About this property

What-A-View Cottage Halls Gap

Summary:

Watch the morning light illuminate the Pinnacle through the lounge window while a kookaburra calls before the kettle has boiled. What-A-View Cottage has had a whole new lease of life breathed into it by its current owner — one of Halls Gap's older homes, lovingly modernised by a carpenter into the clean lines and comfortable base that it is today. This two-bedroom retreat is your own little corner of Gariwerd — a light, airy escape an 11-minute walk from town cafés and local trailheads. Two quiet bedrooms wait at the end of the day, offering a relaxed base to slow down, disconnect, and watch the visiting birdlife.

The Space:

Watch the grey sandstone of the Pinnacle shift to warm gold, framed perfectly through the lounge window while you relax on the couch. This daily display is the heart of What-A-View Cottage, one of Halls Gap's older homes. Recently, a whole new lease of life has been breathed into the property by its current owner — a carpenter who has lovingly modernised the entire cottage from the studs out, creating the clean lines and exceptionally comfortable base that it is today.

Inside, the heavy internal walls and beams have been cleared away, turning the lounge, dining space, and kitchen into one shared, light and airy heart of the home. It is a space built for slow, connected afternoons — whether you are making a coffee or a pot of tea, gathering around the six-seat dining table for a long lunch, or listening to the breeze in the trees. The fully equipped kitchen features clean new benchtops, an induction cooktop, an oven, and a full-size fridge for simple, self-catered meals.

Both bedrooms lead directly off this central living area, keeping the layout intimate, warm, and highly practical. Bedroom one features a restful queen bed, while bedroom two is set up with a double bunk (featuring a single on top) plus a separate single bed. Both rooms are fitted with ceiling fans and heavy blackout curtains for deep, quiet sleep, and are finished with space-saving sliding doors that keep the rooms feeling airy. Just off the main zone, the rebuilt bathroom offers a deep bathtub and a step-in shower, while the separate laundry area houses the indoor toilet alongside a washer and dryer.

Step outside to a private courtyard and garden — your own little corner of Gariwerd, with room for a quiet coffee in the morning or dinner by the fire pit once the sun's gone. Cook dinner on the gas BBQ, share a bottle of wine at the outdoor dining table by the young apple tree, or gather around the fire pit under a clear night sky. Crimson rosellas work through the native trees and kookaburras call at dawn — a gentle reminder of the wild national park just beyond the fence.

Guest Access:

Settle in quickly with self-managed check-in from 3:00pm, using the secure key safe to the right of the front door. The access code arrives before you travel, letting you step inside What-A-View Cottage and unpack without any fuss. A covered carport provides dedicated parking for one vehicle, with space for a second vehicle parked directly behind it.

The Neighborhood:

Step out the front door and find yourself an 11-minute walk (800m) from local cafés, the general store, and the pub in the centre of Halls Gap. Positioned on a quiet residential street, What-A-View Cottage acts as your direct launchpad to regional walks and trailheads. Venus Baths and the Chautauqua Peak walking tracks both begin nearby in the heart of town, while the broader trailheads of Grampians National Park are only a ten-minute drive from the driveway.

Getting Around:

Enjoy the scenic three-hour drive from Melbourne via the Western Highway, which serves as the easiest way to reach the Grampians region. While a car is essential for exploring the lookouts of Grampians National Park, local transport services include a daily bus service which connects Halls Gap to train lines at Stawell, Ararat, Ballarat and Warrnambool, arriving at the Information Centre on Grampians Road. For a more active pace, local e-bike hire is available in town o bring the bush bikes to enjoy the shared footpath through town.

Other Things to Note:

Unwind in the presence of local wildlife, watching the kangaroos, emus, and native birds that frequently visit the garden. To ensure your stay at What-A-View Cottage aligns perfectly with your group's needs, please note the following before completing your booking:

Layout & Steps: The cottage is positioned on an elevated block to maximise its valley views, which means there are three external steps up to the front deck, a small step at the entry, and a few internal steps up to the toilet off the laundry. Because of these layout features and entry steps, the home is not suited to wheelchairs or mobility scooters.

Pets: The property is not pet-friendly. Registered assistance animals are always warmly welcomed.

Interaction with Guests:

Enjoy peace of mind knowing your hosts are locals who live nearby and are always on hand to support your stay. Jenny and Ian manage What-A-View Cottage directly and can assist with regional trail recommendations, local secrets, or any prompt maintenance needs. Self check-in lets you arrive at your own pace after 3:00pm, while your hosts remain just a quick call or message away.
