About this property

Miss Ruby’s Mid-City • our historic home

Welcome to Miss Ruby’s Mid-City. We are in a safe, quiet residential neighborhood just steps from a streetcar line, in the heart of New Orleans. A short streetcar ride takes you to the French Quarter or Audubon Zoo and walking distance to dozens of restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores and pharmacies, and night spots. Let us host you in our newly renovated 100+ year-old home, featuring original millwork, 14-foot ceilings, 2 parlors, pocket doors, and an open living space. Perfect for rest or play!

Mid-City is centrally located in the heart of New Orleans, a short walk or drive to everywhere. Our quiet residential neighborhood includes the Lafitte Greenway Bicycle and Pedestrian linear park, Bayou St. John, the BioInnovation District, and both Tulane and Veterans Administration Hospitals. Miss Ruby's is mere steps from the Canal Street streetcar line, which in one direction is a 15-minute ride to City Park where you will find a public golf course, the New Orleans Museum of Art, Sculpture Garden, peddle-boats for rent on Big Lake and bicycles too. In another direction, a 15-minute ride on the streetcar will take you to the French Quarter, the Aquarium of the Americas, and the downtown New Orleans riverfront.

The closest places to Miss Ruby’s for (good) eating and drinking are one street over, in the next block on Telemachus Street (pronounced, “təˈleməkəs”). Both are guest favorites. Katie’s Restaurant (3701 Iberville Street) and Liuzza’s Restaurant & Bar (3636 Bienville Street), are both casual, popular, and good.

For fabulous breakfasts, walk a couple blocks to Up&Adam, at 3903 Canal Street, or Fullblast Brunch, at 139 S. Cortez Street. (Don't miss the Tchoupitoulas Omlette at Up&Adam, pronounced "CHOP-i-TOO-ləs")

A scant 5 blocks from Miss Ruby’s is the commercial corridor centered around the intersection of Canal Street and Carrollton Avenue. There, you’ll find dozens of bars and restaurants and other businesses that may interest you, including the following:

• Trep’s (restaurant, with covered and heated outdoor seating), 4327 Bienville Street
• Felipe’s Mexican Taqueria, 411-1 N Carrollton Avenue
• Clesi's Restaurant (boiled and other seafood, sandwiches), 4324 Bienville Street, 504•909•0108
• Bevi Seafood (seasonal fresh-boiled seafood), 236 N Carrollton Ave
• Blue Oak BBQ, 900 N. Carrollton Avenue
• Five Guys (made-to-order burgers, hot dogs, plus free peanuts while you wait), 401 N. Carrollton Avenue
• Walgreens Pharmacy, 4001 Canal Street, 504.483•2486
• The Woodhouse Day Spa – New Orleans; 4030 Canal Street
• Office Depot; 309 N. Carrollton Avenue
• Massey’s Outfitters NOLA + Massey’s Kayak Rentals (sporting goods store); 509 N. Carrollton Avenue
• Louisiana Running and Walking Co. (LGBTQ+-friendly sporting goods store); 4153 Canal Street
• Petco (pets and pet supplies) 550 N. Carrollton Avenue
• The Urgent Care - Mid-City; 231 N. Carrollton Avenue
• Ochsner Health Center and Urgent Care; 4100 Canal Street

Personal dining favorites from this list include Trep’s for outdoor dining, Bevi’s Seafood Company for fresh seafood, Juan’s Flying Burrito, Felipe’s Mexican Taqueria, Wit’s Inn bar, Mr. Ed’s Oyster Bar and Mid City Fish House, Ikura Hibachi and Sushi, and Cafe Minh for Vietnamese cuisine.

For sweets, try Pinkberry for frozen yogurt, Baskin Robbins for ice cream, and Angelo Brocato’s gelato.

The 2022 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is a 15-minute walk or a shorter bike ride from Miss Ruby's, so you will not drive and park there any faster.

Why they chose this property

Miss Ruby's is a three-bay shotgun house typical of the local design. My wife, Kristin, and I acquired and renovated our house into its current sidehall shotgun layout. Then, a random conversation with one of the neighbors told us that our house had been Miss Ruby's Mid-City Bed-and-Breakfast decades ago, so Kristin and I adopted this name for the house as our own.

We renovated it top to bottom, reusing the original architectural antiques as we modernized the floor plan, closing some doorways and opening walls. We retained the original living and dining room parlors, still separated by the original pocket doors. We kept the original heart pine hardwood floors, 14-foot ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling windows that give the casual living areas a light, airy feel. We built a small addition in which to create the sidehall, a spacious new bathroom, and a laundry room. We kept the bedroom paneling and reused the original French doors, transoms, casings and other millwork, so that Miss Ruby's retains its original architectural charm.

After our renovation, Miss Ruby's now has the expected modern conveniences, including central air and heat, high-speed internet, WiFi, big-screen television, and other amenities.

Although you will be providing for many of your needs during your stay, we offer the essentials for items that you might forget or need before you can get to the store. If you need or want something during your stay, please let us know. We want your stay to be easy and comfortable.
