Just minutes away from the black sand beach, Kehena, there are smoothie and fruit vendors that pop up on sunny days. It is recommended that you rent a car at the airport in Hilo, though there is a bus that swings by at the front of the neighborhood. A bike is also a very pleasant way to travel... the red road, or highway 130, is no longer red but is a beautiful road to bike along. The roads are somewhat narrow and winding around the area.
Also, Hawaii charges a 13.25% Transient Accommodation Tax and 4.712% General Excise Tax. This should already be reflected in your payment breakdown.
I also need to display the Short Term Vacation Rental Non-Conforming Use Certification requirements to you. By booking this place you agree that...

This studio is a lovely haven. It was clean and comfortable, and felt safe--not only is it in a nice neighborhood but has a full kitchen with reliable power and clean water in a kind of rural area. Also, it's in a location with some of the freshest air in the world. Kilauea erupted while I was there, but the air quality stayed good in Kalapana. Communication with the property manager was great. There aren't many safe swimming options in the area anymore, so go for the nature connection. By the way, nearby Kalani has a little shop and cafe sitting area in case you need supplies, coffee, or company. And Uncle Robert's on Wednesday nights is a true local party. Remember to wear bug spray at night!
The vacation rental unit was excellent. Well decorated, and comfortable, and all the extras provided by the owner.
Jacob was extremely helpful. We intend to return in the spring.

Mahalo nui loa! Thank you so much for staying!
We hope to see you again soon!
The property has everything that anyone could need including condiments, and a bike to ride to the beach that is so close; and soaps in the shower! And the lanai is perfect for a relaxing coffee and breakfast and listen to the ocean in the distance. Well appointed furnishings and fully equipped kitchen.. so well done. Rested well and felt so at home.
This is a fantastic property away from it all. At first, I thought it was too far a drive and wasn’t going to suit our getaway. I was wrong! Once we explored around the neighbourhood, it was the perfect place - near the water, a very quiet location, excellently-appointed, a wonderful patio to sit out at night, and very friendly and helpful property owner. I encourage you to book this property. I would definitely return!
This little hideaway is nestled near amazing black sand beaches. The remote location is perfect if you are looking to get away from the hustle of the everyday and all that it brings. Tons of nature. Easy jumps to Volcano National Park and Hilo. The house is well appointed and very comfortable. The starry nights and perfect temperatures were a delight.
Not fancy but everything we needed and super clean. Feel of natural Hawaii. Close to black sand beaches - not great swimming but the thermal pond were a plus!
From the artfully arranged towels to the stocked-with-staples pantry and kitchen, this was hands-down the best place we stayed on the Big Island! It had a lovely, large porch that we could sit outside on, even in the rain. There were pretty fruit trees in the yard and 2 fresh produce stands in walking distance. We got food delivered by Mama Echo's Kitchen nearby and it was wonderful! (You can find my Google review for further info.) This little house is nestled in a nice, quiet neighborhood. There are 2 black sand beaches close by. The renters were very responsive to any needs we had. So friendly and helpful! Not only did they give us ideas on places to go and things to see, but even provided extra table games to help while away the time after dark. It was wonderful to have a washer and dryer, a full kitchen, and a full bathroom. The only things they don't have are a TV and a microwave. We had a little trouble finding it the first night, but the actual street number is 12-313 if you're using Google. It's a long ways from town, but worth it. If you want a relaxing place to be that has all the comforts of home but in your own private efficiency in paradise, this place is for you!
Perfect place just to get away from it all. driving from Hilo Airport we thought is was far. Driving the roads from the location was the beauty of the island. We wished we could of stayed longer.
Note: there is no air conditioner, it was little warm when we got there but the evening, sleeping with the windows open and fan it was nice. The little touches provided was welcoming.
We had an amazing stay here. House was small but so comfortable and perfect for us. It had everything we needed including washer/dryer, good wifi, a full kitchen, and fruit trees right outside. We didn’t want to leave. Thanks for the wonderful stay.
Clean and comfortable stay with a very accommodating host. Will stay again if visiting the area.

I am the property manager. I built my own house just down the road from this one. I lived in it during the volcano eruption of 2018. The sky was red at night for 3.5 months and you could see and hear the volcano every night. It was wild!
