About this property

Yellowstone North Gate House

The North Gate House is a beautiful, vacation home completed in 2008. The house has approximately 2,160 square feet of space on three levels.

There are many special touches throughout the house from the soaring 21 foot high ceiling of the great room to the solid oak, wide plank flooring, to the custom glass paneled deck. From the wall of windows in the comfort of the great room or outside from the deck, you will have unobstructed views into Yellowstone where herds of elk and bison can often be seen grazing. Big horn sheep are often viewed walking the ridge behind the house.

The house includes a fully equipped kitchen with a large capacity dishwasher, above the range microwave and beautiful hickory cabinets. There is central heat and air with individual controls for each floor (a must for high desert summers where temperatures can reach the 90's at times), HD satellite televisions, high speed internet access, high efficiency washer and dryer, a Renai hot water system (you'll never run out of hot water)and a bathroom on each level.

The lower level bedroom consists of two twin/single beds, an HD television, blu-ray player. The main floor bedroom has a queen bed, HD television and blu-ray player, while the upper level bedroom consists of a king size bed with a High Definition TV system and blu-ray player.

Situated in the quaint town of Gardiner, you will be able to find anything you need. There are many cafes, restaurants and numerous shops, a grocery store, post office and bank. There are fishing guides, rafting companies and outfitters that offer horseback riding both in and outside of the park.

The fishing in the area is wonderful. There are two Blue Ribbon streams within a mile of the house, the Yellowstone which is 3 blocks away and the Gardiner River approximately 1 mile.

In the winter there are many available activities such as ice skating at Mammoth Hot Springs (6 miles from the house), snowshoeing in Yellowstone and the surrounding area or cross country skiing. There is snowmobiling with rentals available in and out of the park, down hill skiing at Bridger Bowl (94 miles away) or Big Sky (175 miles) and our favorite - wildlife viewing in the Lamar Valley where you will likely see herds of bison, elk and possibly some of the Yellowstone wolves.

The National Geographic Society used the Northgate House in 2014 while working on a 2015 Yellowstone film documentary. They lived at the Northgate house while making the film and used the garage for their film editing. They also set up a blind in the yard to film some of the local wildlife. Those that have rented the Northgate House will recognize some of the scenes in the National Geographic film.

After a long hard day of activities you can relax in the hot springs of Boiling River on the Gardiner River (3 miles away) then come home to the luxury of our house overlooking Gardiner, The Northgate House.

Great convenient location! Amazing views!
Absolutely recommend this great little house for your Yellowstone adventure! Close enough to the park that you can come and go as you wish! And sometimes the “park” comes to you - we had rabbits, mule deer, big horn sheep & even an elk visit us while we were there! The view is amazing! House is clean, WELL stocked! This is one of the best stock d VRBOs we’ve stayed in! We had to 7 people - 4 adults, 2 teens & a tween… comfortably fit all of us! There’s no place like home - but we’re already missing waking up to that view! Rick is easy & responsive with communication!

Edge of Yellowstone
This is one of our favorite properties and a great location for a winter visit to the northern part of Yellowstone. Northgate House is very well maintained and comfortable and within a mile of the northern entrance to Yellowstone National Park. This gives you access to skiing and snowshoeing and animal watching in the Lamar Valley. At night you come home to a fully equipped cabin with internet, a full kitchen, laundry and 3 bedrooms. Just a great play to use as your base for exploring the park.

About the host

We live in Oklahoma where we have a ranch and business but spend as much time as possible in Montana. It has come to be our 'other' home and the place we plan to retire someday. We love spending time in Yellowstone, a place we consider to be one of the most beautiful places on earth as it is ever changing and most amazing.

Why they chose this property

We chose to build a home in Gardiner due to its proximity to YNP and because we simply liked the town where old is mixed with the new. We looked at properties on each side of the park but kept coming back to Gardiner for it's color and character. We were blessed to find the property to build on just one mile from the North Entrance to Yellowstone.

What makes this property unique

From the comfort of the house or out on the deck you have unobstructed views into Yellowstone. In the winter, we have sat in the great room and watched bison that come down from the higher elevations of the park to graze. Elk and mule deer pay frequent visits to the house. You also have a great view of the town of Gardiner. Due to its location, you have the convenience of being in walking distance to town but also privacy as the house sits on a larger lot and backs up against the side of a mountain.

When building our house we kept in mind the things we liked (and disliked) about vacation homes we had rented while traveling and built from that perspective. The comfort of our guests is truly of most importance to us.
