Hummingbird Cottage is just off the main road on the banks of the Greenbrier River in the lovely hamlet of Fort Spring. The cottage features 2 private bedrooms and one bathroom. An open floor plan and large windows make for a bright and airy interior.
There are two steps up to the front door, and no interior steps.
There is direct access to the river and ample private parking. Self check-in with keycoded entry.
In the summertime, the flowers and feeders attract many hummingbirds to the cottage. There is no smoking indoors. We regret that we will no longer allow pets except for repeat guests on a case-by-case basis.
The kitchen has new appliances, including toaster, coffeepot and microwave oven. You will find essentials like stainless steel pots and pans, knives and cooking tools, dishes, glasses and flatware. Kitchen towels and potholders are provided. There is no dishwasher. A dish rack and drainboard are provided, along with sponges and dish soap.
There is a separate dining room, a breakfast room with windows facing the river and a spacious living room with 49" Smart TV, Blu-Ray player, comfortable sectional couch and good task lighting. The cottage has a DSL internet connection fast enough for gaming and streaming video. The TV has a basic Roku subscription, or you can log in with your own Roku/Netflix/Sling/Fire etc account to view your own subscription programming. WiFi connection to the internet is provided as well.
There is a newer Samsung washer and dryer. The washer has an internal heating element to allow a long wash cycle with very hot water. There is an outdoor clothesline too. AT&T mobile phones have little or no service here but other carriers seem to work fine.
You will have use of the entire house and yard with access to the river
We live a short distance away and are available as needed.

This area is beautiful, with large elevation changes, rolling terrain, karst features like sinking creeks, springs and caves. It's rural with cows, sheep and horses grazing the hillside pastures between emerald green hayfields and cool, shady forests. Through all this flows the Greenbrier river and nearby tributaries Second Creek, Anthony Creek and Muddy Creek. Fly fishing is some of the best you'll find anywhere, with trout and others stocked throughout the spring months courtesy of the National Fish Hatchery in Nearby White Sulphur Springs (The hatchery is a fun place to visit and hosts special events throughout the year).

