The cottage is in a rural setting off the main road(Old Route 60, now called Midland Trail Road) and easy access parking for several vehicles, cars, trucks, and or trailers. It sits on 4 acres bordered by Ogles Creek, US Interstate 64, and Midland Trail Road. Basic shopping and gas are available within 2 miles of the house plus a bakery within close driving range. The house was built on a site that was once a 50’s streetcar diner (eventually donated to a transportation museum in Maine by the former owners). The Little House was built new in 2003 on the original footprint. It is a one-bedroom, open concept cottage. It has a “vintage” style bathroom with claw-foot tub and shower, a laundry closet with washer and dryer. The cottage has “city” water. Each of its spacious rooms has ceiling fans, including the bathroom. For the summer there are also 2 air conditioning window units for comfort. There is also manually operated baseboard heat for chilly mornings or nights. The kitchen boasts of a new stove and refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven, and coffee maker plus an island with two stools and a table with 4 chairs for sit down meals. There is one bedroom with a king-size bed and one twin and in the living area, there is a queen hide-a-bed couch. Linens are available for all beds and the bathroom. There is also a walk-in closet for clothes.

The house has an internet and basic cable TV. The television is a smart TV with Hulu and Netflix built-in so renters can easily access their own accounts for additional entertainment. The cottage is “pet friendly” (the porch is gated on both ends) though it is recommended that all pets have their own beds/crates, litter boxes, etc. and must be contained if left alone. Dogs over 75 lbs are discouraged and birds are prohibited.

cozy cottage and great yard
We had a great time. We came up for a weekend of fly fishing and hiking with our dog. The huge fenced-in yard made that a pleasure rather than a challenge. As other reviewers have noted, it's great to sit on the front porch and watch the dog run around/explore. And the bread from the local bakery that was there when we arrived was a very nice treat. Sandra and Natalie were great hosts. We were fly fishing 10 minutes away; so, this was a perfect location for us. It's also close to Lewisburg if you want to head over for more restaurants. We mostly enjoyed relaxing here. Other reviews have noted the noise from cars--the cottage sits 20-30 back from the road it's on, and 64 is fairly close. Yes, you can hear cars, but it didn't bother us at all. We will definitely come back and stay again if we're in the area again!

It was okay
The house was a nice little get away from daily life. However it was dirty, we had to clean and clean just to enjoy without worrying about stepping on something or our dog eating cigarette butts off the floor. There were previous piles of dog defecation in the yard. Bag of open chips under the bed. Small things that made it a nuisance. The highway sounds were nice to hear as background and at night the stars were amazing. Its within range to stores and things to see. Just needed cleaned.

Lovely little house!
We had a wonderful stay in this sweet little house! Natalie is a perfect host and very helpful! We had everything we needed for our stay and we were pleasantly surprised at how well stocked the kitchen was! The fenced in yard was fabulous and our dogs loved being able to play and run while we enjoyed sitting on the porch. The fresh bread and flowers were a lovely surprise as well. I highly recommend this great little house and we hope to visit again soon!

Nice Little College
Cottage was very clean and tidy with everything I needed for my stay! Though there is road noise, don’t let it deter you from selecting this little house. I did not even notice the road noise at night. I will definitely stay here again!

I am a native Virginian, did my undergraduate work at JMU in Art Ed. in Harrisonburg, and received my Masters in Art Therapy at LMU, and have been living in LA for the last 30 years. This little cottage I built on a property that I purchased from My Mother's estate and was going to be my retreat when visiting back home. After my mother passed, I took over her original home and manage it now as a vacation rental and have added this cottage as a new listing. It is a sweet little get-a-way place in which to retreat, read or write or just catch up with time away from life's chaos. My family and friends love to use the cottage when they get a chance. Please feel free to ask any questions regarding the location and the many surrounding points of interest that draw many to the area every year.

Why they chose this property

It's convenient to many points of interest in Alleghany and Greenbrier Counties. It is small and intimate and a perfect place for a single person alone or with their bestie or a couple alone or with 2 small kids. Pets are allowed.

What makes this property unique

It's an open concept cottage. Simple and easy access and plenty of parking. Sits on 4 acres of flat land for games. Has approximately one acre of fenced yard for the safety of your pets and children with a two-gate entrance and a trail to the creek is at the far end of the property. Horses and goats in adjoining fields. Has a nice porch where you face the creek and can sit to watch the sun go down. It's a much better solution for a couple of nights over a single hotel room in the nearest town for a similar price.
