About this property

Log Home, secluded on a creek

A custom crafted log home offers comfort in every season of the year. Our property consists of thirty-two acres of wildflowers, pine trees, and rocky ridges, surrounded by National Forest providing hiking in the meandering valley of French Creek.

Our home includes two bedrooms on the main floor, two on the lower level (a walk-out basement) and a large loft with five single beds. There is a full bath on each floor. The Great Room, which has a stunning rock fireplace as a focal point, flows into a dining room and kitchen area, A long covered porch covers the full length of the house, and a large open deck looks down a long valley. Beautiful lawn surrounds the cabin, with a path down to French Creek which flows by the cabin. There is a firepit for evening campfires, a tree-house with swing, and equipment for Ladderball, Cornhole, and other family games. A softball field also serves as an area for Frisbee and other activities.

Great place to hop on trails
We stayed here since it was close to trails to ride our side by sides. The place was secluded from others, and we had lots of room to play games and hang out. The house had everything we needed for our group of 9. Would stay here again!

Beautiful cabin in the hills, perfect for families or groups.
A beautiful property tucked away in the hills out of town. Very secluded and private, with a ton of games and things to do on-site for families. Close to all of the fire roads and trails for those who want to ride off-road vehicles in the black hills. Has everything you need to cook, clean & just sit back and relax (But no TVs!) Hosts were very good with communication and my entire group was very happy with the property. Thank you again!!

Beautifully perfect cabin
Just wanna start with wow! Are stay was perfect. The cabin was perfect, the host was wonderful. If you’re looking for a place to stay with or without the family and want that homey feel, this is it. Front porch sitting, no traffic, spectacular view, kids could run free outside with no worries. They had enough toys to playground equipment, they were never bored. The house was fully supplied with kitchen appliances for home cooking instead going out every night. Anything we forgot we found it there, and the grocery store was only a small drive away if need be. We all enjoyed are stay and would definitely recommend it again and to others.

Secluded and Beautiful
Great property. It was clean and plenty to do off the grid. There is WiFi, but no TVs as it is designed to be more of a way to reconnect with your family. We had a great time playing board games and enjoying the outdoors. The creek is close by but we thought it would have been easier to access and maybe a bit bigger than it really was. Host was very attentive as well.

Home Away from Home
We are traveling with Young adult Children, but this cabin is equipped to handle varying family sizes and ages. We found everything we needed and it felt very welcoming, like you were home. The kitchen was stocked with everything you could need to prepare meals with plenty of dishes and silverware. We were away from the cabin most of the time we were in town, but there was so much to do on site, if you plan some down time while visiting, you will be glad you did. Everything was great and we would definitley recommend or stay again.

Quiet Spacious Cabin
Nestled up the hills, the property is peaceful and beautiful! We came to go side-by-siding and there was plenty of parking for our three trucks and trailers (and room for another one or two) with easy and quick access to the trails. 4 bedrooms plus loft, plenty of sleeping space for large groups. Jeff responded to messages in a timely manner, was accomodating, and just down right wonderful to work with! Our group is hopeful to stay here again!

Wonderfully Secluded Rental
The location and seclusion of the rental was absolutely wonderful. We were only 15 minutes from Custer and a short drive to various attractions. The area is beautiful and we all appreciated the privacy. The rental was very generously stocked with plenty of towels, blankets, games, kitchen items and anything else you can think of. The kids enjoyed playing catch and we had a very fun family baseball game. The property is surrounded by a National Forest providing wonderful hiking opportunities. The beds were very comfortable and we all slept like babies. I would absolutely rent again!

great cabin retreat in the Black Hills!
The property and cabin are a great location for a retreat or to use as a home base for exploration in the Black Hills. We had a great time and everything was as expected. The host was an excellent communicator. During our stay, we didn't get to spend as much time about the property as we planned because of great weather and all the cool things to do in the Black Hills. We wished we had more time!

All of our group of 4 couples really liked our stay. Setting on the deck in the evenings watching the wildlife come out was a highlight. The location is AWESOME as none of us like crowds and next door neighbors hootin n hollering all night. Would we stay again? YES, In a heartbeat. Jeff, send me your email or a text message, I have a photo or two to share with you,

Relaxing, comfortable, secluded cabin
This cabin was a great getaway for our whole, multigenerational family to create some priceless memories. It was a great secluded location surrounded by the beauty of the black hills. The cabin offered many amenities and nothing was left unthought of by the owners. We enjoyed a day just hanging out and relaxing at the cabin playing games, hiking, and exploring the area on atvs. It is also located close to the town of Custer and Custer State Park that we could venture there all day to come back to a relaxing evening at the cabin. Thank you for sharing your beautiful cabin with us!

