About this property
6-bedroom Amish homestead with woods & pond offering fishing/boating
Have you ever wanted to stay in a genuine Amish home? Now you have your chance. This authentic Amish homestead features a six (6) bedroom home perched on a hill with a beautiful forest including maple, oak, and other hardwoods and rolling green pastures all around. A private spring-fed pond beyond the pastures nestled against the woods is a favorite family amenity with a dock one can fish from or just relax on, as well as a boat available to paddle around in. The spacious covered upper porch overlooking this legacy property and surrounding rolling hills is an idyllic spot to watch the sunset any time of year.
Depending on the season, you may find goats and sheep grazing in the pastures on this quintessential Amish property. And as we harvest the hayfield by horse drawn equipment, at certain times of year you may find the fields in view of the house being cut and put into hay bales. Guests are encouraged to spend time exploring the grounds, strolling around the pond, swinging on the hand-built Amish long-swing and swimming, fishing, boating or simply relaxing at the pond. At the house are generous spaces where one can relax in peace or congregate in groups, such as the front covered porch, the great room common area, or on the back patio.
Inside the house the level of amenities are intentional in order to provide a more authentic Amish lifestyle environment. We contemplated keeping everything exactly as it was built by an Amish family, but after careful consideration we chose to add only a few elements such as outlets for hairdryers, a mobile device charging station, coffee maker, and laundry machines. For the adventurous, the working clothesline is an excellent way to dry your clothes the Amish way. The custom lighting fixtures throughout the house were specifically designed to precisely mimic the gas lights in a typical Amish house. Due to the extreme fire risk for most people unfamiliar with the proper operation of the gas lighting fixtures, we were obliged to modify them for our “English” guests.
Consequently, we installed a minimal amount of electric wiring to accommodate these changes, but take note of the scarcity of the wall outlets throughout. Normally there are no outlets in an Amish home, and for the truly brave we challenge you to set aside your mobile devices, including social media, entertainment and the news during part or all of your stay. As you might expect, there are no TVs, wifi, or other electronic entertainment equipment provided, as we feel that would detract from the legitimacy of your experience. The Amish generally retire for the night shortly after dark and are up at first light, unless of course there is a vigorous card / board game or puzzle activity going (provided). And who knows, you may find yourself choosing to adopt this healthy and invigorating routine! With the profound silence on this backcountry road, however, you may end up sleeping late as well!
The well-known towns of Sugarcreek, Walnut Creek and Berlin in the heart of Amish country are mere minutes away, and the backroads surrounding this country retreat feature many Amish farms and other properties similar to ours. Come for the peace and quiet and enjoy the simple life as a respite away from the city or the busyness of normal life, as well as a place just to unplug for an unforgettable stay experiencing a taste of the Amish way of life.
