About this property

Beachfront Cottage TVNC#1361

Step back in time to the charm of old Kauai under the swaying palm trees at the Anini Boat House. Slow down, unplug, and savor the tropical beauty at this romantic one-bedroom Beach House with the sound of the ocean lapping on the shore 75 feet from your front door.

Want an authentic old school Kauai experience with just enough modern amenities, this is your Beach House. Located across a quiet road from the beach, with the expansive Pacific ocean in front of you and a tropical jungle garden with lava rock wall outdoors offering lush gingers, orchids in the trees, coco palms, and banana trees. You will feel that you have shipwrecked on a paradise island that is all your own, (there are other people on the beach at times). Enjoy the Tranquil, usually calm waters of Anini Beach in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Anini Beach has the longest and widest fringing reef in the Hawaiian Island chain. Enjoy Snorkeling, Stand up Paddle Boarding, Kayaking, Windsurfing, Kite Board, Surfing, Hiking, Swimming, Fishing, World class Golf, Tennis, Horseback Riding, Whale Watching (December thru March), Dolphins, Turtles, and you never know what treasures will wash up on the beach!

This Beach House embraces the open-air Hawaiian lifestyle. Nearby you’ll find historic sites, shopping, golf, restaurants, and lots more sandy beachfront along the coast of Kauai.

Get out and discover Kauai; consider a hike along the Kalalau Trail or an afternoon exploring the Haena Beach Park, barbecue outside in shade of the areca palms. Kauai has far more sandy beaches then the other Hawaiian Islands.

Cozy, beautiful cabin on the beach
We had a great time. A great spot, great host, and a setting out of movie. For a secluded getaway on the north shore this place is terrific

Our stay in the boathouse on Anini beach
This rental is amazing! The boathouse is charming and has everything you need and the yard and gardens are beautiful. You are steps away from Anini beach, which in our opinion is the best beach on the island 🙂

Charming
Everything we expected and more! The cottage was Like stepping back in time. So many interesting objects to discover. Truely unique! The location was incredible! Quiet and private but just a short drive to everything you need. The beach right out the front door, and the beautiful gardens behind the cottage were spectacular!

Absolute Paradise
We couldn't have loved this property more. It is a perfect little home just steps from the beach. Like most Hawaiian homes, it doesn't have air conditioning, but it has well-screened windows, so we slept with them open at night. It is clean and well-appointed with a comfortable bed. Most importantly, it is on a secluded road well away from most people visiting Anini Beach. Some early mornings and evenings we had the beach to ourselves, but we were always two of maybe 10 or 12 at the most. The home included beach chairs and towels, and Stephanie provided us with some excellent recommendations for hikes and other activities. Internet is spotty in the immediate area, so we were also thankful for the strong wifi. We are already dreaming of how we can get back to this beautiful property as quickly as possible.

Gary, the owner of Anini Boat House, wears many hats. He is a USCG Merchant Marine Officer, Master 100 Ton Power or Sail, who fell in love with Kaua’i after visiting from Maryland in the 1970s. He completely remodeled the Boat House (circa 1925) in 2018, making it into the quaint and cozy beach cottage it is today. Gary has enjoyed hundreds of hours windsurfing, sailing, and kiteboarding in the waters just feet from Anini Boat House.
Although the exact age of the boat house is unknown, the Kaua’i County tax office has a drawing of the floor plan from 1928. The home is built mostly of redwood from the Pacific Northwest.
To the left of the Boat House was an old home known as Wades Glass House. The surf break just outside the offshore reef is called “glass house” due to its location in front of the glass-fronted home. The owner of Wades Glass House hired Gary to tear down the decaying structure in 2005 and build the new house, now known as Wade House. Gary remolded the old home on the opposite, right side of the Boat House in 2017 and enjoyed it as his primary residence for several years.
Ancient Hawaiians once lived all along Anini Beach, accessing water from streams. As recently as the late 1970s, the houses along this stretch of beach still accessed water from a nearby stream. There are varying explanations for the name of the beach. One account contends that the original name was “Wanini” Beach, and the name was changed when the “W” was accidentally left off the sign when it was replaced. According to the 1986 University of Hawaii Press Hawaiian Dictionary, “Anini” means:  1. Dwarfish, stunted, tiny. Rare.  2. To vary, as great and small waves. Rare. The word “Wanini” is not listed in that dictionary.