Amazing place to stay!
The property owners call it a retreat and that is absolutely true. The log cabin is in a valley surrounded by the mountains. My favorite part was sitting on the deck in the morning listening to the breeze in the trees and the water in the creek below. Plenty of games and things to do for the kids. We have 6 kids ages 16 thru 2 and they all had so much fun. They loved exploring and enjoying the land. It’s close to all the major attractions but most importantly, it’s simply beautiful. This is a busy, noisy world we live in. This place will offer peace and solitude in the beauty of the nature around.

Beautiful Setting!!
Jeff and family were such wonderful hosts! The cabin was more than what we thought, more than enough room for 7, gorgeous views from the porch, every amenity you can think of, French Creek right by the cabin, activities for the kids.... it was great! Can't wait to come back again! Jeff has been a great communicator thru the whole process and it made our stay even better! Cheers from Colorado!!

South Dakota Adventure
Each year my best friend and I meet somewhere for a week to reconnect, unwind, and recharge for the rest of the year. This year we chose South Dakota to explore Badlands NP, Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and other nearby activities. It was a wonderful time and frankly, another two or three days would have been ideal. I chose this property for the solitude, the beauty of the area and its’ proximity to many of the above mentioned sites. We were not disappointed! The home is FULLY STOCKED! I mean from spices to toilet paper, we had everything we needed to feel “at home”. That is exactly how we felt, the home is very well cared for and loved, which is evident from the moment you enter the home. The property is ideal for a family or even a reunion, as there are four bedrooms, and a sleeping loft that has 6 twin beds. There are two bathrooms and a full sized washer and dryer. We spent a lot of time outside in the evenings, listening to the creek. We actually cut a couple of things out of our itinerary so we could spend a full day at the cabin. We were greeted by chipmunks and squirrels daily, many birds and even a group of antelope one morning. I encourage you to consider this property if you are looking to really enjoy the area as a local and not a tourist. The cabin is about 3 miles off the main highway, so it’s about a 10 minute drive on gravel roads to arrive. I appreciate this as I live in an urban area now. Rent this home you won’t regret it!

A Beautiful and Peaceful Retreat
I came here with my husband, sister and brother and their spouses. We did not know what to expect on the drive in. But what we saw was breathtaking. The cabin looks like a hallmark card. It was just perfect for the six of us. The beauty of the Aspen trees and forest around the cabin was breathtaking. My sister-in-law is a southern girl and has been in Florida for the past 30 years. She told me she never thought she could leave Florida but this cabin and all its beauty might have changed that. Thank you for stocking it better than any other VRBO I have been in. Everything we could possibly have wanted ( other than the food we ate ) was provided for us. We had a beautiful experience staying the cabin in the woods. Also its location is perfect for all of things to do and see in the Black Hills .

About the host

Hosted by JRL Retreat

Host profile image
We are three couples—two sisters, a brother, and our spouses—who enjoy the bond of family and friendship. Some of us grew up in the Black Hills; it has been a special area for all of us. As “the changes and chances of life” took us to various parts of the country over the years, we all thought of the Black Hills as “coming home,” so in 1986 we agreed to turn a dream into reality, and purchased what we have come to call JRL Retreat. It has worked well to share it among (now) three generations of our families—and we love sharing it with others.

Why they chose this property

Once you turn off the road, the surrounding National Forest offers complete seclusion. From the cabin deck, the view is valley in one direction, valley in the other, the creek down below, and “Rubble Rock Mountain” behind. The North Fork and the South Fork of historic French Creek come together on this land, forming a junction that opens onto beautiful hikes up the valley of either fork. Rising above the creek valley are pine-covered hillsides and rugged rock ridges.

What makes this property unique

The Southern Black Hills has a climate sometimes described as the “Banana Belt,” and JRL Retreat, at 6,000 feet elevation, is usually ten degrees cooler in the summer, and ten degrees warmer in the winter, than the nearby South Dakota plains. There are wonderful attractions less than an hour in any direction from the cabin, but—with a creek, a mountain, and a modern log cabin—you don’t have to go anywhere!

In the summer the days are warm; nights are cool. And there is very low humidity.
