About this property
4 Bedroom, 4 Bathroom Villa. Own Pool, very secluded but not remote.
This superb villa is tucked away in its own secluded valley in the picturesque, Serra de Monchique, the Monchique mountain range. But, being in the low foothills it is not at all remote with its driveway off the Portimao to Monchique Road. There are three restaurants just a few metres from the gates, yet at the house, it is easy to believe you are alone in the world. This truly magical spot with its palm trees and beautiful mimosas in the private garden around the pool has a pretty stream running though the land and you can enjoy your own private woodland walk along the river bank.
The the beauty spot and spa village of Caldas de Monchique is just 2km up the road and the mountain village of Monchique is about 10 minutes by car while the big fishing port of Portimao with lots of nightlife is only about 20 minutes away. The beach resorts of Praia da Rocha, Ferragudo and Alvor are also in the same area.
The villa has four bedrooms, four bathrooms (2 with baths that have shower attachments, 1 with a hydrotherapy shower unit and 1 with a standard shower cubicle). Three bedrooms have balconies, while at ground level there are two patios, one of them connected to a new wooden deck with ample outdoor furniture for everyone and an attractive fire-pit. The pool area has sunbeds and a large barbecue. Indoors, the main living room is a huge open plan area with with comfortable seating for everyone and a 55" smart TV. For cooler times of year there is a wood burning stove and a supply of logs. The separate dining room also has a wood burner and French doors open directly onto the patio and sun deck, which which also has direct access to the kitchen, so it is perfect for al-fresco dining.
For shopping, Monchique has an excellent Intermarche supermarket and numerous small shops, while the large town of Portimao has every type of shop from shopping malls and hypermarkets down to tiny businesses in the back streets. Buses stop close to our gates for Monchique or Portimao, but a car is recommended for convenience.
The villa offers you a very private and quiet holiday while being centrally located. There are several good golf courses within about 20 minutes by car and also some spectacular beaches about the same distance away. Nearby, there are two interesting Portuguese Pottery shops and also the Parque da Mina historic farm park.
* Internet & WiFi is provided free to our guests via a fibre broadband connection which also provides cable television. In the event of a service failure, we will do all we can to get a speedy repair, but this is entirely in the hands of the telecoms company. Our large satellite dish picks up UK television, but it is operating at the extreme range of the UK service. In the event of a programme loss we will call out the local engineers but we cannot guarantee UK programmes.
Quinta da Mimosa is located in the foothills of the beautiful 3000ft Monchique mountains, but as it is only about 350 feet above sea level it is not up in the clouds nor 'out in the sticks'.
In August 2018, there were serious forest fires in the Monchique area. Luckily, Quinta da Mimosa was safe from this mainly because it does not have lots of pine or eucalyptus trees nearby and it also gets protection from the stream. Also, the mimosa trees do not burn so easily as other species. New growth is already hiding most of the damage to the forest areas and thousands of new trees have been planted, using more fire resistant varieties.
If you enjoy walking, the footpaths from the property leading to trails that cover the whole Monchique eco zone are worth exploring. Quite a strenuous effort is needed for some of the tracks which are quite rough, but if you are fit enough it is a good experience and one benefit of the fires is that they did "open up" the views where previously the forest had been very overgrown.

About the host
Hosted by Alan, Jenny. and Chris Philpott
In Ventnor on the Isle of Wight, England, our family ran a holiday rental business for many years. In 1986, Jenny and Alan Philpott together with Alan's late mother Joan visited Portugal for a five week holiday and fell in love with the Algarve. Returning again over the next two years, we soon found ourselves looking for a suitable location to build a large villa for our own use. Having seen so much crowded over-development along the coastline we realised that we would need to look a little way inland to find somewhere that would be secluded, private and protected from future urbanisation.
Why they chose this property
We travelled the length and breadth of the Algarve looking for the perfect spot, going up and down dirt roads, often ending up in some wonderful remote places, miles from anywhere but could not face a twenty mile trip to the nearest shops or doctor. Our fears about the coastal areas were confirmed when many nice plots we had seen the previous year were already in the centre of a housing estate or overlooked by a tower block.
Eventually, in the foothills of the Monchique mountains, we found this magical 12 acre spot with all sorts of fruit trees, cork oaks, pomegranates, orange and lemon groves and of course the lovely mimosas which brighten the place so much at the end of winter. It had once been a farm and among the trees were the ruins of the old farmhouse and stables, close to a stream that runs through the land all year. This was the perfect place to build our house, so good in fact that we had to build something special, but there was a serious snag because at that time, foreigners were not allowed to own more than one acre of land in Portugal. Luckily our lawyer found a solution, which was to purchase a Portuguese company which in turn could buy as much land as it wanted.
Alan used lots of sketch books doodling pictures of possible houses before he came up with an idea that would fit in with such a special place. The sketches became rough plans and these were turned into working drawings by a local architect. After the planning formalities and choosing a builder, work commenced in 1992. In October that year we were joined by a new member of the family, Christopher. To our surprise, the Portuguese builders were quite reliable and any delays were down to Portuguese bureaucracy. The villa was finally completed in 1993.

What makes this property unique
For anyone looking for privacy, beautiful surroundings, yet close to civilzation, this is the perfect spot. Just a short walk up the driveway to the main road, there are a couple of restaurants that serve excellent Portuguese food at reasonable rates.
Buses stop within yards of the gates, although a car is much more convenient. Only 15 - 20 minutes down the hill and you are in the city centre of Portimao, the busy beach at Praia da Rocha or the quiet bay at Praia da Vau. In the opposite direction, ten minutes up the hill is the quaint small town of Monchique where there is a very good supermarket, pharmacy and other shops, 3 petrol stations and some wonderful views especially from Foia, the highest point of the Algarve.
Also within easy reach is the spectacular west coast with its rugged cliffs and almost endless and usually deserted beaches.
