Escape to the edge of Exmoor, where the scenic, high-ground hub of Lynton is linked to its twin village Lynmouth by the steepest funicular railway in the world. Victorian Lynton is home to an enticing array of individual stores, cosy cafes, fascinating museums and an independent cinema, while Lynmouth is loved for its historic harbour and stunning views of the Atlantic coastline. For more spectacular sights, walk the South West Coast Path, head to the nearby Valley of the Rocks – where the cliffs are some of the highest in Britain – or follow the Lyn River upstream to the National Trust’s Watersmeet House. Less than 20 miles to the east, Ilfracombe is the gastronomic centre of North Devon; beyond, Woolacombe Beach (21 miles) has a beautiful and vast stretch of golden sands.
Set back above one of Lynton’s typically steep residential lanes, this 1875 sympathetically restored Victorian cottage is a real hidden gem. 'Together time' is the priority here – step inside the open-plan social space, which is perfectly formed, with a striking slate wall and a contemporary kitchen to cook, dine and unwind in comfort. Underfloor heating ensures all-season warmth; for added ambience, fire up the wood burner as you snuggle in front of the Smart TV. A modern shower room is conveniently located on the ground floor. When it’s time to sleep, head upstairs to find two bedrooms – a king-size bed with views across the Lynton rooftops, and a sanctuary-like single room with high-level windows, best suited for children or small adults.
There is a parasol on the wall for guests to use on the enclosed decking for sheltered alfresco dining, dressed with twinkle lights to create a wonderful ambience during the evening. There is a public car park 200 metres away, and on-street parking is subject to availability.
