About this property
Home on Benefit Street minutes from Brown, RISD, downtown
Originally built in 1760 on North Main Street and moved in 1805 to its present location on Benefit Street, this is a treasured home along Benefit Street’s “Mile of History.” The exterior of the home has Greek Revival details while the interior boasts wide plank pine wood floors from 1760, five original fireplaces with stunning craftsmanship, and distinctive curved walls in the living room facing Benefit Street. The custom kitchen leads to a western-facing deck with breathtaking views of the Rhode Island State House and downtown Providence. The deck has two heaters for year-round use. The second floor is dedicated to the primary suite with a spacious primary bedroom, a gorgeous bath and shower, convenient laundry, and an office space that overlooks the State House. The third floor has two bedrooms and another full bathroom. The finished basement contains a Peloton and weights, a queen sleeper sofa, a full bathroom in the unfinished area, and a door that leads to the patio and perennial garden designed by a famous RISD landscape architect. The private garden, tiered water fountain, and comfortable outdoor seating below the deck offer a relaxing atmosphere amid the surrounding city.
This house is on the National Registry of Historic Properties, a Providence Preservation Society plaque house, and was featured in a cover story for Colonial Homes magazine.
This home has everything you need to enjoy your stay in Providence - a five minute walk to downtown, Brown, and RISD, speedy and reliable mesh wifi system, two Nest thermostats that control the two zone heating/central air conditioning system, and a Yale remote lock on two doors for easy access and 24-hour check-in. The house has two televisions (60 and 55 inch) with Roku, Chromecast, Netflix, Hulu, etc. There are two Bose speakers (one portable), two Harmon Kardon speakers (one portable), and another portable speaker for guest use.
One parking spot in the driveway and free street parking available.
It is within walking distance of downtown (.5 miles to WaterFire, .5 miles to Providence Place, .8 miles to Providence Performing Arts Center), Brown University (.5 miles), RISD (.4 miles), Whole Foods (.4 miles), Prospect Terrace Park (.3 miles) and Thayer Street (.8 miles). Also a short walk (.4 miles) to Providence Station (with easy access to/from NYC and to/from Boston - a 45 minute train ride to Boston), a 35-40 minute ride to Newport, Narragansett, and the beaches of Rhode Island, and 45 minutes to an hour to Cape Cod.
We absolutely love hosting guests and will be readily available to answer any questions you might have about the property before and during your stay. We know Providence and its surrounding areas (Newport, Boston, Cape Cod, etc.) quite well and would be more than happy to assist as you make plans for your visit to Providence. We're dedicated to providing guests with a wonderful experience at our home on Benefit Street!
*This is a three bedroom house with a queen sleeper sofa in the basement that can serve functionally as a fourth bedroom (there is a full bathroom in the basement). Also, you must pass through the second bedroom on the third floor to get to the third bedroom on the third floor*
*This home was built in 1760 and so has all of the charms and quirks of an 18th century home. Slanted floors and narrow stairs are a part of this museum-piece from 1760. If guests have mobility issues they might find the second to third floor stairwell particularly challenging. The pictures included here offer an accurate representation of those stairs, but we would be happy to answer any questions/provide more information upon request.*
