The Villa's Story:
The garden is part of a very large ancient Rothschild family property, which until the early 20th century stretched over the eastern hills of the city of Grasse.
Alice de Rothschild (1847-1922) employed over 100 gardeners and began spending her winters on the French Riviera. In 1887, she bought 100 hectares of land among the perfume fields of Grasse and began building one of the most ostentatious and extravagant gardens ever seen.
It had many exotic plants, palm trees, cacti, aloes, etc., many of which are still in the villa's garden, as well as the water basin from the same period.
In April 1891, Queen Victoria visited Grasse, with the main reason for her visit being to see Alice de Rothschild's extensive gardens.
In accordance with British tradition, Queen Victoria was invited to plant a tree in the Rothschild gardens.
Napoleon also had his first meeting with Josephine, his first wife, in the garden where you will spend your wonderful vacation. That's why the property is named "La Pagerie", after Josephine's parents' plantation on the island of Martinique.