Cass Scenic Railway is about 75 miles away and offers excursions with a steam locomotive, a favorite destination for leaf peepers in the warm days of autumn. Super-clean, cute cottage on the banks of a bubbling river. Great spot for a relaxing get-away. Our hosts were super responsive and took good care of us.
My friends and I had a wonderful time staying at this property. It’s beautifully peaceful and refreshing. Chris and Tom really take care of you to ensure that all goes to plan. 100 percent recommend!
This cottage was tucked away in a quiet and peacefully setting on Greenbier River. Right from the back yard you can drop in your kayaks or drive 20 minutes up the road to the local Island Park and kayak back to the cottage. There is a cute town near by to get groceries and shopping. Must see the Lost World Carvern and Coal Mine Museum at Berkley. Chris was an amazing host and the cottage was very clean and well stocked. We truly enjoyed our stay at the Hummingbird cottage and would love to visit again in the future.
The property manager (Chris) was so very helpful with the check in. I got directions and instructions about getting in the house. It is an older house, but it was spotless when we arrived. All of the appliances worked fine, and we made Thanksgiving dinner. Very quiet area and had no issues.
The property is beautiful and we spent every evening by the firepit on the river. The house was very comfortable, clean and had basic things provided to cook, clean, and shower. Chris, the host, was available and so nice when we locked ourselves out of the house, thank you Chris and sorry for the trouble!
Great location and cute little horse on the Greenbrier River. Clean and easy to enjoy. The best part though was the Chris and Tom the host. They were very good about communicating and were concerned about how well we were managing during a weather event. Great people!
My wife and I used the Hummingbird Cottage as our base to explore the wider area, including Lewisburg, the New River Gorge, the Washington/Jefferson National Forest and more. We enjoyed our time here and especially like the nature show that was on display right at the cottage. Most nights when we came home, we were greeted by deer (including several bucks) hanging out in the back yard. I also caught some bass in the Greenbrier River right by the property. The cottage itself is very clean and comfortable, and Chris immediately answered any questions we had.
The cottage is clean and right on the river. We stayed there to be near my brother who lives down the road. The full beds were a little small, but they were pretty comfortable. I loved having the washer and dryer available. The house had all we needed and they make sure you have waters, milk for coffee, coffee, and a few sundry items as well. It is cute and it was warm with central heat and air. We will likely be back again when we can make use of the chairs and fire pit on the riverbank. Beautiful location! Hosts were very responsive and easy to work with.
My wife and I had a great stay at the cottage. Chris and Tom are fantastic hosts. The cottage is clean, comfortable, and well stocked with all the essentials. Although the refrigerator and cabinets were stocked for breakfast or a dinner meal we didn’t take advantage. The cottage is located minutes from Lewisburg and many area attractions. Location on the River is nice to come back to after a day of sightseeing. I hired a local fly fishing guide, Jacob Ott of Otters Guide Service and had a productive morning of trout fishing. We would love to return and highly recommend the cottage.
We were thoroughly impressed from the time we set foot inside the property. It is exactly as described in the photos and was cleaner than anyone's house that I've ever been to. It was laid out in a very thoughtful way and had Good vibes and energy. Being so close to the river was a very nice addition to the stay and the chairs and everything that we had available made it extra special. I will be coming back at least annually and always staying in this cottage. Can't thank Chris enough for all the communication and time that she spent helping us out. You can't not enjoy yourself in this cottage.
Came for a concert fell in love with your home state-
First visit to West Virginia-
We booked for the Turnpike Troubadours concert.
Concert was canceled due to weather however as disappointing as that may sound we didn’t miss a beat fishing, wild life, beautiful, beautiful country. I would also like to thank Chris and Tom personally,
I was diagnosed with Celiac disease 3-4 months ago, they took the time to help my family and I with safe restaurants even offered to stock up supplies for us if we wanted them too-
They put the human in humanity.
Thank you for sharing your home with us.
Hope to bring my granddaughters next year if you’ll have us.
Many Thanks and Blessings,
Randy
The cottage was just as described. There were so many little touches that made it feel like home. This was the cleanest property we have ever stayed at. My wife is a bit of a clean freak and she was pleasantly surprised. The river in the backyard is beautiful. We sat in the chairs just watching the geese and water most days. We visited the town of Lewisburg and had some great finds in the shops and boutiques. The only drawback is the houses that are close by. This wasn’t an issue for us though because the properties on either side of us were empty during our stay. It isn’t as secluded as we’d hoped but still a wonderful property. This property is pretty amazing! We will definitely be visiting again.

Unfortunately Disappointed
The inside of the house was clean but the old musty smell was terrible. Owner definitely needs to address the musty wet smell. It left us concerned if there was mold. The house is very old and in need of updates to be considered vacation rental property. Expected this house to be more a vacation location in the River vs located in a run down area. . It made for a very unpleasant stay. Neighbors were too close and wasn’t the River location getaway as excepted from the pictures.
Nice area wished it was more secluded and more to do at house. But well worth the money and hit the spot for a little getaway! Place is nice and clean, beds are really comfortable!
The house was immaculate on the inside. Back yard to the river was a great place to sit and read. The river was beautiful and crystal clear. Owners treat you as guests to their place and were extremely nice. Even though as with most river properties your neighbors are right there, the only one we saw or heard was the neighbor to the left and he was quiet and just doing his own thing.
I was leary at first sight and definitely judging a book by its cover due to needing fresh paint and a touch of power washing but the inside was beyond reproach when it came to style, cleanliness and comfort. Guessing that has to do with water damage from past floods and hoping these remnants of "Ian" do not cause any damage or flooding. Thank you Chris and Tom for sharing your lovely place by the river. Oh, and thanks for the extra effort for firewood......just too windy to light a fire.
And the surrounding drives were beautiful too.
Relaxing and peaceful. A proper home from home, with a perfect host!
A comfortable cottage in a peaceful, rural location on the banks of the Greenbrier river. The cottage was well apportioned and so comfortable, all helped by the most generous and helpful of hosts.
We really enjoyed our stay at hummingbird cottage. Chris was a wonderful host. The cottage came stocked with farm fresh eggs, half and half, butter, coffee etc. It was really clean and ideal for people with chemical sensitivities as there are non-scented cleaning products/policies in place. Thank you so much!
We had such a great time at this property! The setting is lovely - lots of time for reading books and enjoying firepits by the river. The house is super cozy and they provide so many thoughtful staples in a very well stocked kitchen and bathroom. Really easy drive into Lewisburg for great restaurants and shopping. Highly recommend!
