This is an older home, but it is well kept and lake/beach access was amazing. We had 7-8 people and were comfortable. The listing was accurate and the communication was great.

Peter and his group were exceptional guests and agreed to help install our updated internet. Four room additions have made this into a VRBO purpose-built rental location. We have been constantly updating as often as we can between guest visits.
Beautiful lake view as you walk down the hallway toward the kitchen/dining area. We enjoyed campfires on the beach, coffee on the deck overlooking the lake and being together:). Our 10 year old grand daughter said when you pull in the driveway the house looks like a koala bear face! Hence camp koala

Thank you for your kind description. Our 2003 addition was made to enlarge spaces and make all spaces more user friendly for children. Over the last 33 years many of those children have returned as adults. Our hours of cleaning over the years is our contribution to making the world better. Our hope is that these visiting children provide positive opportunities for their future children.
Mary’s place is well worn but comfortable. Our family of 12 (plus dog) all had space to relax and play. We especially loved being so close to the beach. There were lots of beach toys and chairs. Location is great, in close proximity to lots of Door county attractions. Some things we would have loved to have had in an ideal world include: kayak, boogie boards, dinner/ picnic table for the deck, more beach towels and laundry detergent. But overall the positives of Mary’s cottage easily outweigh the negatives, including being pet friendly, having AC, ample parking, and 4 bathrooms.

Thanks for your recommendation. Thousands of kids and parents have had unique fun on the beach over the last three decades. It takes us almost all of the winter to recover. It is a lot easier not to share but then, where would you go?
Great place with beautiful views of the lake! The place was huge with plenty of space to sleep! We had a fire on the beach and watched the sunset go down! Only issue was May Fly season so didn’t really get to enjoy the deck at all- however that was this time of year! Overall the place was clean, plenty amenities and even met the owners and seemed very nice!

Liked: Check-in, location, listing accuracy
Disliked: Communication
The location was stunning- you can’t beat a property right on the water. The house felt very “lived in,” lots of clutter and knickknacks. There were some cleanliness issues - cobwebs, dated/overused bathrooms, dust, beat up exterior with stuff laying around. The area is very buggy- this is no fault of the owners, but just something to keep in mind.

Unfortunately Riley came during “lake bug week” when our lake bugs hatch. We never know when that will be so we can’t warn our guests. All the four toilets were replaced one year ago with the higher wider design. We try and make the house look more like a beach house and less like a sterile hotel. Children leave painted rocks and other “surprises” for later children. Outside beach toys, shovels, beach umbrellas, chairs and tables are not used by everyone but must be there for families. The house has been “lived in” by thousands of happy guests over then last 34 years.
We can only paint the outside between when it is warm enough in the Spring and between early guests. That time (this year) was after their stay. Other issues have been addressed. Only 5% of Door County’s coastline is sand beach. Our sand beach is the best, and this house was designed for that view. We wash all the windows as often as we can. We also rent out The Cedar Beach House in Baileys Harbor (same size, also on the lake) which provides a more formal inside atmosphere. Thank you for your review. You may have helped us improve the property for other guests.
We loved our stay at Marys Beach House. This is the 2nd year we've stayed here for our annual family vacation. The house is very spacious and clean. Views are stunning and we all loved the beach.

Appreciative guests make all of our efforts worthwhile.
Mary's Beach house was the perfect place for a family vacation. Had enough sleeping spaces, enough rooms that if you needed a little quite time, huge deck and wonderful wonderful beach! Laid back, and comfortable for all!
Large home with all of the necessities! The views of Lake Michigan are gorgeous and the home had everything we needed to make our stay fantastic.

Great Location
Great location on the beach and not far from Sturgeon bay! Great views of the lake and beach. Would definitely stay again! One suggestion would be new couches in the living room.

Thank you for the advice. We have been thinking of replacing them.
Location is amazing. Wonderful hostesses they have a lot of pride for their beach house in the woods. I’m sure they have enjoyed many memories there.

Our greatest fear is that the next two generations of our family will change their commitment to keep renting out our two properties. It would be sad to end this sharing arrangement.
capacious beautiful cottage, gorgeous surroundings and Lkae Michigan!

About the host
Hosted by Mary and Ray Spangler
Ray and I are retired teachers and have owned the property since the summer of 92. There are two previous owners. The first built a 3 bedroom 1 bath in the early 60s; the second added a den and bedroom and bath as well as a deck and screened in sun room in the 80s We started renting in 93 and did an addition to the property in 2003 adding a glassed in sunroom and a 1/2 bath downstairs and an upper story with full bath, large bedroom with 2 beds and mini kitchen: fridge, sink and microwave.
Why they chose this property
I walked down the main hallway and saw the beach and fell in love.
What makes this property unique
The house has 120 ft of sand beach, is quiet and only 6 miles from Sturgeon Bay with its shopping and fine restaurants. Pottowatomee and White Fish Dunes State Parks are nearby and very worth a visit as well as are the other towns and parks on the peninsula about 20 minutes North.
