About this property
Historic home, Portage views, close to MTU, downtown Hancock
A one of a kind built in 1895, historic home. Elevated (hillside) with beautiful woodwork, wood floors, tall ceilings, antique furnishings yet modern kitchen and bath. Private dining room, parlor. Full 3 stories ; main floor living, kitchen, dining; 2nd floor 2 bedrooms and sitting room, and bath, 3rd floor large expansive renovated attic with separate bedroom and sitting area. This is a quiet home with radiator heat, up to date appliances, beautiful views from the enclosed front porch. There is a large unfinished basement with laundry facility, and covered entrance from the basement to the garage. Due to the multiple levels, the house has a lot of staircases to climb so may not be appropriate for those who cannot manage stairs. We also recommend bringing slippers with rubber soles. We have a few extra but we can't match The comfort of your own. The 1 bathroom is very large; has a 6 ft. claw foot tub, and separate shower. We do daily snow removal (after 10 am) and we allow parking in the garage (at your own risk). We make exit and entry simple; through the garage via keypad into a door/tunnel into the basement. We are strict on rules to respect the integrity of the floors and furnishings; no shoes on once inside the home (anything above the basement). We are 5 minutes from downtown Hancock, 5 minutes across the bridge to MTU, 5 minutes to Mt. Ripley. Please be respectful of furnishings (many breakables, and fragile items).

Things we enjoyed... the beautiful old home that retains the gorgeous woodwork of years long past with no lack of expected modern conveniences, the collection of lovely furniture, the toasty radiators, and a great location.

Could not have asked for more lovely guests and the appreciation of historic preservation. Thank you for staying with us!
Great historic home in the heart of Hancock. We enjoyed our stay in this unique house that I would highly recommend visiting. Pam was great and quick to follow up with our questions. Very clean and nicely updated while keeping the essence of the house.
A classic old Upper Peninsula house. We appreciated the convenience to Michigan Tech, the kitchen amenities, and the upstairs bonus room.
Just be aware for summer travelers…there is no air conditioning like most houses in the UP. The neighborhood was quiet and there were fans in rooms for a little ventilation, but 90+ daytime highs can make for a challenge to cool things down.
Pamela was a wonderful host and very accommodating throughout our stay!
Overall good place to stay - stairs going upstairs very slippery
Overall nice place to stay. House was quiet and clean. Recommend owners put some type of traction on the steps going upstairs to prevent anyone from getting hurt.
We didn’t have any issues or injuries - thought I’d share feedback on that.
We stayed at this historic home during move-in weekend at MTU. The location could not have been more perfect! Just outside of the hustle in Houghton but close enough to get back to easily. The home itself displays its age (tons of character) but is so very well maintained! Thank you Pamela for allowing us to stay in your home!
Very nice property with a short walk to downtown. The house is large with lots of room and the included garage to park on is a bonus. My biggest gripe about the house is that there is no air conditioning which maybe we should have expected for an older home.
We really enjoyed this place. Location is quick to MTU and to the bike trails, and almost anything you want to do. So many interesting things (art, stones, furniture, etc) to look at in the house. Bed was super comfortable.
The home was perfectly located for our purposes in Hancock. The house is being beautifully restored and is appointed with very nice furniture that fits with the restoration of the house. We found it had everything we needed and a third floor room that was perfect for spending time alone if you needed to. Pamela provided information about the area and was prompt at getting back to us with any questions we had. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Hancock.
The apartment has all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay.
The apartment is located in a very pedestrian friendly part of downtown Wausau.
The apartment managers are very prompt in answering any issue.
I recommend this loft apartment as well as recommending Wausau as a place to sprend a few days as a tourist.
House is beautiful; with stained glass and antique furnishings. We loved the 3rd floor also, which was more modern and had a smart tv. Very much enjoyed our stay and it was very close to downtown Hancock and Houghton. Highly recommend.

Thank you Amie-it was a pleasure hosting you and your family!
Great location for walking in Hancock or across the bridge to Houghton. In a quiet neighborhood. You feel like you are staying in the home of your Aunt with the piano and antiques. Very nice updated kitchen. Be prepared for lots of stairs.
The house in a charming neighborhood and it's an easy walk to downtown Hancock or across the bridge to Houghton. The property has a great view of Portage Lake. The house has been updated but retains the original historical charm including an underground passage from the garage to the house. The host was very responsive and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay !!
Lovely historic home to rest and discover what the Peninsula has to offer.
Nice welcoming host.

Why they chose this property
A representative sample of the past opulence that graced the Houghton/Hancock area during it's heyday as a mining capital (copper). A one of a kind experience being in a historic home with many modern conveniences. Centrally located to reach both universities, and downtown areas.
