About this property

Secluded Lakefront, Dog-Friendly Cabin with Canoe, 7 Miles from the Ocean

This newly renovated lakefront cabin is on 2 wooded acres with 250 feet of private frontage on the undeveloped end of quiet Six Mile Lake in the town of Marshfield. Excellent swimming and easy shore access for people and dogs, with a canoe for guests to use. The cabin is 600 square feet plus a loft, with large windows and skylights: plenty of natural light regardless of the weather. Situated 10 minutes from the larger town of Machias (pronounced Ma-CHAI-us), the cabin is convenient to a full-service supermarket, several hardware and outdoor supply stores, a handful of restaurants, a hospital with a 24-hour emergency room, and many small businesses. The original cabin was built in 1998 and was very rustic, with no running water or electricity, and recently underwent an expansion (bedroom and full bathroom) and extreme makeover. (Please note that all reviews through 2023 refer to the original cabin and not the renovated one). Photos of the original cabin appear toward the end of the photo gallery.

The cabin does not have a television or Internet or exterior lights of any kind in order to preserve the rustic feel and minimize light pollution. It usually receives a decent cell phone signal depending on your carrier, allowing you to use your phone as an Internet hotspot.

Dogs that like to swim really love this property, and the water access is very good. But please note the property is sloped, with many tree roots along the path between the cabin and the water, so it is not ideal for people or animals with mobility issues. (And please note -- in spite of the ramp pictured, the cabin is not handicap accessible. The ramp is there for older dogs and people that want to avoid steep stairs.)

The access road and our driveway are sand and gravel, and fairly well-maintained. A 4-wheel (or all-wheel) drive vehicle is helpful but not necessary during most times of the year.

For those looking for a quiet, secluded, dark-sky experience on the lake, the property will not disappoint.

Mid-June to mid-September: we normally have a 7-day minimum, Saturday to Saturday. (Exceptions may apply especially if there are gaps in booking dates.)

Other times of year: We usually have a 3-day minimum. Exceptions may apply.

Late fall through mid-December: we have a relaxed cancellation policy due to the possibility of a snowstorm that could make our road accessible only to high-clearance vehicles/4-wheel drives.

When you make a booking request, please add a brief note to let us know something about you and what draws you to our region of Maine.

Owners: Anne Golden and Nathan Neorr (rhymes with "more").
Anne is originally from Manchester, Maine, and Nathan is originally from Northern Michigan. Anne taught English as a Second Language at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, for 18 years after spending 3 years teaching English in Japan. Since 2016 she has worked for the Japan America Society of Greater Cincinnati as Executive Director. Nathan is a professional actor (stage, film, television, and radio) and carpenter. They live in Cincinnati with Sunnie, a Bernese Mountain Dog born in November 2023. They spend several weeks at their cabin each year and enjoy sharing it with like-minded people who appreciate Maine's beautiful and remote landscapes.

Why they chose this property

The North Coast region of Maine is often overlooked because it is remote and not as developed as other coastal areas to the south. We consider the area's remoteness a plus. There is very little traffic, noise, air or light pollution, and yet the region still offers everything one really needs in terms of supplies and essential services. Our end of the lake is quiet and relatively undeveloped. The use of powerboats on the lake is restricted, so it's very good for canoeing and kayaking. The fishing can be good in the spring and early summer.

What makes this property unique

The cabin is very private and is located at the north end of Six Mile Lake in the town of Marshfield, Maine, approximately 10 minutes from Machias (pop. 2,500). When you're there, you will see very few people outside of occasional kayakers. It's quiet and clean, completely free of air and light pollution. The star gazing is excellent.

There is excellent hiking along wooded, coastal trails approximately 30 minutes north of the cabin. This area is known as the "Bold Coast." It's relatively undeveloped and uncrowded, even in peak summer months. You can download a free map from a local non-profit organization (see address below).
