About this property

Perfect for large groups of family and friends!

We are excited to share our family cottage on Higgins Lake. Higgins Lake is consistently voted the most beautiful lake in Michigan and one of the most beautiful in the world due its crystal clear waters and sandy bottom. Our cottage is perfect for bringing together large families and groups of friends, while also giving folks plenty of space to spread out and enjoy themselves.

Situated on the west side of the small end of Higgins Lake, you get to enjoy the sunrise with your morning coffee. The lake depth allows you to moor your boat close in to shore, while also allowing for plenty of area to swim (the end of our dock is about 4' deep). Our location, shielded from a lot of the wind, is one of the calmest parts of the lake. We are positioned about half-way between the South Higgins Lake State Park (an easy boat access point) and Detroit Point. We are also a quick boat ride to the Sunken Island, a sandbar in the middle of the small end of Higgins Lake, which is a popular place to gather with other boaters.

People come to Higgins Lake in the summer to swim, water ski, wake board, knee board, tube, sail, wind surf, kayak, canoe, fish and cruise the crystal clear waters. Our cottage is close to some of the best golf courses in the state, including Forest Dunes Golf Club. In the winter it is a great spot for snowmobiling, ice fishing. cross country skiing and sitting in front of roaring fire with a good book.

This house has the perfect location on Higgins Lake! We had a great time boating and fishing off the dock. The pictures don't do this house justice and it was a perfect spot for our large group getaway.

Awesome family vacation

Warm family cottage that is ideal for large family vacations! Water front is great for kids with sandy bottom and shallow for some distance off shore. Owner was great to work with and responsive to all communications.Higgins Lake is one of the best in the state with really clear water and sand bars to hang out at.

This was our second stay at the property, the upgrades in the kitchen and primary suite were amazing. As usual the amenities like kayaks, fire ring, outdoor seating added to our overall enjoyment of the week. I would recommend any large group looking for a place to stay to give this strong consideration. The owners are amazing in their concern that guests enjoy their stay.

Heaven on Higgins

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at this property. The owners thought of absolutely everything wood for fires, every kind cooking accessory or tool you need! We were also happy to be able to use the Weber grill.. our families used the kayaks and fishing boat. We can’t wait to book again for next year! We made great memories.

A Great Time Was Had By All

Everything was great. Communications with Katie were prompt. The house was so well stocked with everything you would need. We loved having the laundry facilities. Perfect for large groups! There is plenty of space...pictures don’t do it justice!

We’ve rented at Higgins for the last 3 years and this was our favorite! Spacious, clean and a great location. We really like the kitchen table so our group of 16 could eat together. There is a lot of room to gather at the fire pit near the lake and firewood was provided. The owners thought of everything and the welcome basket was a very nice touch. It can’t be easy opening your family cottage to others but we’re so glad they did!!

Family Lake Vacation

Lake vacation experience for all ages. Enough space for 16 family members. Comfortable home. Plenty of property to play. Lake access right on property. Had a great time swimming, fishing and tubing. Higgins Lake Get-away

Katie and her family have a beautiful home on Higgins Lake. The lot is huge and the waterfront beautiful. The home was clean, well-stocked, and just as represented in the online pictures. The large kitchen and dining area were great for our group of nine golfers that spent the weekend. And there was more than ample bathroom and bedroom space. The only slight drawback was that there was no bathroom on the second level, but that was not a big workaround. Katie was very attentive and a great host. We would stay at home again should we travel to the area. A great weekend was had by all!

Family Vacay 2022

This rental was a great experience! Katie, the Property Manager/Owner, was so helpful and always available. I felt like she was a part of our family, even though I never met her! We had such a great time. The kitchen was wonderful because it allowed us to all be together for meals and entertainment. This was also the most beautiful lake we have ever experienced. Our "littles" were able to play in the water by the dock without us worrying about the depth of the water (of course with lifejackets). This was, by far, one of the best vacations we have had as a family! Thank you, Katie, for being so delightful to work with!!

Wonderful vacation home!

This house on beautiful Higgins Lake was perfect for our large family. The 7 bedrooms provided adequate sleeping space for the 11 adults and 10 kids in our group, and the kitchen/dining area with a table that seats at least 14 was great for all of the cooking and eating our family does. With lots of little ones, we appreciated the large, grassy yard that separates the house and the beach. The furnishings are older yet comfortable with a “cottage” feel, and it is clear this house is a special place for the owners. While I am admittedly a “clean freak” I do think the house, and the bathrooms and kitchen in particular, could benefit from some deep cleaning but I also understand that the weekly turnover can make this difficult, and it was nothing that took away from the enjoyment we had in all being together. Katie, the owner, was super gracious and responsive in communicating with us and responding quickly to any questions we had. We have stayed at many VRBO properties through the years and our kids said this is one they would definitely like to return to! Highly recommend!

