About this property
Beautifully Restored, Secluded Farmhouse
Tucked away on private lane and bordering hundreds of acres of preserved land, this tastefully renovated 1840 farmhouse offers a perfect country escape with all the best Columbia County has to offer. This 4-bedroom, 3-bathroom home sleeps up to 6 people (yet works just as well for one or two people), is loaded with character, and features original pine floors and trim, new bathrooms with dinner-plate-sized shower heads and marble floors, and a kitchen featuring Viking/Sub Zero/Bosch appliances, with designer furnishings/decor and high-speed internet.
The interior of the home is modern, understated and unexpectedly luxurious. This is our weekend home and we renovated it to have a quiet escape for ourselves, outfitting it with finishes, furniture and objects that we enjoy. We are opening it up for rent after having shared it with friends and family and hope to find others who love it as much as we do. The kitchen is outfitted with everything you would ever need for a chef to cook a meal, including Jura and Ascaso espresso machines, Calphalon/Staub pots and pans, good wine glasses/dishes/flatware/bar accoutrements, etc.
The ground floor has 9’ ceilings and contains a large Living Room with a decorative fireplace (not for use) and TV, dining room, a 3-season screened-in porch (storm windows for the winter months), a large mudroom with LG washer and dryer, country kitchen and dinette, foyer, one bedroom, a full bathroom, and a 700-square foot bluestone terrace with teak furniture outside. Three additional bedrooms and two recently renovated bathrooms occupy the second floor.
While well-behaved children and pets are welcome, this is not a party house. It’s the ideal place to escape to the country with a screened in porch, a good bathtub and light-filled rooms with high quality mattresses, too many coffee table books and designer furniture. There are also premium mattresses, high quality linens and towels and every type of pillow option imaginable.
Location: Located on a tree-lined, quiet country road, just east of the Taconic, it’s a 20-minute drive to Hudson (Amtrak stop) and 30-minutes to Great Barrington, in the hills of NW Hillsdale, and a five-minute drive to the famed Hawthorne Valley Farm Store. It’s a 2 hour drive to NYC and 2h 15 min drive to Boston. The house is nestled above a small stream with a separate garage space from the main driveway, allowing for tons of natural light, open fields and privacy. We have one neighbor with hundreds of acres of property, so the home is reached at the end of a private road.
Kitchen: Sub Zero refrigerator, Viking Range, Bosch dishwasher, high quality pans and dishware, along with every cooking device, type of serve ware and appliance you could imagine, i.e. a citrus juicer, blenders, Dualit toaster, custom pizza stone for the oven, etc. For example, we are coffee fanatics, so we have a Chemix pour over, a French press, an Ascaso espresso machine, a Jura coffee/espresso machine, a Japanese kettle and iced coffee maker -- we like options! It’s these details that make staying at the home an enjoyable experience.
Mudroom: slate floors with an LG Washer and Dryer, sink and a great space to store everything, along with anything you could want for the property: snow shoes, candles, bug spray, board games, Rowenta iron, raclette machine, air fryer, etc.
Terrace: Recently built a 700 square foot blue stone terrace with Barlow Tyrie teak furniture (table and living space) and gas Weber grill. We also have a great charcoal grill if you prefer to cook with that. We just added a Yukon SoloStove fire place for the terrace that's really easy to use and does not leave you smelling of smoke. During the spring and summer, we spend most of our time on the screened-in porch that has three sun exposures and is fully weather protected (it’s enclosed with storm windows for Fall/Winter).
4 Bedrooms: 1. Primary Bedroom: King-size bed with master bathroom (2 people) – upstairs. Incredible mattress, good linens and lots of pillow options. 2. Guest Bedroom 1: queen-size bed (2 people) – upstairs. Same mattress as primary bedroom. 3. Guest Bedroom 2: XL Twin Donald Judd-style bed (1 person) – upstairs. Great mattress, Parachute linens 4. Guest Bedroom/Office 3: currently used as an office with a CB2 daybed (ideal 1 person, but turns into a queen bed that can sleep 2 people comfortably with the featherbed, if need be, sleeping up to 7 people for the home, but we really prefer 6 people max, and do not recommend a couple sleeping in that room; it’s not as nice an experience as the others) - ground floor
3 Bathrooms: 1. Master Bathroom: freestanding soaking tub; huge shower with dinner plate-sized rainfall shower head, standard shower head and jets for the wall; marble floors, shiplap walls, glass dividers, heat lamp and freestanding sink, Restoration Hardware fittings. 2. 2nd Floor Hall guest bath. Recently renovated, huge shower with dinner plate-sized rainfall shower and standard shower heads, vintage sink and nice chrome RH hardware. 3. Ground floor full bathroom is more standard, but the shower gets excellent water pressure (Speakman showerhead).
