About this property

Enchanting Cottage, walk to Downtown Harpers Ferry

Summary:
Welcome to Waverly Cottage, hosted by Blue Maple!

An elegant 1840s Victorian with its own delightful history -- right in the heart of Historic Downtown! The perfect location for your Harpers Ferry stay.

The highlights:
- Just steps to downtown Harpers Ferry (we’re surrounded by the National Park!)
- Relax with a glass of wine on the private front or back porches
- Curl up with a book in the sunny sitting room
- Stream movies or take video calls on the fastest WiFi in the mountains

The Space:
Our cozy retreat has all the comforts of home, nestled right in the center of Historic Harpers Ferry. With its blend of historical charm and modern safety, this Victorian gem promises a memorable and comfortable stay, ensuring you experience both its unique character and modern conveniences in complete comfort. Waverly Cottage is ideal for couples, families, or small groups of friends -- and is the perfect home base for your getaway!

The cottage includes:
- 2 bedrooms, one with a queen bed and the other with two twin beds
- 1 full bathroom and the second one is a half bath (full bath located in the master bedroom, 1/2 bath is off the kitchen)
- Two additional pull-out beds, one in the living room (queen) and the other in the sitting room (twin)
- Cute front porch with a bench -- perfect for people watching :)
- Large elevated back porch with two comfy chairs and a bench to relax with a glass of wine
- Fully-stocked kitchen with a stove/oven and microwave
- Central AC and heat to keep you comfortable (please note the AC is currently out of service, but repairs are in the works)
- SmartTV with access to all your favorite streaming services
- Fast, reliable WiFi that’s more than enough to stream movies and hold video calls
- Parking directly in front of the cottage (2 parking passes for your stay)

Much of this Victorian Gem is in its original form and has been lovingly maintained over the last 165 years, from the original 1840s foundation, to the one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted porch trim, gable shingles, and hardwood floors and stone landscaping borders. We hope you will most of all enjoy the historic charm and unique piece of history that this property represents.

Enjoy your mornings or evenings on the balcony, which offers a peaceful retreat with lovely views. Whether you're sipping coffee or simply taking in the fresh air, the balcony is a perfect spot to relax and unwind. To really create an inviting atmosphere, open the doors for a gentle crossflow breeze through the house.

One of the best aspects of Waverly Cottage is the location. We’re surrounded by the boundaries of the National Park (it’s across the street) and literally steps (2 minute walk with steep walking paths along the way) from all of the major sites in Harpers Ferry (less ¼ mile from John Brown’s Fort). We’re also just a short 5 minute walk from the Appalachian Trail. Bring your walking shoes!

We often take our three little kids to the cottage, so we're very family-friendly. Unfortunately, we don't allow any dogs or cats in the cottage.

Please note: For the safety of all our guests and furry friends, Jefferson County requires that any pets brought to the property be up to date on their rabies vaccination.

Our cleaning team sweeps the deck, stairs, and walkways before each arrival, but due to the natural setting, you may still notice some leaves, pollen, or similar—especially during certain seasons. We appreciate your understanding as nature tends to leave its mark, no matter how often we tidy up!

Our AC is currently taking a little break, but repairs are already scheduled and should be completed soon! Thank you for your understanding—we’re excited to host you and make sure you have a great stay in the meantime.

Beyond Historic Harpers Ferry, we love how close to everything we are! Fantastic hiking trails, kayaking and tubing on the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers, and dozens of amazing little shops, restaurants, and wineries -- all within a 20 minute drive.

False advertising

Dirty and grimey nowhere close to VRBO pictures. Ants on the counter and promised parking compromised. Shower curtain full of mold and scum. Don’t stay here. Host very sorry but did nothing to help

In the heart of town.

This historic house right off the main streets of Harper’s Ferry makes you feel that you are right in the middle of the history of the town. The host was extremely attentive, and the home was definitely charming. I would stay here again.

Great way to experience Harpers Ferry

This was a return trip for us, the time before we stayed at the Clarion. It was a treat to be staying right in Harpers Ferry this time and not have to worry about parking. The house was lovely and the property manager was friendly and communicative. We will stay here again!

Too short of a stay

Family is looking forwarded to a longer stay in the future. Great get away from the city rat race. Loved being able to walk everywhere insteading of driving. First VRBO experience but so much easier than dealing with hotels.

Great stay in Harpers Ferry

Very nice property within a short walk from Harpers Ferry historic district. Great location but streets are up hill “both ways.” A little rough on my old knees. Host is excellent and keeps property well maintained. Would definitely stay there again.

The property was only a 5 min walk to Jefferson stone on the Appalachian trail. Unique home. A few maintenance things but we saw a lot of deer in the yard and overall wonderful, relaxing stay.

Harpers Ferry

Great location. The loose rocks in the entrance are a trip hazard. None of the upstairs doors shut so no privacy. But the kitchen amenities were great. Definitely not handicap accessible.

Superb Gem in Harper's Ferry

Probably the best possible location in the Harper's Ferry area. The cottage was wonderful, very quaint and comfortable. It's location is perfect, nestled in the woods and, as described, only walking minutes from the Harper's Ferry sights. A day did not go by that we did not see wildlife in the back or front of the house. Tony was the best host we've had in VRBO.

walking distance to so many things! Restaurants, hiking shopping! This adorable house is perfect for discovering Harpers Ferry. We had some great meals and took some great hikes in this beautiful little town. I have stayed at many VRBOs but the communication I got from the owner was one of the best. I have had so far..

Adorable Historic Home

We had the pleasure of staying at this property over a long holiday weekend and were delighted by the house. It is so charming and filled with special historic touches, but still has all the modern updates and amenities. And the location cannot be beat. You can park your car and not move it the entire weekend as downtown is a mere 5-minute walk away. Hiking trails are also all easily accessible by foot, as are all the local shops and restaurants. The owners were also very responsive, and even though we had zero issues during our stay, I'm sure they would have responded right away if there was anything amiss.

The Waverly Cottage was not what we had anticipated, primarily due to inaccuracies in the property's listing and several maintenance issues. While the location was nice, these problems significantly impacted our comfort and overall experience. The most significant issue was the misleading description regarding the bathroooms. The listing indicated two full bathrooms, a key feature in our decision to book for our group. However we discovered there was only one full bathroom and one half bath which led to considerable inconvenience. Furthermore, the shower was in the master bedroom which was very inconvenient for people staying in the other rooms.Beyond this primary concern, we encountered several other issues that detracted from our stay:- The kitchen light flashed on and off constantly, making the kitchen difficult to use safely (we suspect a faulty dimmer switch.). It never worked for the duration of our stay. We notified the property manager, but nothing was done while we were there.-The back porch felt shaky and unstable, raising safety concerns.-Many of the windows had holes in them-Some communication with the property manager was frustrating. I made a request to check in early (knowing that no one was staying in the cottage the previous night because we received an offer to check in early) and after being told he would get back to me I got a canned text later saying check in was a 4:00.-Directions for the wifi were completely incorrect

I live in DC with my wife and three young kids. I love camping/hiking, drinking (and sometimes brewing) great beer and wine, exploring new restaurants and shops, and traveling all over.

What makes this property unique

We spent years searching for the perfect getaway, and wanted to be close enough to DC that we could do a day trip. We fell in love with the area – and Waverly Cottage in particular. We love how cute and cozy our cottage is, and all the fun outdoor activities we can enjoy year-round. :)
