Riomaggiore is the first village of the Cinque Terre, in the south-east part of the area, and is located just on the sea. The village stands between the sea and the Appennine Mt. and was built along the little stream called Rivus Maior (from it the name Riomaggiore): the stream has been covered and today this is the main street of Riomaggiore.
Riomaggiore is characterised from the Genoese multicolored houses, built following the steep flow of the stream; from the 19th cent., with the arrival in Riomaggiore of the railway, was built a new area, called “stazione” (in english “station”)
The territory of Riomaggiore includes also the hamlets of Manarola, Volastra and Groppo and is entirely included in Cinque Terre National Park.
The village has restaurants, bars, shops, a post office and 2 banks with ATMs. Among the restaurant we suggest the “Cappùn Magro” (in Groppo hamlet, above Manarola), the restaurant “A piè de mà”, the “trattoria Via dell’Amore”, the restaurant “il grottino” and “Dau Cila”.
Moreover, there’s a diving center. From the little harbour, boats depart to the other villages of Cinque Terre and to Portovenere. Sea-lovers will find several interesting places in Riomaggiore, such as the beach of the village or that one just below the famous “Via dell’Amore”, linking Riomaggiore to Manarola.
Among the most interesting cultural sights we recommend a visit to the Church of San Giovanni Battista (14th cent.) and to the Sanctuary of Montenero, overlooking the village.
In the highest part of the historic center there’s the Riomaggiore Castle, dating back to 1260.
A lot of opportunities for trekking and hiking lovers: the famous “Via dell’Amore” (that is a part of trail n° 2) but also the trail towards Portovenere (n° 3) or those ones towards the High Way of Ligurian Mountain.
You can get to Riomaggiore by car or by train: as always, if not needed, we recommend to use the train, really the best solution to get and visit the Cinque Terre. Anyway, at the entrance of the village there’s a car park (on charge).
