About this property

“ShoreTing”

Featured by USA Today travel, HGTV and Dwell Magazine, it is boho beach bliss at this modern and unique beachfront property located on a secret beach on the Atlantic coastline of Eleuthera. The quaint and authentically Bahamian Gregory Town is 2 miles to the North and world famous Surfers Beach is a 10 minute walk. All photos here taken at our property/beach. Built in the spirit of a modern surf safari outpost, this sophisticated yet understated property captures the true essence of adventure.

This outpost is both eco-resort and surf camp. For "ShoreTing"/ thatch house, we enlisted Brillhart Architects, a firm that has been honored with national and international design awards, and work has been featured in publications around the world. Best described by the architect himself, the house is "Inspired by the experimental Hatch House (Jack Hall, 1960) on Cape Cod’s Natural SeaShore, the project is a combination of volumes and outdoor decks that dissolve within the landscape. The plan, which is essentially a dog trot, includes a living room / kitchen volume that faces East, with a large picture window framing the view of the Atlantic Ocean. The bedroom / bath is located in a separate volume in the rear, with views of the untouched hillside just to the North. (The South facade is solid, sheltering views of the owner's neighboring sister property. The sister property can be rented in conjunction with this property. For availability see listing no. 995456 "Shorebreak". Connecting the two spaces is a long porch that runs along the south side of the building and a central, covered outdoor sitting area. This small court acts as the formal entry into both spaces and also allows one to enjoy the weather while still being protected from the wind and spray coming off the ocean. Operable flaps and shutters (maneuvered with nautical hardware and rigging elements) are used along the porch and in front of all the window openings. Designed for multiple uses, the shutters provide shade and control breezes while also adding security while the retreat is unoccupied. Raised a few feet off the ground, the building is constructed of western red cedar and thatch, with a tongue and groove cedar paneled interior. The lightness of the structure, the use of natural materials, and outdoor space that acts as a penetration within the design lets the building fade away." "ShoreTing"/ thatch house rises 25’ above the ocean on a dramatic cliff above a beautiful beach known to locals as "Secret Beach". The property and Secret Beach are located on the Atlantic coastline of Eleuthera, 25 minutes from N. Eleuthera Airport (ELH). We are a short 10 minute walk or 5 minute paddle to the larger and world famous Surfer's Beach. The quaint and authentically Bahamian Gregory Town is 2 miles to the North. Various restaurants, bars and grocery stores are located in town. All of the photos on this listing were taken at "ShoreTing" and the beach below. At this property you can plan a busy day of activities and experience the thrill of diving, snorkeling, fishing, surfing, and kayaking. Or better yet, you can choose to do nothing at all. Kick back, relax, read a book and doze off into the afternoon. "ShoreTing"/ thatch house was created to be harmonious and respectful to its natural surroundings. Our vision for the property was to embrace nature at its fullest and to escape the trappings of the modern world. No Television, no computer, no problem. (dont worry there is wifi). This is a place for nature lovers. Play at the beach by day and stargaze at night. Direct access to the beach below is limited to this property and our small sister property located to the south. We do not restrict beach access at our property. The beach is a wonder in of itself with large boulders and unexplored caves which makes this beach an extraordinary experience. The beach is organic in form and takes a shape and life of its own and consistently shifts, expands and retracts with the tide, wind and lunar cycles. The ocean is capable of creating a dramatic show of its own with picturesque sea spray colliding with the partially submerged boulders at the seashore. The ocean is ever changing with tides and currents and can be tumultuous at times so one must exercise caution, no lifeguard on duty. After a day at the beach, don't forget to enjoy our outdoor shower. Thatch House was built in a modern, yet understated and cozy style by a talented 3rd generation local builder who takes great pride in his craft. It has the ability to alternate between both grid and solar power making it fully self sustainable. The project was designed to take advantage of the cooling ocean breezes, but also offers modern comforts such as AC. We ask our guests to always be mindful of their energy and water usage and maintain as light a footprint as possible. Thatch House is provisioned with your basic needs, bed sheets, towels, utensils, cooking amenities, a built in gas cooktop, a refrigerator, and a dining table. Or use the grill outside and treat yourself to the fresh catch of the day. This is the essence of the authentic Bahamian out island experience. This is not a resort experience. No umbrella drinks. Its a bit of living on the edge of the world. We are seeking adventure travelers, star gazers, beach combers and romantics at heart. Enjoy! ********************************************************General information: Eleuthera and its associated smaller islands (Russel, Royal, Harbour, and Windermere Islands and associated Cays), other geographical features, and concentrations of population Geography Coordinates Coordinates: 25°06′N 76°08′W Archipelago Bahamas Adjacent bodies of water Caribbean Major islands Eleuthera and Harbour Island Area 457.4 km2 (176.6 sq mi) Length 180 km (112 mi) Width 1.6 km (0.99 mi) Highest elevation 61 m (200 ft) Administration Bahamas Districts North Eleuthera, Central Eleuthera, South Eleuthera. Secluded retreat
Shorething provided us with the isolation and relaxation we came to Eleuthera for. With its secluded beach and quaint apartment overlooking the ocean we were in need of nothing more. Our groceries were sufficient for breakfast and we explored nearby restaurants for dinners snd sunsets. Thank you as this is one of our favorite properties.

3rd year at ShoreTing
Mark's place has the best views and best little beach you can ask for. We have our coffee every morning on the private beach. Also, no need to worry about the power going out. Last year in a hurricane we still had power. Easy to get to Gregory town and ELH airport from this location. Local caretaker responds to texts if anything is needed.

Beautiful, Exotic and Fun
This was exactly what we were hoping for and what our souls needed! You are situated right on the edge of a cliff, and it feels like almost a luxurious camping excursion. It’s private, quiet, clean and charming. Nights are amazing with a bottle of wine, music and stargazing. You are really out there, so you definitely need a rental car if you want to go to the calmer Caribbean beaches to swim. Mark was quick to respond to any inquiry and the locals literally blew us away with their kindness. I absolutely recommend rainbow beach and taking a couple days to get ferried over to harbor island. It’s off season right now so my girlfriend and I felt like the entire pink sand beach was our personal beach. All in all, very very happy spending a little more to have a place that feels incredibly comfortable after a day out in the sun. 5 stars

LOCATION LOCATION !
This is the must stay location if unique lodging, rocky cliffs, private beach, amazing sunrises, and just the most scenic Bahamas beach experience is what you seek. Mid Central Eleuthera location makes travel to south or north ideal. Make sure you have an SUV (no mini car rentals) as road to unit is a rocky narrow alley through bushes that will scratch your car(rental guy freaked) All in all great place to stay.

A real gem
I can not say how wonderful this place is. Magical almost. As with most homes at the beach it must take all the ocean throws at it. She needs a facelift and the cushions in particular are a little worse for wear. The bed pillows need to be replaced as well. But he mattress is comfortable and the bedding is nice. It's the location and the way this home is situated that makes it so magnificent. The private beach below the bungalow is wild, beautiful and mesmerizing. The pounding surf is simply amazing to listen to and it never stops entertaining you. The thought of so many things when they designed this place and it makes your stay wonderful. A bigger fridge and kitchen sink would be nice. The sink in particular is a bit of a challenge as the plates and most of the cookware is larger in diameter than the sink...which is not a kitchen or even a bathroom sink but rather a small bar sink. That was the biggest drawback and it isn't a deal breaker. We were so inspired by this home that we are going to recreate it on a piece of creekside property we own back home in Austin.
