About this property
Acadia cottage on Long Pond 20 ft to Water, 2 cottages, Sleeps 4
This is the Premier view on Long Pond in the less populated part of the lake facing Acadia National Park with Beech, Mansel, and Bernard Mountain views. We are on 12 acres on the tip of Northern Neck. We have 2 cottages on the property. The cottages are private and have separate docks. See and read reviews of our other cottage VRBO listing 282999. This is a new listing, but we have been on VRBO 16 years!!
It is a joy to live in this house as the views are ever changing and you are constantly surrounded by nature. The eagle often perches in our large white pine trees that tower over the deck. The piliated woodpecker, many birds, deer, fox, and porcupine, can be seen in the woods. In the morning there is often a raft of loons up to 14 that congregate in front of the house. The stars on a calm dark night reflect into the water and the moon can be seen rising across the lake. The call of the loon can be heard as you fall asleep. There is a peace that comes from being here that restores you back to nature.
We have two small cottages Windiana I and II that rent together with a total of 2 bedrooms, 2 baths with a kitchen and a living room. These cottages are perfect for two couples who wish to stay together and have some privacy.
Windiana I is 20 feet to the fresh water of Long Pond and our dock. The living room has a cathedral ceiling and a bubble skylight at the center of the house. The living area is surrounded by windows with views down the lake and pine trees. It has two sofas and wicker chairs. Windiana I is so close to the water it feels like you are on a boat! The bedroom has a queen bed and view of the lake. The bathroom has just been redone with a blue and white Thasso marble floor. The kitchen is compact, but fully functional with standard oven/range and dishwasher and fridge. There is a table indoors for four. Our houses are built to live in nature with one deck 12 x 24 overlooking the lake with a 180 degree view and a side deck that is 12 x 36. The deck has a large dining table, captain’s chairs and a grill.
Windiana II is behind Windiana I and is one main room with water views from all sides. It has a queen bed, wicker couch and chairs, refrigerator, bar sink, and a full bath. There is a sleeping loft which is not available for use. The cottage has a deck with a view of the lake as well. Windiana II is private from Windiana I as it is above and behind Windiana I. Note: there is no washer/dryer in Windiana I and II. Windiana III is behind this property and will be occupied by other tenants, but sufficient distance and orientation to ensure privacy.
In front of Windiana I there is a dock that is perfect for fishing and renting kayaks at the local Acadia National Park Canoe rental. Kayaks are not provided. The water side sits on a graceful sheath of rock that reaches into Long Pond. A magnificent setting for you vacation.

About the host
Hosted by Diana Ansley

As a young child, my parents brought us to Mt Desert as my grandmother was a Somes. I have always been in love with the island and wanted to capture its magic. I have a masters in Art History and Museum work and worked in the Smithsonian before raising three children. I have always been in love with the quality of light in Maine. I am an artist and paint on the island in the summer. My work can be seen at the Cornerstone Gallery in Southwest Harbor on MDI.
Why they chose this property
In 1761 our ancestor Abraham Somes settled Mt. Desert. This property came down to us from our grandmother who was a Somes. The land was originally part of an island on Long Pond. In the 1950's a causeway was built over to the island. Today this area is now called Northern Neck. The Northern Neck Road is great for walking or running. This is in the best spot on Long Pond picked by the original settlers on Mount Desert!
What makes this property unique
It is a joy to live in this house as the views are ever changing and you are constantly surrounded by nature. The eagle often perches in our large white pine trees that tower over the deck. The pileated woodpecker, many birds, deer, fox, and porcupine, can be seen in the woods. In the morning there is often a raft of loons up to 14 that congregate in front of the house. The stars on a calm dark night reflect into the water and the moon rises often dancing through layers of fog. The call of the loon can be heard as you fall asleep. There is a peace that comes from being here that restores you back to nature.
