Enjoyed our stay with our pup here. Very short walk to beach which if you go to the right is dog friendly. Easy walk to shops and restaurants. Small studio but had just what we needed. Very clean and tastefully decorated.
We enjoyed our stay and the apartment was clean and comfortable, but the bed was too small. Other than that we enjoyed our stay and liked the amenities.
Everything was perfect. Elena does an amazing job running the place. The location is extremely close to the beach and we had our dog with us, the beach lets Dogs come too. We enjoyed hanging out at the beach. The unit was spotless and fully supplied with everything you would need. We enjoyed it and plan to come back soon!
Went to partake in the 2023 Avocado Festival. Very clean perfectly situated location. Never took car out entire weekend within walking distance of beach and downtown. Highly recommend for a couple’s weekend.
My husband and I were heading north and wanted to stay near Santa Barbara. We hadn’t heard of Carpinteria, but the apartment was affordable, took dogs and was near the beach. This place was perfect. It is small and it is at the back of the building, but that didn’t matter at all. It is squeaky clean, exceptionally well stocked, decorated nicely and in a perfect location. I wouldn’t hesitate to go here again!
Excellent quiet stay with wonderful property manager service and kindness
My husband grew up in carpenteria and we have come to visit for years. We often stayed with his parents and camped. They have both passed now and this is the first time we have chosen a vacation rental for our stay. We appreciated Elena and her thoughtfulness and attention to details in the apartment. We slept well and enjoyed the immaculate gardens even though the weather was cold. We would stay here again.:)
If you want a very clean, stylish, and comfortable place to sleep for 1 or 2 while you’re out exploring the beaches, food, and shops of Carpinteria, stay here! Everything in this studio is top notch from the bed to the small fridge/freezer, to the beach towels and chairs, to the bathroom!
The location is perfect - on the peaceful and quiet side of town by the salt water marsh but only a couple blocks from everything you need.
I also met Elena and she was VERY nice!
The negative reviews are absolutely absurd.
Do you want to have your vacation start with a crying baby next door? How about an unwanted bugs, specifically silverfish, in your "kitchen"? How about scummy glassware and greasy dishes? How about having to take short showers because the hot water runs out? Then this is the place for you. It is close to the beach - it's only saving grace. But beware of hidden charges and lack of cooperation from the managment.

Not Worth the Cost
Pros: Our unit was clean, the bed was comfortable, the shower pressure was great, and the kitchenette had a Keurig with lots of coffee choices.
Cons: Location of the unit (in the back of the building, off the parking area, next to what looked like a maintenance room, away from the nice-looking apartments overlooking a green courtyard in the main part of the building); low ceiling; no natural light; a tiny, dark patio walled off from the parking area with a view of the ladder and pipes propped up in the next unit over; very thin walls and ceiling, so you hear babies crying and other guests stomping around above you.
My main issue: The price was not commensurate with what we received. I don’t mind paying when there are amenities such as a lovely view, or a Jacuzzi, or even a bathtub. Or paying to stay in a place that doesn’t have a lot of frills, but feels warm and welcoming.
Tropic Shores says they offer “luxury apartments.” Maybe they do. Maybe those were the apartments we passed by when we walked through the courtyard and out to the parking area to reach our unit. Maybe the “modern studio” we stayed in is in a different rental category. I don’t know. All I know is, our unit felt like an afterthought—something tacked on to what could very well be a nice collection of garden apartments.
I would never return, and I will never book anything through VRBO again.
Beautiful spacious apartment one block from Carpinteria Beach
Exceptional apartment, comfortable, clean, spacious. Very nice host as well. One block from the beach and the Salt Marsh is directly across the street. Carpinteria is lovely and its just a three block walk to the main street and all the restaurants and bars and shops. Great fun.
We were pleasantly surprised when we walked in and saw how nice the rental was. It was very clean, close to the water, and downtown. We felt very welcome and will definitely stay at this property again. Thank you for all that you did to make our stay such a nice one. ❤️
Location is fabulous. Very clean. The bed is very very comfortable.

About the host
Hosted by Mike Krumm
Carpinteria has been our family's favorite vacation destination since I was a small child in the 1950's. After several years of camping at Carpinteria State Campgrounds, our parents decided to build Tropic Shores Apartments and make this our second home. A few years ago, after enjoying a long life, our parents both passed away, leaving Tropic Shores to the four brothers, Tom, Richard, Mike, and Jeff. Since we all feel a very special connection to Carpinteria, we decided to remodel the building from ground up, and keep it in the family for our children to enjoy.
What makes this property unique
Carpinteria is one of the las remaining small beach towns found during the mid 1900's, essentially unchanged over the last 5 or 6 decades. It's a town where you may feel safe allowing your children to walk or bicycle through town on their own. Named "The World's Safest Beach" because of the protection of the Channel Islands, the surf rarely gets very large...but still large enough to enjoy the waves. When you're ready for something more exciting, there are dozens of wineries, golf courses, movie theaters, and restaurants in nearby Santa Barbara and Ventura.
