About this property
Large comfy house big enough for 2 families next to ocean on Kaloli point
Winter Months: January and February are the best times to see whales in the bay by the house. 2023 has been great, there have been many sightings of spouts (many are moms with their calf), tails and breaching. No specific time of day is best, so when you have the opportunity to relax, grab a chair and go to the cliffs to watch. The weather is cooler especially at night, this is time when you will see snow atop Mauna Kea and Loa. Spring Months: March to June the orchids are in full bloom all over the yard. Weather is warming a bit, but it still can be cool at night.. Lots of different fruit are available during the spring. Summer Months: June to September the pineapples become ripe to eat. The summer of 2024 will have a large number of pineapples becoming ripe, we presently have 20 baby pineapples which will be ready to pick this summer. Summer is our hottest time at night due to the longer and dryer days (lots of floor and ceilings, NO AC). Fall months: The macadamia nuts are harvested in the Fall. The humpback whales typically return to the island in November. As typical for fall, with the shorter days the evenings start to become cooler.
If internet abilities is important to you we have Spectrum with 71.7 Mbps for downloading and 11.1 Mbps for uploading. Recently had a family of 5 staying and all used the internet for work and school and they said it worked perfectly. At one point 3 people were zooming at the same time.
The Area Melemele house is located in the quiet residential community at Kaloli Point. Kaloli Point is considered the jewel of Hawaiian Paradise Park (HPP) which is in the quite community of Kea'au (which is 28 miles south of Hilo), with its quiet community of mainly long-term residents, its wonderful flow of trade winds, closeness to the ocean and its relatively flat terrain. Kaloli Point is also in a rain shadow, it could be raining more inland but not on Kaloli point. You will enjoy easy and safe sunset walks along the coastal waters, peaceful evening meals on your screened lanai and the sounds of the ocean nearby.
The location of melemele house puts you close to the town of Hilo, with regular farmer’s markets, fine dining and retail shops, as well as the small towns of Kea’au and Pahoa, with their unique local communities and histories (as well as a shopping center with a market). The home is ideally situated with short drives leading to lazy beach days with the kids near Hilo, to incredible snorkeling at Carlsmith and Richardson Beach parks. Since the recent lava flow in the summer of 2018 there are several new black sand beaches that easy to get to where once Pohiki Boat ramp once was open ocean (see photo).
Hawaii Volcano National Park, which is only 20 miles away. See the new crater, it is significantly bigger than the previous crater. New trails are open that offer a great opportunity to see the tropical sea birds that nest in the crater (see photo). This is a fantastic opportunity to see how much the crater has changed since the many thousands of earth quakes hit the region in the summer of 2018.
The House Melemele house is close enough to the coastal waters (with a 2-3 min walk to a waterfront park) that the surf can be heard while you relax or eat your meals on the large screened lanai. This “classic” Hawai’ian style 2 story home, with vaulted ceilings, an open floor plan and windows strategically placed to allow the trade winds to flow through the house will give you the full aloha experience. The kitchen, dining area and living room are located in the vaulted roof area with each room having its own ceiling fan to keep them cool.
The living area has a 50” smart HDTV with a DVD player and cable TV for your entertainment needs and movie nights. And the Wi-Fi throughout the house will keep you connected. The dining nook has a 4-person table (in addition to the table on the master lanai). The kitchen is fully equipped with all the amenities needed to enjoy those Hawai’ian meals. The house has 3 bedrooms (each with a unique ceiling fan) and 2.5 bathrooms. In addition to the living areas, the top floor also has the master bedroom and a guest, half bath. The master bedroom offers the luxury of a California king bed and an en suite bathroom, large walk in closet and private lanai that lets you cozy up with a coffee/tea and a good book. Downstairs you will find the other two bedrooms, each with queen size beds, and closet space. These bedrooms share a full size bath. Downstairs you will also find a fully equipped laundry room (washer and dryer), a utility sink and a linen closet with ample beach towels and blankets for all your beach going needs and additional equipment such as snorkels, goggles, fins and a body board stored in the laundry room. There are also 3 bicycles available to ride around the area. Recently, solar panels were installed to make the house more sustainable and allow guest to leave fans on when you leave for the day.
We recently installed solar panels, so the house runs on solar power, but don't worry if its a very cloudy day we have back up to the electric company so you will always have power.
The Property Melemele house is located on a half-acre lot with a lot of privacy and a large paved driveway to meet all your parking needs. As is common in this residential area you will find plenty of flora in the front and back garden. The home has fruit trees including: coconut, orange, lemon, star fruit, macadamia nut, tangerine, and avocado, as well as pineapple plants. We recently planted a couple of Brazilian cherry bushes, these aren't your typical cherry, but they are extremely tasty. There is also a large assortment of flowers, including the pride of Hawai’i the Ohia trees with Lehua flowers. Don’t be surprised if you identify even more as you explore the neighborhood. In addition to admiring the flora, prepare to do some whale watching during the day (seasonal Nov-March) and star-gazing at night. Whales have been observed off Kaloli Point, with humpbacks in the bay during whale season, and the distance from city centers make Kaloli Point ideal for star-gazing on a clear night.

