About this property
Cozy Mountain home near Covington, Virginia, The Greenbriar and Homestead
Windcliff Acres at Escatawba is located at 3621 Midland Trail Road in Callaghan. The city of Covington is only 6 miles away with shopping: a super Walmart and a Food Lion grocery store. Many recreational opportunities are within a short distance; The Greenbrier and the Homestead are World-class golf resorts under 20 miles away. The historic Humpback Bridge is within minutes of the house and there are many other historic sites nearby. Roanoke, Va. and Lewisburg W. VA have airports that service the area, along with Amtrak which comes into Clifton Forge and White Sulphur Springs.
The house was built in 1970 by Marie and John Bradley Jr. of Callaghan, Va. as their retirement home. The house is handicap accessible and dog friendly. The well water at the house has been said to be the freshest tasting water in the county.
The house has 3 bedrooms with ample sleeping arrangements for up to 8 adults in the bedrooms: 2 full-size beds, 1 queen-size bed, and 2 twin beds, all with updated mattresses and linens. There are 2 full baths by the bedrooms and one-half bath off the kitchen/laundry area.
The newly updated kitchen has stainless steel appliances and a deep-well sink with attached drainboard, disposal, and butcher block countertops. There are three fireplaces in the house, though it is heated with thermostat controlled baseboard and wall heaters to meet individual preferences. We do have newly added central air and heat for the warmer and colder months. There are ceiling fans in all the bedrooms, den, and kitchen. There is always a good breeze throughout the house when the windows are opened and there is an attic fan for circulating the air, day or night. The house also has a den and living room. There is comfortable seating throughout the house. The back and front porches have ceiling fans for use in the summer months. The house has a new bronze metal roof and is well insulated. Parking for approximately 6-8 cars is available on the property. There is covered parking for 2 cars.
The house has a land-line with a local phone number but can accept, but not place long-distance calls. There is internet access with wifi in the house (information about the setup is posted on the information board in the dining room and there is also a wireless printer for renters connivance. There are also 2 flat-screen televisions (one smart) on cable service. Locally, the house is situated within a half a mile of 2 grocery store/gas stations and a bakery is about 3 miles away. The view from the back porch overlooks the quaint community village of Callaghan. Easy on and off access to the interstate 64 and lovely mountain roads that direct you to river and lake fishing. A great place to visit and enjoy with a variety of enriching amenities that the mountains and this historic area provide. Festivals and entertainment abound, but also a great place to just get away from the chaos of everyday city life. I do permit pets if they are crate trained and can be constrained to those crates when not attended by their owners. Dogs over 40 lbs are not allowed without permission from the owner. Cats are not allowed unless special circumstances are approved. Birds are prohibited. The quotes given for the rental of the property are based on one couple additional guests will be charged $20/ night/ person unless infants with their own beds. Added fees will be applied for Additional guests over the two original guests.

About the host
Hosted by Sandra Bradley

I am a native Virginian living in Los Angeles for the past 27 years. My rental home was my parents' retirement home. I purchased it from my Mother's estate and have been working on improving it for the past 15 years as our extended family has used it for get away weekends over the years. It is a joy to share the property with family/friends and those who want to rent for short term rental. I am an artist/art therapist. I attended JMU in Harrisonburg, VA for undergraduate work (BA in Art Ed.) and got my masters in Art Therapy at LMU, in Westchester CA. My main focus has been graphic design and illustration work. Also work with young people and eating disorders. I am still working, though I am beyond retirement age, I love the work. I have grown children who also work and live within the LA area. I have many relatives in Virginia and I try to spend at least 4-6 weeks a year there on "work-cations"... as there is always a project that needs attending the beauty of home ownership.
Why they chose this property
This was my parents' retirement home which they built in 1970. My father accrued the land from the The Cumberland Rumbold Estate. That was a land grant from the King of England back in the day. The land sits on top of a cliff that was named Escatawba which has been said to mean "Clear view" the fly-fishing farm in Hematite says it means "Clear water." whatever the word means, it was a native indian word and apparently is used to describe many "clear" things. LOL! With 38 acres of natural wood, it allows for limited hiking on a previously cut dirt road that goes from one end of the property to the other with a small local graveyard half way. Interesting tomb stones tell the story of the area ...a local fire, slaves, the death of a young hand maiden from England that links to the lovely restored Milton Hall which stands almost within site of the cliff.
What makes this property unique
It is on acreage and there is much privacy. There are deer, bear, rabbits, fox, ground hogs, hawks, buzzards and many bird varieties that live on the property. There is a 65 foot long porch that stretches the length of the back of the house which affords a beautiful view of the valley all the way to W.VA. There is a sturdy wooden swing and ample porch furniture for travelers relaxation including a grill. There are local stores within walking distance and a bakery that is a short drive away where you can get an array of baked goods daily. The W.VA state fair is within a short drive in the annual PGA at the Greenbrier is a big draw in July for avid gofers. The property has well water that is said to be the best in the county due to the many underground streams.
