Historic Top Floor Condo at the Grand Traverse Commons
STEP INTO HISTORY! The Village at Grand Traverse Commons is an experience like no other. Formerly the Traverse City State Hospital--this marvel of preservation is now a bustling community of mixed commercial and residential uses.
I purchased this condo in 2017. It is located on the top (3rd) floor of Cottage 20. It is accessible by elevator and is also equipped with its own private washer and dryer.
The space is ideally suited for 2 people--but could accommodate 2 additional guests on the queen sized, memory foam sleeper sofa. This is a wonderful vantage point from which to explore the area. It is cozy, comfortable and equipped with everything you need to make your stay feel relaxed and carefree. There is an electric fireplace for added ambiance and warmth. Guests may also enjoy the gorgeous front covered porch.

Wonderful stay! Everything was perfect. The location is great and we were able to walk to a fabulous Italian restaurant. So very happy we were able to stay here!,,
My family of four enjoyed our stay in this cute apartment! The god out couch was comfortable for my two daughters (12 & 10), and the master bedroom had plenty of space, both in the room and closet. The bed mattress was a little firm for my taste, and the floors were very squeaky, but otherwise everything was great!
Overall our stay here was good. The only negative was that we could not figure out how to operate the remote/television and our host was not helpful—she wanted me to call the cable company to figure out the issue and that is not acceptable. A small thing: I’ve stayed previously at a couple of other properties at The Commons and this is the only property that didn’t have a binder of FAQ’s or information about the property (such as television troubleshooting). I’d suggest that to the owner.
The condo itself is beautiful. Decor is beautiful and cozy but not over cluttered. Care has been taken to ensure it's complete with everything you might need. We could have used a strainer in the kitchen. But definitely not a big deal. Otherwise, there was anything and everything we needed. The bed, unfortunately, was rock hard. My husband could have maybe lived with it, but for me it was actually painful. We had to remove the mattress from the sofa bed and place it on top of the bed to make it comfortable. This makes the sofa unusable so you have to move it back and forth if you actually plan to use the sofa, which we did only a couple times during our stay. With a different mattress, it would have definitely been 5 star, because everything else was great. Note: if the idea of mice freaks you out, you might want to think twice. It's an old building (part of what makes it so great) but the downside was hearing the scurry and scratching of mice in the ceiling a couple nights. Could have just been a random thing while we were there.
This is a unique residence that embodies the history of the Traverse City State Hospital albeit with the modern amenities you would expect. The pictures in the listing are an accurate portrayal of the historical look of the interior and the decor is very well done. Furniture was comfortable, but the bed was a bit small. The unit has a Roku tv and the internet worked well. It is located near the center of the Grand Traverse Commons and the Mercado / restaurants are just a short walk away. The communication with the property manager was excellent. You should be aware that downtown Traverse City and the beaches are best reached by car from this location. Staying here was a novel experience compared to the many generic condos all over the city.
The property is great and the location is especially cool being in the re-developed former state hospital. Lots to do and see, and good dining options without getting in the car. Absolutely would stay here again.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this unique location. Be sure to take a tour of the property and you'll appreciate the rooms even more. We were able to use the living room as a second bedroom and still had enough room, There's plenty to do in and around the Villages and we stayed busy and engaged for several days!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful condo. It was spotless and had everything we needed for a 4 night stay. Our host was very responsive and made the check in process easy with her detailed instructions. The location was perfect with easy access to everything on our list. My husband and i highly recommend staying here and definitely plan on returning on our next trip to Michigan.
Was looking for a great spot for a long weekend away. This was perfect. The location was amazing. The space was ideal - cozy and comfortable with more than enough space for one or two people.
Amazing condo on historic property! Beautiful unit a short walk away from two amazing Italian restaurants and a winery! Sally is an outstanding host and very responsive. Can’t wait to go back!
Beautiful condo with an amazing location. You are literally steps away from amazing shops and restaurants. We had 2 adults and 2 kids stay comfortabley in the condo.
We came in for the weekend for our 40th anniversary. Very convenient and we just love the campus of the old building. the room was very quiet and comfortable. Highly recommend
My husband and I went to Traverse City for the weekend, and were so lucky to find this perfect little condo right in Grand Traverse Commons. The location was so convenient, we didn’t even have to drive anywhere the whole weekend! The condo was clean, comfy, and very cute, and the building was very quiet, which was wonderful. The weekend was phenomenal, and we would absolutely stay here again!
