About this property

Cozy cabin with hi-speed fiber optic. Dog friendly! 40 min to dtwn Asheville.

Mother Nature creates beautiful Winter Wonderlands here in Madison County, NC. Several snow tubing businesses and the brand new Hatley Pointe Ski Resort are just a mile up the hill from the Cuckoo's Nest. Come play in the snow and explore the surrounding area.

Summertime is for rafting, tubing, zip-lining, fishing, and mountain biking. Don't forget s'mores by the firepit! Come and enjoy all that that Madison County, the "Jewel of the Blue Ridge," has to offer. If you have any questions after you read the property description, please don't hesitate to ask.

LOCATION: The Cuckoo's Nest is a 700 square foot cabin located at 3500 feet of elevation, just 4 miles off I-26 W (Exit 3 - the Wolf Laurel Exit). It is a beautiful 40-minute drive from Asheville up I26 W through Buckner Gap. Our house is located just a mile down the hill from the entrance to Hatley Pointe Ski Resort; it is 4 miles from an entrance of the Appalachian Trail at the NC/TN border.

RATE: As listed and is not negotiable.

*********ATTENTION WINTER RENTALS (NOV 15 - MAY 01)**********
We are in a terrific location for snow tubing and skiing (less than a mile from the house)! We are at 3500 feet. It snows often and we can sometimes get a foot at a time. To rent our house YOU MUST HAVE A LARGE VEHICLE (truck or SUV with some ground clearance) WITH 4WD. Our driveway is steep, gravel, with a switchback. Experience driving in winter weather is highly recommended.

Seclusion: peace, quiet, serenity, and privacy.

Wifi: Remote workers, rejoice! You have fiber optic 5G here. Bring your laptop and set up in the spacious office space.

Dog Friendly: Bring your fur babies with you! Plenty of sniffing for them to do here. Note: there is not a fenced yard, but we do have a tie-out by the firepit.

Wildlife: It is pretty common to see deer, rabbits, gophers, chipmunks, turkeys, owls, and hawks.

Great outdoor space: Gas grill; Charcoal grill + smoker, Two hammocks for relaxing; seating area by the large firepit; amazing stargazing (zero light pollution); birdwatching; dogs welcome!

Nearby activities: Trout fishing (right down the street along the hatchery supported creek); Appalachian Trail (Sam’s Gap access is 4 miles away); snow tubing (1/4 mile from the house); whitewater rafting; skiing (Hatley Pointe Ski Resort); snow tubing; panning for gemstones; Mt. Mitchell; Nolichucky River tubing; Rocky Fork State Park; a plethora of delicious restaurants and breweries in the surrounding areas. Try either Wolf Provisions (they have basic grocery necessities, too) or Little Creek Cafe for breakfast or lunch close to home.

Fresh, ice-cold, spring water straight out of the tap (from the spring on the property.)

Lots of books, board games & card games, & JBL Bluetooth speaker waiting for your playlist.

CONS (you should definitely NOT rent our house if the following is important to you):

Video games. There is no gaming system of any kind.

Uber / Lyft: It is difficult to get service to this area.

We do not have get local cable TV channels. We have a 36” Smart TV with built in streaming services/apps.

We do not have a dishwasher.

We do not have a bathtub (only a shower).

NO cats or ferrets allowed.

NO PARTIES allowed (due to small septic system).

A vehicle with ground clearance is recommended for our steep gravel driveway - think SUV / Crossover/ Truck. (Yes, that means you WILL bottom out your Corvette). Also, YOU MUST HAVE A 4WD VEHICLE TO STAY HERE IN THE WINTER.

Well.....if you are still reading, great! Our house is your house!

We are constantly improving the Cuckoo's Nest with your comfort in mind. Here are the latest improvements:

New in 2023: Adjustable work desk (standing/sitting) with LED " light; Fiber Optic high-speed WiFi; 10" cooling comfort gel memory mattress for the daybed.

New in 2023: Stainless steel 5-burner convection oven with air fryer features; stainless steel refrigerator with ice-maker; stainless steel overhead stove vent with light; also, re-graded driveway and added gravel

New in 2021: Dual Mini-split system in the living and bedroom for 100% climate control; new hot water heater; new shower head; interior paint; 8" queen sized Tempur-Pedic mattress.

New in 2020: Roof; microwave & toaster oven; washer & dryer.

The kitchen is fully stocked with all you may need to cook with; all linens (+ extra quilts for winter!) are provided.

Here are more details:
There is a dining table and chairs inside for cold winter nights, but in all likelihood, you will enjoy all your meals at the dining table on the large screened-in porch. The porch has festive lights and a hammock during the summer. It is a great spot to listen to the sound of the waters of Puncheon Fork Creek across the road, or for bird watching.

There is a queen-size captain's bed (dresser drawers underneath) in the bedroom with 4 pillows, a comfy mattress, and extra quilts for chilly evenings.