Spacious (Homey & Cozy) Family Space in Beautiful Place.

Our family would definitely return. Higgins Lake was exceptional & this house made the stay special. Communication with owner was easy & prompt. Helpful & kind! Via e-mail Katie answered questions for planning & texted throughout the week. We also spoke on the phone. At all times Katie was helpful & responsive. Kitchen: Very well stocked with all tools, spices, oils, etc. Plenty of pans, glassware, kid stuff, dishes, & serving ware for the whole family. Amazing dining space! The kitchen table was awesome for dinner, drinks, games, & gathering. We made many meals & had tons of fridge space (using garage fridge + beverage fridge in kitchen). Stove left something to be desired, but we heard it is scheduled for repair. The grill was on the smaller side, which was easy to navigate. Despite warm days, the evenings were comfortable with the fans provided in each room. We were nervous about no A/C, but it was not a problem. Nightlights perfect for getting to bathroom downstairs. Notes: - Amazon does not deliver - Instacart does not deliver Stores: - Higgins Lake Market: small selection deli, produce + basic dry goods - RJ’s Best Choice Market (Houghton Lake): Amazing deli! Lots of locally made jams, produce, breads, smoked items. Beautiful Relaxing Property

Our multi-generational family of 15 gathered from various places across the U.S. for our annual vacation. This property was ideal for a relaxing and spacious getaway. The forested property on an extraordinary lake was both peaceful and gave us many opportunities for memorable activities. We've rented many large VRBO properties over the past decade, but without a doubt, this property was the most well and generously equipped. It was as though someone had been living here up to the minute we arrived. As an example, there were more spices, pots, pans and utensils than we have at our own kitchen at home! The house has a very rustic charm, but is exceptionally well cared for and the pride of ownership shows. The seven bedrooms (6 on the 2nd floor) were great, but having all three bathrooms on the ground floor caused a bit of confusion for the youngest ones in the middle of the night. Lake Higgins has some of the cleanest lake water and shores that we've ever experienced. The fact that the fine sand shallowness of the lake perimeter extends well over 50 yards from shore made the lake experience for our grandkids feel like they were in an exceptionally large swimming pool. Yet, we found the best fishing of the lake 50 yards out from our shore where the lake bed drops off. Kids were thrilled at being able to catch 20 fish each outing. Most were rock bass and too small to keep, but the memories of fishing with success were well worth it. Property owner (Katie) was very responsive to our questions before and during out stay. This is a wonderful property that lets you share in the legacy of the many years that created it.

Perfect Spot For a Large Family Get-Together!

We had a great time at the Higgins Lake Cabin! It was clean, spacious and extremely well-stocked in all aspects, with an epic dining/puzzle/game table and plenty of room both inside and out for our multi-generational, extended family gathering. When the weather cooperated, we were enjoying the lake, the huge lawn, & the fire pit; when it didn't, the enormous garage was a perfect place for ping pong & corn hole. Katie was a delight to work with.... helpful, flexible, organized. 10 stars all around!

Great accommodation for large family groups

Beautiful home on a gorgeous lake with plenty of space for large family groups. One small downside was 6 of the 7 bedrooms are on the second floor with all 3 bathrooms on the main floor. This was a bit tricky because of young grandchildren, but our week together was still amazing. We enjoyed swimming, fishing, boating, campfires, and lots of games around the huge dining table where we could gather all together for meals and fun. Highly recommend!

Awesome lakeside retreat and window into history

Staying at this property was fun for our whole family, both kids and adults. The property is well-kept and well furnished. This house has been in the owner's family for over 100 years! It was neat to learn about the history of the house and all the memories there, and then to be able to make memories of our own. The lake, with its depths of 2-4 feet of super clear water, was amazing, especially for our little ones. We have been to houses on the great lakes, but this lake by far was much more utilized by the little kids due to the shallow depths, no big waves, and the long deck helped out a LOT. It was really nice that they let us sit on the pontoon boat...it added a sitting area literally on the water where those of our party not in the water could be part of the activities of those who were swimming and playing in the water. The house was well stocked, and we were able to find everything we needed. There were a number of extras that we don't always find at other homes, and those things made the stay that much nicer. We enjoyed swimming, kayaks, the row boat, fishing, sitting on the lake, sitting around the bonfire, and spending time in the spacious kitchen dining table! There were plenty of rooms and beds and bedding for everyone.
