Less than 5 minutes from Valognes: Nicknamed the 'Little Versailles of Normandy' thanks to its numerous private mansions, this ancient Gallo-Roman city boasts a rich heritage, including the ruins of Roman baths. A city of art and history, it is home to museums, churches, and historic buildings. Located near Cherbourg, it is an ideal cultural stopover for exploring the Cotentin peninsula.
20 minutes from Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue: Voted France's Favorite Village in 2019, this picturesque port combines fishing and leisure activities. With approximately 700 berths, it boasts a strong oyster farming tradition in Normandy's largest oyster bed. Another major attraction is Tatihou Island, accessible by amphibious boat or on foot depending on the tide. This protected site features a bird sanctuary, a maritime museum, and a Vauban tower, all UNESCO World Heritage sites since 2008. Also worth visiting are the Sailors' Chapel, dedicated to sailors lost at sea, and the lively local market. Its coastal paths, notably the GR 223, offer beautiful walks between the sea and the bocage countryside.
25 minutes from Barfleur: Barfleur is a charming fishing port located at the northeastern tip of the Cotentin peninsula, in the Manche department. Classified as one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, it owes this title to its granite houses with schist roofs, its picturesque quays, and its authentic atmosphere. A former major ducal and Anglo-Norman port, Barfleur was the departure point for Duke William's conquest of England in 1066, as evidenced by a medallion on the port.
The village is renowned for its wild “Blonde de Barfleur” mussels, harvested from local beds, as well as for its shellfish and various fish fishing. Must-see sites: walks in the Cour Sainte-Catherine, a visit to the Saint-Nicolas church with its remarkable stained-glass windows, and a visit to the SNSM station, the oldest in France (founded in 1865).
30 minutes from the D-Day landing beaches: TheD-Day landing beaches, located on the Normandy coast, are the historic sites of June 6, 1944, the day of the Allied landings in France during World War II. Spread across Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword Beaches, they witnessed the arrival of thousands of soldiers who came to liberate Europe. Today, these beaches are essential memorial sites, with museums, military cemeteries, and landscapes imbued with emotion.
40 minutes from La Hague: La Hague, at the northwestern tip of the Cotentin peninsula, is a wild and unspoiled land, nicknamed the 'Little Ireland of Normandy.' Between vertiginous cliffs (Nez de Jobourg), coves, moors, and picturesque harbors like Port Racine, it offers breathtaking landscapes. Ideal for hiking (GR223), it also charms visitors with its cultural sites: the house of Jacques Prévert, the Manoir du Tourp, exotic gardens, and iconic lighthouses.
