Pura vida!

We couldn’t be happier with our stay at Down By the Sea with Heike and Hans as our welcoming hosts. The location is picturesque and is the perfect secluded beachfront hideaway where you can unplug. Very clean and we had everything we needed. We are already hoping to return soon.

Wonderful beach apartment

This beach spot is a little slice of heaven! Definitely recommend 4wd and some perseverance to reach the spot, but this is an incredible and relatively isolated beach spot. Hans and heike live upstairs of the apartment and were very friendly, helpful and accommodating. It’s a cute and simple little apartment with everything you need for a peaceful beach getaway.

Relax, don't worry - be happy

It's been one year already since my wife and I spent a few weeks away from our winter at this place. The view from the bed is picture postcard perfect: fifty yards of lawn, bordered by lush tropical plants and trees. Beyond that: a band of palm trees, a beach with golden sand and, in all its blue glory, the Pacific Ocean. The apartment is comfortable, has excellent beds and a roomy bathroom. As we spent most of our time outside (of course), our own private terrace was mostly used in the morning, when the sun was still behind the house. The terrace has a very comfortable set of chair and couch - perfect for hours of reading. In the afternoons, we moved to the beach, sat in the shadow of the palm trees (without risking our lives: the owners regularly have all coconuts chopped off) and regularly cooled off in the ocean, floating in the lazy surf. We didn't miss a kitchen: we could make coffee or tea in the apartment and we often drove the ten minutes to San Francisco de Coyote to have lunch in the excellent Café Santé and dinner at the open air restaurant Lomo Clara. All in all: a perfect place if you want to get away from it all (in our case: a dreary winter in Western Europe). If, however, you want night life, bars, hordes of other tourists and music that goes THUMP THUMP THUMP for half the night...... then this is not the place for you! The owners are friendly and left us alone, but were always happy to supply information about the area when asked for. Our fondest memories? Floating on our back in the ocean in the middle of the night under a full moon. And New Year's Eve, with locals and tourists eating and drinking around the bonfires on the beach. Pura Vida!

Stunning Beach Hideaway!

Hans and Hika Bakker are expats and gregarious, multilingual hosts. The bed and bath suite on the first floor of their home was small but very clean and tastefully decorated. The sliding door opened to a nice sitting area with chairs and a hammock. The walk to the beach through a palm grove was less than a hundred yards. The beach itself is incredible, several miles of fine sand, gentle slope, steady surf and good shell collection opportunities. Hika operates Cafe Senna in San Francisco, just up the road which is open for breakfast and lunch six days a week. The El Barco Restaurante & Bar is two miles down the road, also right on the beach, is a great spot for drinks and dinner. While the area is a bit remote, we will likely return for a longer stay, to enjoy the conviviality, the quiet and the susurrus of the surf.

Heaven Down by the Sea

A wonderful idyllic beach setting run by charming people we can’t wait to visit again. From miles of deserted gentle beach to freshly cut coconuts everything a beach lover could wish for . Sitting on the beach reading while the waves lapped around my feet . Amazing colours, and wildlife, shellfish, birds of prey - it’s sll there in abundance. Beautifully decorated guest rooms, some with direct beach access. It is remote and all the better got it. Don’t wait to visit if you adore true unspoilt beaches.

A slice of paradise Tico style

The apartment is more spacious than the pictures give it credit. The location was everything we wanted. We basically had the whole of playa coyote to ourselves! The beach was amazing in every way e.g. animals, sunsets, shells, water, privacy. The apartment was clean, there were many beach toys and games available. The beds were very comfortable. There was ample post beach showering and rinsing off facilities. Heike and Hans were available most of the time if required and gave us lots of privacy. It felt very safe there. The sugar and coffee could have been topped up by the maid. Also, the beach towels could have been changed. A small hob could be considered but there was a toaster, small fridge, coffee perculator and all the cutlery, plates etc you need. check in and out details were a little confusing but you can always contact cafe Santos if confused. There is also a slightly more expensive studio flat next door if you are thinking of staying with friends/family.

In our description, we do explicitly point out that our studio is particularly suitable for short stays since it has no kitchen. We did mention this before booking and offered you the apartment with a full kitchen instead. We do provide our guests with conveniences such as water bottles, coffee and sugar on arrival, which is a service which we offer but which should not be regarded as a matter of course. We are open to requests from our guests for things such as beach towels etc., (most of our guests do bring their own beach towels) and as you know we assist with organizing tours and laundry in our attempt to make your stay as perfect as possible. However, as we could see that these little things did not affect your holiday at all and we could see how you enjoyed your time here, we hope to welcome you again soon.

Unter Palmen, direkt am Strand

Wir wollten eigentlich nur 1 Nacht bleiben aber es hat uns so sehr gefallen das wir noch drei weitere Nächte geblieben sind. Auf unserem Weg nach Nosara haben wir zum Mittagessen im Café Santé in San Francisco de Coyote angehalten. Wir hatten nicht nur tolle Sandwiches sondern auch eine so nette Unterhaltung mit der Inhaberin Heike, dass wir total die Zeit vergessen haben. Das war unser Glück den so sind wir auf Down by the Sea gestoßen, das uns Heike angeboten hat. Das Studio ist mit so viel liebe zum Detail gemacht, die Farbgestaltung der Zimmer, die Deko aus Strandgut, so was von geschschmackvoll. Toll toll toll. Das Studio hat einen kleinen Kühlschrank und eine Kaffeemaschine so konnten wir uns unser Frühstück selber bereiten. Eine tolle Erfahrung für uns war natürlich, das wir direkt am Strand waren. Somit konnten wir gleich nach dem Aufstehen, einen Kaffee kochen und mit diesem zum Strand spazieren, wo wirklich keine Menschenseele zu sehen war. Herrlich. Den Tag haben wir unter dem Sonnenschirm auf bequemen Sonnenliegen am Strand verbracht. Zwischendurch rein etwas kühles Obst und Wasser geholt und dann einfach nur relaxed auf den Liegen das Meer genossen. Ab 17 Uhr haben wir uns unser kaltes Bier geschnappt und uns den farbenprächtigen Sonnenuntergang angeschaut. Einfach Klasse! Ne, das hat Klasse. Am Tag unserer Abreise (Samstag da hat das Cafe geschlossen), hat Heike uns zur Stärkung für unsere Weiterfahrt sogar noch jedem von uns einen richtig leckeren Cappuccino gemacht. Down by the Sea ist wirklich ein Geheimtip den wir absolut empehlen können und gerade denen ans Herz legen können, die Abstand von den lauten und überfüllten Touristenzentren suchen. Wir kommen wieder und bedanken uns ganz herzlich für die tolle Gastfreundschaft. Danke und auf bald, Pura Vida

Our area is far away from mass tourism and that is what we enjoy. We do not have a bar or restaurant next to the other, and we can not come up with Canopy or Quad rentals but we have small fine matched in nature Activities. You can rent kayaks and dive into the wild world of the mangrove, you can rent horses and ride to the waterfalls or on the beach, you can visit the butterfly farm and learn all about Costa Rican wildlife or the honey extraction, the production of coconut oils and other products of coconut oil. Explore how our macaws and our turtles protected by private organizations. All this you can learn and experience with us, here at Playa Coyote.
