About this property
Poppy Desert House: Borrego Mid-Century Modern
The perfect combination of mid-century modern with a boho to your dream home! You will find no better place to relax, re-center, re-group, and enjoy the amazing nature and wildlife of the Borrego desert than the Poppy Desert House, named after my daughter, Poppy.
Located just across the street from the entrance to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in a certified “dark zone” that’s prime for stargazing, this modern 2BR home plus 1BR casita is a California dream for your party of ten. Both the vintage mid-60s home and the cool casita are perfect for your get away.
The expansive two-acre parcel includes a lovely patio and a private pool and hot tub area surrounded by mountain vistas. Keep an eye out for an array of wildlife as you walk the grounds or hop onto a nearby hiking trail.
A classic steakhouse experience awaits at Coyote, 2 blocks away; sweet treats can be found 1 mile further at The Fudge Factory. El Borrego serves up authentic Mexican fare less than 2 miles from your door.
ABOUT THE HOUSE & CASITA
The Poppy Desert House was designed by the famous Borrego Springs architect Richard Zerbe whose goal was to create mid-century design that took into account the unique landscape of the desert.
Sunlight and mountain views pour into the living room, where mid-century furnishings complement the home’s mid-century architecture. Recline on a sectional leather couch or armchair while the pellet stove crackles. Find your favorite shows (hulu, netflix and amazon available) on the 39” TV, or stream them to your devices with complimentary Wi-Fi.
The fully functional kitchen wows with turquoise counters and stainless steel appliances, including a double sink and a roomy French door fridge. Serve up special dinners in the immaculate dining room, furnished with an eye-catching vintage pecan mid-century table and chairs.
Ample seating and dining space awaits on the patio, equipped with two grills. Step through to the fenced pool area, where you can cool off on warm days or soak in the hot tub beneath the stars. There's another table and chair set here, plus a restroom and changing area.
The peaceful master bedroom features a queen-size bed, a desk, and sliding glass doors to the yard. The bright shared bath has a tiled tub/shower combination and a large vanity.
The guest room also has a queen-size bed, plus sliding door access to the patio and the yard. A full-size futon offers extra accommodation.
The lovely casita has a well-appointed kitchenette, a sunny living room with sleeper sofa and a memory foam style mattress, a bedroom with a queen-size bed, TV and a pristine bath with a walk-in shower.
Guest amenities include parking for four cars, laundry, and complimentary Wi-Fi.
THE LOCATION
With picturesque Anza-Borrego Desert State Park across the street, this unique home is a find for those looking to experience Southern California's great outdoors. Hellhole Canyon promises more memorable hiking 1.5 miles away.
Dine at Coyote Steakhouse 2 blocks from your door, or go for wood fired pizza with beer and wine on tap at Kesling's Kitchen within a 5-minute drive. Stock up for home-cooked meals at Center Market, just under 2 miles away.

About the host
Hosted by Terrie Kellmeyer

I have been visiting Borrego Springs and the Anza Borrego desert for many many years and always dreamed of owning my own retreat in the amazing desert to escape from the business of every day life. I love the quiet, the peace, and the stillness that the desert offers- is is a truly unique place and experience.
Why they chose this property
I fell in love with this house when I rented it in the spring of 2017. I told the owner if they ever wanted to sell, to please let me know. A few months later when I inquired about renting again, the owner let me know they were ready to sell and I jumped on the chance to own my dream home!
I named the house after my daughter Poppy. It just seemed to fit her bright and peaceful nature (and of course she was thrilled that I named our house after her!).
We use the Poppy Desert House as our family retreat and a place to come together and appreciate one another. We try and limit electronics, play lots of games, and explore the outdoors while we are here. The pool is our favorite place to relax in the summer, and we try and get up each day to watch the sunrise. The view from every window in the house are absolutely amazing.
Owning this house is truly a dream come true!
