Tucked away in a quiet corner of the lake, Claytor Lake Hideaway sits on a small bluff overlooking the water. Early risers can enjoy the sunrise from the double-decker dock, while night owls will enjoy the cozy fire pit beside the house. Enjoy the lake views while relaxing or dining on the screened-in back porch. You’re only 10 minutes from the interstate, but, as the name implies, you’ll feel like you’re deep in the woods.
Stay a week and explore the New River Valley - you're only 15 minutes to access on the 55 mile scenic New River Trail (biking and hiking trail), 15 minutes to the Draper Village (restaurant, tea room, eclectic shopping, bike rentals, massage therapy, agritourism), 25 minutes to Foster Falls State Park (horseback riding, kayak/canoe access) and 15 minutes to Claytor Lake State Park (beach area, motorized boat rentals, easy hiking trails).
Virginia Tech is 35 min away, while Radford University is 25 min away.
Some notes: - Parking: The driveway can accommodate four vehicles. If you have more, let us know and we can advise. Boat trailer parking will work if you don't have too many other cars. Drive is not suitable for turn-arounds with a trailer. Here's a video of the driveway (just copy the link & paste into browser): https://youtu.be/gJb2z-Lj8tU - Internet: Internet choices are limited due to the location. The house has a Verizon mobile jet pack hotspot. The cell signal varies day-to-day (ie, one day you might be able to stream a movie, and the next day not; speeds range from 10Mbps - 25+Mbps). - Accessibility: The house is very accessible for those with mobility impairments, the dock however, is not. As you’ll see in the pictures, the house sits atop a steep hill overlooking the lake. The dock is reached via a staircase with 65 steps (see the video in the Photos section to watch the descent/ascent...it's really not that bad!). :-)

House is a great option for out of town guests. It was well equipped with extra blankets, basic cooking supplies, a few kids toys. It worked well for our small family. Keep in mind, you are in the woods, so the normal things that accompany that are there. Don’t be surprised with a few bug friends, limited cell signal and a windy road back to the house. But these things didn’t bother us as we expected it.
The property was perfect for what we needed, in town to visit friends and Radford University. The place was pet friendly, a detail that I overlooked unfortunately, as I am not a pet friending vacation home person. But other than that, all was great, the deck and dock area was beautiful and peaceful. Owners were very responsive and helpful.
The lake house was perfect for our Hokie’s graduation The house was cozy and clean. We spent so much time in the screened in porch because we were sheltered from the rain on a few days. We rented a pontoon and were able to use the dock. We had our lunch on the lower sundeck (lots of steps, but worth it). Sherry was quick to respond to all my questions and had many helpful suggestions. I only wish we had discovered the Lakehouse sooner! A great place for relaxing!
The home was very comfortable as were the beds! Great location w a wonderful screened-in porch. Water views and a double decker dock. The stairs down were easy but this out of shape girl had a hard time on the way back up. Great spot for fishing or just taking in the view. Definitely recommend for those wanting to unplug but have the comforts of home.

We had a very pleasant stay in this secluded cabin . Sherry is very quick with responses & answered all our queries before & during the stay readily . The floating deck was our most favorite place . The view is very serene & beautiful .Only thing we wished better were the linens provided & definitely cleaner crockery. An addition of hot tub may be:-) The cabin just needs a little pick me up here & there . But its worth a place to come back again !
Thank you Sherry for all your help .

So glad you enjoyed your stay - it was a pleasure to host your visit. And thank you for the constructive feedback. We'll definitely do a deep clean of the cookware and ensure it stays that way in the future. And new linens are on order! I hadn't realized they were becoming worn, so I do appreciate your advising me. Since we stay there so infrequently ourselves, we don't always know what needs attention without feedback from our guests - so thank you again!
We enjoyed our stay at this property. The house was as pictured
and comfortable. The only item that was inaccurate was the amount of steps down to the dock. The picture shows what I would consider 2 flights of steps. In reality it was 4 to 5 flights that are not pictured. By the third day the effort of going down and up the steps discouraged us from fully utilizing the dock and outside seating area. The host was great with communicating an issue that was resolved prior to our arrival. As stated in the listing, the Wifi was very weak and we had almost no cell service until we were out on the road.

We're so glad you enjoyed your stay. I do apologize for the surprise regarding the steps. We thought the pictures accurately indicated the distance to the dock and water, but clearly that's not sufficient. We'll change the text description to ensure it's clear. Thank you for the feedback!
Listing description very accurate. Plenty of room for 2 adults, 3 kids and a large dog. We had an 18 ft bass boat and there were no issues, although it was tight to get it in and out of the driveway. Watch the supplied video from the host, it’s helpful. Having some info about nearby restaurants or fun things to do for a day out may be helpful. We found Winterfrost Farms Ride-a-Rescue Horse that was fun and was a good cause. Choose a trail ride length and no experience is needed. Only 30-35 minutes away. Only reason for the 4-stars is there were little maintenance things we had to take care of: light bulbs out and had to buy extra to replace them all, one trash bag for the week, and fyi the living room a/c freezes up and drips but that may have been due to the July humidity. Overall a great stay and we’d come back! Rave reviews from the kids!

