About this property
Lovely 2 bedroom cottage in pictoresque village, near Henley-on-Thames & Marlow
OLD ROSE COTTAGE is a 4-star rated grade II listed brick & flint holiday cottage located in the picturesque village of Turville (home to the TV serie The Vicar of Dibley) in the in the Hambleden Valley, in the heart of Chiltern Hills. Designated as an "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty" the Hambleden Valley has some of the most spectacular and characteristic Chiltern scenery: high ridges, beech woods, sweeping dry chalk valleys yet it is only 20 miles from Oxford and 25 miles from Heathrow.
This unspoilt, beautiful location offers a wide range of attractions to suit the whole family: from the finest walking and cycling paths in the Chilterns to boat trips and picnics along the nearby river Thames, visits to grand stately homes and shopping in the pretty riverside market towns of Marlow and Henley.
Old Rose Cottage dates back to the 16th century and it has been sympathetically renovated to provide all comforts while preserving its character. It's open all year and provides self-catering accommodation for up to 4 people in two bedrooms. We've been holding a 4-star rating with the AA since 2014 and we are independently assessed every year.
The cottage offers two bedrooms, one bathroom, a living room and a kitche, plus a private garden.
It is arranged over two floors: upstairs you will find two double bedrooms (a double and a twin) and on ground floor there are a lovely sitting room, a spacious kitchen/diner and the bathroom.
The two double bedrooms and stairway have original oak beams, the oak cottage style kitchen/dining room is spacious and fully equipped and the sitting room has a magnificent inglenook fireplace with log burner for cosy winter evenings in.
Facilities:
- TV with freeview
- Wi-fi
- dishwasher
- washing machine
- full size hob, oven, microwave, fridge freezer and abundance of crockery and pans
- nearby private garden - detached from the property, just a few meters away
- on-street parking for one car.
LOCATION
The tiny remote village of Turville is actually one of the most popular film and TV location of the country: beautiful St Mary is the church featured in The Vicar of Dibley, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was based at the Cobstone Windmill, which overlooks the village, and Midsomer Murders is a regular visitor here at the village, to name just a few. And it is easy to see why. Nestled in the Chiltern Hills, the postcard perfect village will give you the impression of stepping back in time with its tranquility and its delightful cottages, most of which date back to the 16th century. The breathtaking countryside of the Chilterns is without a doubt the best attraction of the area, and it is itself well worth a stay.
The best ways to explore the surroundings is walking or cycling, and the Ridgeway, The Thames Path and the Chiltern Way are here for you to do just that. Hamlets and country villages are scattered around waiting to be discovered (Swycombe, Ewelme, Fingest and Hambleden are just a few examples), with antique churches and traditional pubs. Or you can relax in front of the log burner and soak up the peaceful atmosphere of Turville.
Our beloved local pub - The Bull & Butcher - is a short stroll from the cottage, and they serve lovely food.
But there is more to keep you and your family entertained, like canoeing and cruising along the River Thames, golfing at one of the many golf courses nearby or shopping and eating out. Bicester Outlet Village is only a 20 min drive away from Turville and nearby Henley, Marlow, Wallingford, Thame and Goring offer plenty of shops and boutiques, and a superb choice of relaxing cafes, characterful pubs and restaurants catering for every taste and budget.
And if it is culture you crave, Oxford is about 20 miles away, and in Henley, Marlow, Thame and Wallingford you will find theaters, art galleries, museums and so many festivals and events you will be spoilt for choice!
Two of our favourite destinations are The River and Rowing Museum in Henley and The Roald Dahl Museum in Great Missenden; a must for families and children.
Or you can go explore National Trust properties nearby: Hughenden Manor, home to Queen Victoria prime minister Benjamin Disraeli; Cliveden estate overlooking the Thames; Greys Court, a Tudor house with an interesting history; West Wycombe village, a Chilterns village with cottages and inns dating from the 16th to 18th centuries to name a few.
TRANSPORT
Turville is in rural location and there's no public transport: own car is advised. There is allocated on-street parking for one car next to the cottage.
Nearest train stations are in Henley-on-Thames, High Wycombe (both are approximately 8 miles away) and Reading (15 miles away).
All above train stations are served by a taxi rank and/or a cab office, and many local driver/taxi services serve the area.
