About John and Chrissie Stephen
Following a busy career in banking and project management with frequent international travel, John decided that he would love to follow his dream of settling in southern France on the banks of a beautiful river. After many years living in sunny Cyprus, Chrissie didn't need much encouragement to make the move! Their joint interest in welcoming and meeting people made the gîte opportunity the perfect choice; especially as Chrissie has worked in hospitality and marketing for many years.
John and Chrissie Stephen purchased this Cottage in 2015
Why John and Chrissie Stephen chose Clairac
After a number of years of searching for the perfect home on a riverbank, they fell in love with the river Lot and discovered the rustic charm of Les Séchoirs with offers the fun of fishing, boating, swimming for much of the year bit also enjoying the roaring open fire during the brief winter months. Once a large tobacco growing area, the two large drying barns (Séchoirs) in the garden are similar to many in the locality. Today however, the area today is well known for its fruit production which includes strawberries, kiwi fruit, apples, pears and the best known of all .... it's plums - les pruneaux d'Agen. To the north and west of the Lot river valley, are the vineyards of Bordeaux and Bergereac with the Dordogne region on our doorstep. Northern Spain and the Pyrenees are just a few hours drive away...
What makes this Cottage unique
It is easy to fall in love with Les Séchoirs! The history of the beautifully renovated cottages and tobacco barns that stand on the banks the river Lot, its spacious gardens and fishing pontoons and stunning infinity pool and its close proximity to the Clairac with its weekly market, river beach, restaurants and coffee shops...or maybe it's just the joy of relaxing with a glass of local wine on the riverbank terrace watching the sun set...

The Road to Clairac
Jan and I had planned a French road trip with Les Sechoirs as our chill out week by the river. We were not disappointed. Our gite Les Tabacs was a beautiful retreat with the river, fishing platform and boat at the bottom of the garden. John and Chrissie we welcoming, friendly and full of ideas to fill our days. We did venture out to some beautiful villages and spent some time in Bordeaux but much of the time we were more than happy to spend time by the river or the pool. Clairac just a short walk along the river is small but hosts some surprisingly good restaurants, our favourites being the Creperie d'Eglise and the fabulous L'Ecuelle D'Or. I did get the fishing rods out occasionally but although the carp did not cooperate I was so relaxed it did not seem to matter.
It was a pleasure to host Ron and Janet. They were the perfect guests and we enjoyed their stay. We were impressed and thankful that they left the gîte in perfect order. We would be delighted to welcome them again.
Style in a stunning location
Every bit as impressive as the photos and more! The views of the river from the bedrooms were wonderful and from the infinity pool even better. We in Les Tabacs and the extra living space more than made up for the short walk round to the riverside deck; the styling touches were just enough to make it special without becoming kitsch. Everything was clean and well-maintained and well-equipped. Our hosts, John and Chrissie, could not have been more welcoming and full of helpful knowledge and tips to make the most of enjoying the area. The local supermarket was a pleasant few minutes walk away along the riverside and stocked everything we needed so self-catering could not have been easier. Beyond Clairac, we explored several of the bastide villages and a trip to Chateau Bonaguil was a real hit with our teenage daughters ("It's Narnia!"). Only the pleasure of lazing in and by the pool prevented us from enjoying more of what the area had to offer. Overall, the best two weeks of holiday we have had in years.
Thank you for your lovely review and we are delighted that you and your daughters enjoyed your time with us so much. We hope to see you again; perhaps in Les Pêcheurs next time!
The perfect way to enjoy a holiday! Thanks to our wonderful hosts Crissie and John, who provided us with all we needed. Starting with a wonderful quiet accommodation and spacious premises with a refreshing pool. You didn‘t even need a car to get to the next supermarket or bakery and still so quiet. Crissie and John were extremely helpful with any useful information you need regarding activities, sights or places to eat.
The gite is very cozy, there’s nothing you would miss.
Still plenty to see, we will come back next year. Thanks for everything, we are looking forward to seeing you again!
Thank you for your review. It was a real pleasure to host you and your lovely family and we look forward to seeing you again in summer 2020! Best wishes John and Chrissie
Les Séchoirs was once a tobacco farm which has been beautifully restored to provide luxury sell catering family accommodation on the banks of the river Lot. Here you can fish for specimen carp, catfish, pike, perch etc or boat up the river enjoying the wildlife and beauty of this special part of France. With the village providing shopping, restaurants and bars just 5 minutes easy walk, there's no need to drive everywhere. Les Séchoirs is perfectly located for trips into the Dordogne; visits to vineyards with wine tasting; cycling routes; walking, horse riding, swimming, boating; plus river fishing with sizeable carp, pike and catfish!
