About this property

Mt Hood’s historic Cedarwood Cabin

Stoke the woodstove and watch the fire, read, write, relax. Head out to nearby trails or hit the ski slopes. Then return to your own private basecamp. Hand-built in 1922 and lovingly restored. Simple and rustic. If you love hand-crafted details, you'll fall in love with Mt Hood’s Cedarwood Cabin.

A beautiful enamel woodstove is the centerpiece--with firewood provided!

The queen-sized bed sleeps two, and the folding futon couch can offer an additional sleeping spot. Two sleeping bags and extra blankets provided for slumber-party style sleeping (or forts).

The kitchen is basic, but has tools to turn your groceries into great meals: a plug-in hot-plate and griddle (no oven), makes for classics like pasta dinners or hotcakes and omelet breakfasts. Microwave, coffee grinder, french press, and an assortment of bowls, dishes and utensils are at the ready. Or enjoy the nearby restaurants and brewpubs of Welches.

For travelers accustomed to more modern accommodations, not to worry, you can fall in love here, too. But please know that this cabin, like all historic cabins, can get chilly in the morning, has simple cooking set up, and is by design, a rustic and simple structure.

Cedarwood is a magical place to slow down, unwind, unplug, relax. You won't find a TV, but you'll find fun books on hiking and Mt Hood history, places to read, to rest, to reconnect. Fall asleep to the gentle patter of rain.

AMAZING SYAY
Cedarwood cabin was the most amazing stay. The smell of the cedar and all the finishing touches Ian has included makes a perfect stay. it’s very well equipped, we did our own cooking and sat on the balcony in the evening with a blanket and a beer. The area is so pretty and out only regret is not staying longer.

An absolute gem
Hats off to Ian, this place is amazing. He has gone above and beyond to keep this place authentic to it's history and location from the cabin itself down to the record selections. The first thing you notice is the beautiful wood stove with plenty of kindling and wood provided. The bed complete with down comforter and pillows was comfy and toasty. A microwave, hotplate, electric griddle and waffle iron give you plenty of cooking options. Shower was hot with great pressure. You are provided guide books with plenty of hikes, restaurant recommendations and a history of the property. Our 5 year old excitedly asked if this could be our "new winter headquarters" and we completely agree.

About the host

Hello,
My name is Ian, and I am honored to share Cedarwood cabin with you. I am a 7th generation Oregonian. My ancestors came over the Oregon Trail, which passes very close to Cedarwood Cabin. I grew up hiking, skiing, and camping on Mt Hood. In high school, I volunteered with the Mt Hood National Forest, and lived in a cabin built by the CCC during the Great Depression and gave tours of Timberline Lodge. That experience created the dream to one day restore a historic Mt Hood cabin. 30 years later, I finally realized that dream.

Why they chose this property

The first time I saw Cedarwood it captured my heart. It was weathered grey. A simple cabin, much like the ones I slept in at summer camp on the Oregon Coast. It wasn't for sale when I first saw it, but I kept it in my mind. After a year of looking for the perfect cabin, it happened to come up for sale. I immediate made an offer and wrote a heartfelt letter. Luckily, it reached the grandson of the original builder, who loved the cabin dearly. He recognized that I was the perfect person to be the next steward of Cedarwood.

What makes this property unique

Stepping into Cedarwood makes me immediately take a deep breath. It has that smell of wood and woodsmoke and home-cooked meals, mixed with the scent of the forest--trees and moss and ferns. They say a violin's sound improves the more it is played. A violin is essentially a finely-crafted wooden box; Cedarwood is essentially the same thing, of a larger scale. All the laughter, stories, and conversations around the fire have made it sweeter.