Thx for the feedback, Michael. Glad your stay went well & that you'd consider coming back. There should have been some menus from local restaurants in the back of the Guesthouse notebook--sounds like they aren't there anymore. We'll correct that, as well as compile a list of nearby activities such as the Rescue Ride.
The housekeeping crew contacted us about the AC; it simply needed a refrigerant recharge, which we did the day after you left. If you'd contacted us, we could have fixed it during your stay. The housekeeping company who cleans after each guest is supposed to monitor the little things like burned out bulbs, leaving enough trash bags, etc. We'll make sure we mention this to them to help them improve. Thanks again, Michael!

This property had pros and cons and things we wished we had known beforehand. It took us over an hour to maneuver our small 16 ft boat into the drive. The coded box to retrieve the key had no instructions other than a code. A quick call to the owner resolved the issue. The furniture inside and out is well past their prime and not comfortable. The internet was non existent while we were there. The house was clean, just outdated. The kitchen was well stocked. There are 79 stairs to the dock. They have a hand rail and are very sturdy. The air conditioner in the living room and the fans in the bedroom did a good job in keeping the house cool during the day. The weather was beautiful!

Thank you for your feedback. We’re always trying to improve our guests’ experience thus feedback is always welcome. Allow me to address your concerns one by one:
We’re sorry you had trouble maneuvering your boat trailer into the drive. Rarely do guests bring a boat to the house… most rent one from a local provider (who brings it directly to the dock) or take their own boat directly to the boat launch which is just a couple of miles away. When past guests have needed to bring a boat to the house, they’ve inquired about the road/driveway ahead of time which allowed us to work with them (send pictures and a short video), to determine if the space is suitable for their particular situation.
Thank you for the feedback regarding the coded keybox. Though not a common problem, we’ve added a laminated card above the box itself describing its operation and we’ve included a description of the operation in the info we send to guests before their arrival.
Regarding the furniture, this is the first time we’ve heard concerns about the furniture, so we were surprised to hear this. (Prospective guests can confirm this by reviewing past guest comments.) We might point out it’s a cabin, in the woods, by a lake, in a rustic setting—it’s not the Ritz.😊 As you pointed out, it’s got many modern conveniences—fully-stocked kitchen w/ a full-size fridge, microwave, dishwasher, oven, gas grill, full-size washer & dryer, A/C, flat-screen TV w/ DISH satellite service, and WiFi. And, since your stay, we’ve added two additional mini-split A/C units, one each, in the two main bedrooms.
Speaking of WiFi, because the cabin is located in a rural setting, there aren’t many options for Internet. We use a Verizon-powered internet system which usually ranges from 15Mbps – 25Mbps. On good days, the signal is fast enough to stream a movie. On bad days (overcast), the speed is slower. This is explained in the house description. In the past, we’ve had the occasional guest call saying the Internet was “off”. In one case, the router had become unplugged, while in the other the router had gone into ‘sleep’ mode and was easily reactivated once they pressed the ON button. Either of these sounds like what happened during your stay. If you had called us, we could’ve helped you resolve the issue.
Finally, some might consider it a moderate trek to the dock (65 steps to the upper level containing the seating area, 79 to the lower, water level). We thought we had adequately explained this in the house description & pictures, but based on your feedback, we’ve updated the description and added a short video I took while climbing down and then back up the stairs.
Again, we thank you for your feedback. As you can see, it has helped us make some improvements which should benefit future guests.
Although we rented this property because my daughter was graduated college, I would most definitely return! The house was beautiful and comfortable! The porch and dock were my favorite places! Despite the number of stairs down to the dock, it was worth every step!!! I want to go back when it is warmer and I can rent a boat!!! The owners were wonderful to deal with!!
Great spot for a little get away. Close to town yet you feel like your far enough away for relaxation. Wonderful dock and lake views. Amenities are average and we had what we needed.
Really enjoyed dock and location on lake. Also like listing says convenient to others attraction and Walmart also 10 minutes away. Kitchen was very well stocked and plenty of towels.
Beds were a little soft and was a little sad to only have one air conditioning unit in main area. Not bedrooms . Nights do usually cool off and host was super responsive and helpful. Would go back.
Beautiful property. Skylights leaked especially one in bedroom. Could have used air in BR
Enjoyed our stay. Showers could use an upgrade and belt on dryer squeaked terrible. Everything else was awesome!

So glad you enjoyed your stay. And thank you for the feedback... Both the shower heads and the washer/dryer are scheduled for replacement as soon as the summer season ends... Hope you can visit again!
My family and I had a wonderful time in early July. The water was great and the top deck was fantastic and the screened in porch was great although I don’t recall any bugs/insects. The bunks were great for kids and two full size bedrooms and the two bathrooms were sizable. Kitchen was well stocked with pans/pots etc. great stay