The house was in a great location as we traveled all around the island. The hosts provided all necessary information, recommendations for sites and restaurants, and made sure we knew how to contact them if we needed them. The house had all we needed during our stay.

The house was in a really nice quiet neighborhood, we could walk to a pretty clif though some small trail through the woods. Not too far from places to eat/groceries etc. Roosters were waking us up early but that was fine cause we were jet-lagged any ways. Frogs gave us nice chorus which was lulling for sleping. We arrived during a really nasty storm, and the electricity got knocked off but the house had solar backup which operated most of the appliances/fans etc untill power came back. Out hosts were very prompt with our questions during this storm.I would certainly reccomend it and would stay again.

Aloha, Mahalo for the wonderful review. Glad you enjoyed everything, come back anytime.
The property was well-maintained, clean, and pleasant. There were plenty of adventure-oriented towels, hats, boogie boards, and every other beach or touring device you might think of. There was also lots of literature about the island and its destinations. All of the sleeping accommodations were comfortable.

Mahalo for the wonderful review. So glad you had a wonderful time at Melemele house. You and your friends are welcome back anytime.
So peaceful. While we wanted to be near some attractions near Hilo, we did not want to stay near a lot of people. We knew of this little community in Keaau and this property did not disappoint! While we were initially nervous about the lack of AC (for medical reasons I typically need it), we ended up having excellent sleep at this home and there were many ceiling fans that helped. The screened in porch was a huge favorite along with the charming garden and exotic fruit trees in the backyard. It could not have been a more peaceful and welcoming home! Would stay again!!

This is our 2nd year staying here and we loved it just as much the 2nd time around. We have family in the area so it was a great home base to have them come visit (their house is tiny). Would stay again in a heartbeat.

We absolutely loved this place! The house had so much to offer and plenty of space for all of us! We loved everything! The beds were very comfortable, loved the views from the balconies, the cookware was perfect for us to make meals while we were there, the instructions were very easy to follow and understand, the host was amazing and kept us informed about the volcano that was going to erupt while we were there… We really loved everything about this place. We highly recommend this property and look forward to coming back again soon!

About the host
Hosted by Patricia Szot and Craig Sanders
My husband and I currently live in the Seattle area. We recently purchased this home as a vacation getaway. We have visited the Big Island many times and fell in love with the area and the island.
What makes this property unique
I fell in love with the house because of the huge screened-in lanai and the large back yard with all sorts of flowers and fruit trees. I can sit all day long on the lanai enjoying the ocean breeze and the sound of waves crashing into the shore, or the the rain falling onto the roof. At night there is the added pleasure of hearing the coque frogs. The location of Kaloli Point allows safe walking around the area and easy access to coastal water for bird- or whale-watching. The coastline is entirely public so that one can walk along the rocks as far as they can without encroaching on private property.