The bathroom has plenty of natural light (skylight), towels, and a hairdryer. Please note that while we do have a shower with a glass door, we DO NOT have a bathtub. If you are a big person (over 6') you are going to find the shower to be a bit small.

In the living room, we have a 36" flat-screen Smart TV (you can choose from a variety of local channels + movie channels or log into your Netflix or Prime accounts, etc.), high-speed Wi-Fi, and landline from which you can make local calls. We also have loads of area maps, flyers, magazines, etc about the area. If you like to play games, we have Trivial Pursuit, checkers, chess, Yahtzee, Uno, dominoes, and Texas Hold Em poker, and more -- have fun!!! If you like to read, there is sure to be a novel on the shelf that strikes your fancy. There are lots of movies (75+ DVDs) to watch, too.

In the living room, there is a day bed (twin mattress) with a pull-out trundle underneath (another twin mattress). The trundle pops up and is on a rolling frame so you can put it wherever you want or make up the two twins together to form a queen.
We have a laundry closet with a washer and dryer that you are welcome to use -- because kids + dogs = muddy : ).

We are dog-friendly, too! There is a tie-out next to the firepit if your pooch tends to wander. Your dog will enjoy sniffing around the backyard area. Please note: We have 3 acres and it is NOT fenced. Our neighbors have a variety of livestock and dogs….keep your dog with you at all times.

We have a large fire pit in the backyard (and a wood stove inside for the winter). You can bring your own firewood to roast marshmallows on your campfire, or you can have firewood delivered for $30/day. ***Please let us know when you make your reservation so we can order the firewood delivery in advance*** The stars and constellations that you can see on a clear night are just breathtaking.

Two final notes that are important....
Our cabin is located in a "dry" section of Madison County. That means if you want to purchase any beer, wine, or liquor for your vacation, you need to do so in Asheville, Weaverville, or Mars Hill. Once you pass Exit 11, there is no alcohol for sale.

Finally, if you are considering a winter getaway to ski or snow tube, the magical winter wonderland that you will find at the cabin will not disappoint you. HOWEVER, you MUST have a 4WD vehicle!!! Our driveway is steep and is a gravel drive. It is not uncommon to get more than a foot of snow and have it last for a week or more. Icy conditions make navigating the drive extremely challenging (but once you get down to the road, it is plowed regularly!). Also, please be aware that there are frequent power outages in the winter. Most only last a few hours and aren't a big deal - as long as you have firewood!

If you have any further questions about our property, please don't hesitate to ask. We're happy to make local recommendations.

Beautiful cozy stay!

We had an amazing time at the Cuckoo’s Nest! Easy instructions to pick up key, great recommendations for nearby outdoors activities, and the cabin itself feels like home! Also great location if you are bringing a dog. They had a dog bed and dog bowls ready for my pup! Thank you for a great, cozy stay.

Perfect little spot

We enjoyed our short stay at the Cuckoos Nest! It was perfect for a weekend trip to the mountains and it was conveniently located near Wolf Ridge Ski Resort and snow tubing! Also, there was a cute little store/gift shop/coffee place right around the corner called Wolf Provisions! We will definitely be back! The best part was that our doggies got to enjoy the visit with us!

Repeat visitor

This was the second time visiting this property with my husband. We came back to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. The cabin was great! It is very peaceful and secluded but also a close drive to Asheville and hiking locations in NC and TN. We brought our 2 year old hound mix with us and he was excited to come back as well! I definitely recommend this location to those looking for a peaceful retreat.

A quieter July 4th holiday.

The Coo-Coo Nest was exactly as described. The bed is very comfortable after a great day of hiking. We spent every morning and evening we were there in the screened in porch. I ended up naming the male and female hummingbirds, who visited the feeders every morning and evening, Romeo and Juliet. :-) Then spending time around the fire pit roasting marshmallows and making s’mores was fun while we listened to the stream nearby. Our dog, Mia had a much more relaxed holiday this year and we absolutely loved your place and the town. We definitely plan to come back!

We loved the Cuckoo’s Nest!

The place is adorable. The property was lovely even though it rained most of the time we were there. We enjoyed the covered patio and just relaxing to the rain drops. Our dog, Dobby, really enjoyed being included and he loved all the new smells. We went into Asheville one evening and he even got his own doggy dinner! The only complaints we had were the very large black ants in the house and the bed in the main bedroom was uncomfortable but we made do. Overall, I would highly recommend staying here especially if you have a fur baby with you. It’s obvious the owners have put a lot of love into the place

Cute, cozy location

Pros: - Very clean and quiet - Spacious back yard with great fire pit - Fully stocked kitchen with a new air fryer oven - Smart TV and pull out couch bed - Wood burning stove was cozy and warm - Dog friendly! The realty place where we checked in loved dogs and came out to love on them when we checked in and out! We have 3 big dogs and its hard to find accommodation for us and them and we all had a great time. There was a small dog bed and bowls at the place, (too small for us but a great touch). Cons - The wifi is just good enough to run the smart TV. You cannot have any other device on the wifi at the same time - The shower is small, which is okay, but the shower head is mouted very low, im 5'9 and it was mounted at my chest level. It is a removable head so you can take it off and spray yourself. It is functional and thats it, and that may be all you need. - Alot of gopher/mole tunnels in back yard 😅😅 watch your step.