Technology: We have high speed fiber optic internet (500 Mbps) and a cell phone extender, which allows us to watch Netflix, make cellular phone calls and take Zoom/video conference calls for work purposes with ease. 55” LG LED TV, Bose Bluetooth speaker, charging stations, etc., are on site.
Miscellaneous: • We have an incredible caretaker who cleans the home and manages anything associated with it, should you need anything during the stay, including snow removal and lawn care. • We have individual a/c units for the main rooms and bedrooms for the summer months. • The fireplace finicky and easily back drafts into the living room, which can easily fill with smoke, so we are not allowing it for use during the stay; we are rebuilding that in the spring. If you would like a fire, we have a SoloStove on the terrace that works perfectly for outdoor fires. • We ask you to be mindful of water usage.
We have only recently started renting the space, since we will not be able to spend as much time there as we would like. Please message me if you have any questions or would like to see additional photos. This is a really special home and is perfectly located with great attractions in every direction.

Enjoyed everything: field and road for strolling, upscale amenities, location in beautiful HRV, and most of all the helpful and informative host, Bill. Hope to revisit soon!
The home was charming. However, the “bedroom” with the futon is not really a bedroom for two unless you want to crawl over each other. The upstairs is lovely. Our host provided clear instructions.

Thank you for your feedback and for staying with us. I do note clearly in the listing that the fourth bedroom features a CB2 day bed (not a traditional bed). While it can accommodate two people, and we offer an additional feather bed to improve that, it’s best suited for one person for the most comfortable experience. I’m glad you enjoyed the upstairs space and found our instructions clear.
Beautiful home in the country. Clean, fantastic contemporary decor, and very attentive and communicative host. Very comfortable beds, amazing coffee maker, great kitchen. Would definitely stay again. Thank you!
My family and I really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful and relaxing home. Bill ensures that his home has all the comforts of home and and he was easy to communicate with. The location is convenient too, approximately 20 minutes from Catamount and about 30 minutes from Great Barrington. Thanks Bill for your hospitality!
We had a wonderful week in William’s home exploring the Hudson Vally. The house is lovely and clean and the beds and bedding is so comfortable. We loved the bathrooms and all of the nice soaps, etc that William leaves for guests. The kitchen is fully stocked and is a coffee lovers dream. There is a nice screened in porch where we spent a lot of time. The location of the house was perfect for us to visit so many little towns in the area. Williams list of things to do and places to eat was also very helpful! Peaceful walks are right outside the front door! Another plus; William was always very responsive to our questions.
The area, location and open space were great. Located right off the Taconic, but not affected by noise or traffic in any way. Very much upscale, generous property with all of the amenities you could want. The host was considerate and fabulous, even weathered a local power outage! The premium bottle of red wine helped. We especially enjoyed the grounds, walking paths, outdoor patio, and a very breezy screened in porch. The owner was in the midst of adding a swimming pool and doing some additional upgrades. We would definitely return next year. Thank you Bill.
My husband and I were thrilled to be able to stay in this gracious, spare no expense, restored home for the weekend. The decor and and art work create a soft, relaxing environment to come back to after a day's activities in the beautiful Hudson area. The kitchen is well stocked with many extra things that you might not expect (all those coffeemakers!!). The master bed (it was just the two of us) was super comfortable and the bathrooms are state of the art. The upper part of the property has a nicely mowed path to walk the dog and the house sits on a dead end street that is very quiet and serene. Even though Bill was traveling abroad he was very much in touch in case we needed anything. We would love to go back sometime during colder weather to experience it again. The location is also close to Tanglewood and many other area activities, making it a great destination. We loved it!
Between the beautiful home and truly amazing hospitality of the host (Bill), I couldn't have possibly had a better stay. I was looking for a quiet stay away from the city to find peace and solitude to complete a writing project and this was just what the doctor ordered.
The home is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. The area is so quiet you can hear the water flowing in the stream across the street. This phenomenal property left me wanting for nothing, but if I did have a question, the gracious host was a simple call/text away.
