up hearty breakfasts and delicious dinners using ingredients gathered on your travels. A dining table with velvet upholstered chairs is adjacent, giving onto a cosy lounge area. Unwind here, curled up in one of the sumptuously restored club chairs, to catch up on your favourite programmes on the Smart TV, choose a game or puzzle, or unfold a map to plan tomorrow's adventure. The generously proportioned bedroom has a king-size bed, reading area with an armchair and an en-suite shower room.
Guests are welcome to use the walled garden at any time and the onsite tearoom and will also receive a free pass to the museum during opening hours. Out of season, a private visit can be pre-booked by arrangement. The property has free on-street parking, subject to availability and a public car park with EV chargers is a short walk away.