Nice secluded cabin

The cabin was lovely. Had everything I needed. Clean. Bed was comfortable. It was cold so I enjoyed having the wood burning stove and the outdoor fire pit. Overall, it was great. The only negative (and it didn’t warrant taking away a star, just feedback for the property mgt company) was the trash situation. I’ve stayed at a number of vrbo’s in this area and this was the first one that required me to drive the trash to the local dump on the day of departure. There was some included direction on taking a card which I believe was the property ID that validated the use of the dump, and this card needed to be returned to the cabin after dumping the trash. Since I had to leave early I didn’t want to spend time messing with all of this, so I decided to just bag the little bit of trash I had made and just disposed of it when I got home. In my experience, most vrbo’s in the area just have you dispose of it in a bear-proof can outside and the house cleaners or mgt company take care of it. Again, not a deal breaker for me or anything that detracted from the overall experience, but just some feedback since I’ve stayed in a number of similar cabins nearby that do not have this check out requirement.

Outstanding

The Cuckoo's Nest was beyond perfect for our September North Carolina getaway. Very private and quiet which is exactly what we needed! It was so perfect and I slept so soundly the first night that we extended our stay another two nights almost immediately. All together we spent a week total and didn't run out of things to do in the area. Within 30-60 minute drive is hiking trails, waterfalls, Mt Mitchell, whitewater rafting, etc. Communication was excellent and Heather is a wonderful host. The love shines through in this place from it being spotlessly clean to the personal touches like the guest book and the beautiful artwork in the bedroom. As travelers we have typically stayed in hotels and this is our first Vrbo. Let me tell you that it has set the bar VERY high. I can't tell you how comforting it was to come back to this place in the evenings and have a fully stocked kitchen to work with (we didn't end up eating junk food or spend hundreds dining out), laundry facilities (we didn't come home with an entire suitcase full of dirty laundry) and a beautifully maintained yard for the dogs to play. My only regret is forgetting to sign the guest book before checking out, but we'll certainly be back and I'll just have to do it then! :)

Wish We Were Still There!

The Cuckoo's Nest has an energy indicative of being loved by many, plenty of comfy linens, and quality kitchen tools that set this rental apart from its competitors. The nature viewing opportunities from the screened-in porch are superb at all hours, and the spacious library sunroom can accommodate an additional sleeping bag, a couple yoga mats for your meditation practice, or raucous late-night dancing on the plush rug. Even if the ample local sites don't lure your party outside its walls, this rental will steal your heart like no other, and we definitely recommend it for small gatherings of loved ones. If we could change anything about this property, we would move it slightly futher away from the busy road and overtly political neighbors, though the tree coverage provides enough good vibes and shelter to make us want to rebook regardless. What a lovely mountain gem!!

Cute getaway

My boyfriend, lab, and I loved staying at the cuckoo’s nest. The screened porch is especially nice and the backyard is large. The place is extremely pet friendly, which was super nice. We used the kitchen a lot and it has everything you need if you plan to cook. It’s 30 minutes from Asheville, so it’s easy to go into town and get good food or do some shopping, but also super nice to stay up in the mountains and not be right in the middle of everything.

About the host

Hosted by Heather Coggins

Host profile image
We live in Charleston, SC. Jimmy is a musician and works for the State Department. Heather is a high school English teacher. We have two boys, ages 18 and 22. We all love to spend time in the Asheville area hiking and fishing; it just made sense to buy a vacation home in the mountains. Unfortunately, life gets in the way of us enjoying the Cuckoo's Nest as much as we would like, so we decided to share it with you when we can't use it ourselves.

Why they chose this property

We chose this property because of the secluded location, the elevation, and the beauty of the area. Before we even got to the property, the drive up I-26 West through Buckner Gap had us 50% sold before we even arrived! Coming up from Folly Beach -- where it is meltingly hot in the summer -- to the respite of the Cuckoo's Nest is like arriving on a different planet. If only we could figure out how to bottle that clean, cool, crisp smell of rain and hay.

What makes this property unique

We love sitting on the screened-in porch and watching the birds, listening to the river across the road, enjoying the cool mountain air. There are so many water activities to do in the summer (fishing is our #1, but tubing, rafting, canoeing are all a blast), it is hard to decide how to spend the long summer days. When we come home, we grill out and watch the lightning bugs and then the constellations.

The changing leaves in the fall are gorgeous, and the winter wonderland created by the snow is magical. Nothing compares to a good glass of wine by the wood-burning stove and warm flannel sheets in the winter. We've gotten snowed in and had to call our bosses in Charleston, "Um, sorry, can't make it in to work on Monday" : )

We love our little cabin and you will, too!!

Heather and Jimmy