As perfect as my stay was seeking serenity during my time alone, I definitely foresee coming back with my wife and son in the future. It's a great chance to escape the noise of the city and commune with nature.
I couldn't possibly overstate how amazing this home, its owner, and the sublime surroundings are. Five stars are NOT enough.
We had the most wonderful time in the country. The home is super cosy, filled with absolutely everything one may need. It’s on a quiet dirt road surrounded by field and stream views. We had our two dogs with us as well and they loved running around outside. I look forward to coming back!
Beautiful place to stay with exquisite bedrooms and bathrooms. Bill was a great host, and the house had everything we needed. Lovely and remote part of Hillsdale.
Lovely country home in a quite part of New York State
Very warm and well decorated, pet friendly and comfortable home in the country. The owners were very helpful and responsive. Close to many great restaurants, great cycling and hiking trails in the area. We would book again.
This conveniently located and thoughtfully updated home sits across a vibrant natural setting replete with evening fireflies. Butterflies and moths make the woods surrounding the spacious stone patio hum with motion and tanagers occasionally allowed themselves to be viewed on quiet Walden Road. Close to the attractions of Lenox, MA and the Catskills, this place is a great escape. Bill could not have been more responsive to our questions and requests. Enjoy!
This property offers plenty of space and amenities. We ate well, slept well, and enjoyed family time. Lots of places to explore in the area. Very enjoyable!!
We had an incredible stay here and highly recommend this house to anyone considering it. The host, Bill, was above and beyond friendly upon our arrival, and showed us how to use some of his top-quality kitchen appliances. He also responded immediately to any messages and questions we had. The decor was exquisite, yet homey - we felt as if we were staying in the clean but lived-in home of a professional interior designer. The house was also filled with impeccable appliances, furniture, and home goods, and contained everything we could need (we took lots of pics and notes to seek some of these out for our respective homes). The setting is peaceful and serene with some deer visits to the backyard. We go away every year, and this is the first house we would all return to in a heartbeat.
My husband and two grown children enjoyed our stay in this renovated farmhouse. House as pictured in photos. Communication with owner and caretaker excellent. Located well - close to Hudson, Copake Lake and other areas of the Berkshires.
my family stayed for spring break. The home and the owner were both wonderful. A true cooks kitchen allowed my daughter and I to bake and make gumbo! My husband was happy with the large 4g TV and was comfortable relaxing in the living room. It was a little to cold to explore the grounds, but the house was a perfect retreat from the cold. I would highly recommend.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautifully renovated farmhouse. Bill is a terrific host who met us at the house for check in to make sure we had everything we needed. The house is comfortable and modern, the kitchen very well equipped with everything we needed, and the location was perfect. We hope to come back and enjoy this home again.
My family had a lovely stay at Bill's home. Bill was a wonderful host - very communicative and responsive. The house was warm and inviting and had everything we could need. I highly recommend this location for your next trip!

Why they chose this property
This part of Columbia County is truly special. You have the cultural and culinary attractions of Hudson and the neighboring hamlets in every direction, but you're sequestered away in your own world (you go to sleep with the sound of coyotes and owls, and wake up to a cacophony of birds chirping), yet you're only a mile away from a great grocery store with better pastries than I could make, and it's all only 2 hours from NYC. We searched for four years before buying this house, and are in a (never-ending) process of restoration, but this home nicely balances character with convenience, and offers the perfect weekend escape - it's geared more toward the design-oriented person who appreciates the details. We bought it from the previous owner, who owned it for fifty years, and basically had to rebuild most of the house (lots of non-sexy spend on rewiring, restoring and getting the space to function again), but it's a labor of love.
What makes this property unique
This is my partner's and my weekend home and it's filled with nice objects and art. We are only testing renting it out of sheer guilt because we are not able to spend as much time here as we would like, however, we want the home to go to good use when we are not present. We simply ask that you care for the place as if it were your own. We are not interested in price gouging people, but want others who will enjoy it with their families and friends; it's such a nice respite from the city.
We've always found that the best houses we have rented offered great quality details, such as nice linens and towels, good soap, magazines and books, comfortable throws, etc; this home is filled with all of these great details. For the design-oriented person who appreciates thin crystal glasses and nice furniture, this is the home for you. Feel free to drink some of the liquor and incorporate the good vermouth when mixing a cocktail, use the good soap and light the Diptyque candles, but just do so in a thoughtful way without emptying everything out; this way we can continue to provide a nice experience to all. We could remove all of these details, but that's what makes the experience.
