About this property

"Hillary Gardens" Hip Uptown/University Area Owner on Premises

City of New Orleans Permit #18STR-15546

Fully Furnished quaint and quiet 2 bedroom 1 bath shotgun double has all the charm of its 120 years, yet all the modern conveniences, including fully equipped kitchen, 2 bedrooms (queen beds), 1 full baths, and is very tastefully decorated. Located in the historic, quiet, and charming Uptown neighborhood of University/Carrollton, 4 blocks from Tulane University, 5 blocks from the streetcar line and 20 minutes to the French Quarter. The University/Carrollton neighborhood has the wonderful Maple Street corridor and the eclectic-hip Oak Streets all within walking distance or a bike ride!! Both offer dozens of wonderful restaurants, bars, coffeehouses and boutique shopping. Just minutes to Audubon Park, the Universities, Downtown or the French Quarter by streetcar or bus.
Master bedroom has 2 large built out closets, and a queen size bed. The second bedroom has a queen size bed as well. Internet, WiFi, and cable TV for your convenience and entertainment. All-White high thread-count fine linens and towels. High-end super comfortable mattresses with extra-comfort protective washable covers and duvets. Fully stocked modern kitchen with fridge, coffeemaker, microwave, dinnerware, toaster oven, beverages in refrigerator, single all stainless sink, dishwasher and professional series appliances, & gas range. Dining/Breakfast area adjacent to the kitchen.

The bathroom has the original claw foot tub/shower combination which is charming and I do like guests to know this in case they have difficulties climbing in and out of it.

The unit is 1,100 square feet fully furnished. Tradition holds that the name "shotgun" derives from the notion of firing bird shot through the front door and out the rear without touching a wall. The term itself postdates the shotgun's late-19th-century heyday, not appearing in print until the early 20th century. Since you have to walk through one room to get to another, the home is not completely private from one bedroom to the next, but more semi-private. Doors cannot be shut off as it hinders the flow of the central A/C system.

The laundry room is stocked outside in rear shared yard with high-efficiency full size washer and dryer.

Owner lives on premises. 4 people max (no exceptions), no smoking inside and off street parking.

Please ask if you have a special budget you are working with and I will see what I can do to help you out.

Great stay, great neighborhood!
Hillary Gardens was the perfect spot for our long weekend in town! I spent a lot of time in this neighborhood 15 years ago and was pleased to find it mostly unchanged. Walk to Lebanon’s (maybe my favorite restaurant in the US), Jacque Imo’s, Louisiana Pizza Kitchen, Rue De La Course, and the St Charles street car to head just about anywhere else in the city (the walk up Willow St was the best route at night). The duplex was super clean, and necessary amenities were provided including some soap, coffee, paper towels, and toilet paper. As others have mentioned, the claw foot tub and shotgun floor plan should be considered if you have mobility issues or are traveling with companions whose bedroom you wouldn’t feel comfortable walking through on your way to the kitchen. I specifically wanted to stay in a shotgun to share this unique type of home with my husband, who hadn’t experienced it before. We arrived late on our arrival date and departed early morning at the conclusion of our stay, so we never met the owner but communication was excellent and check-in was extremely easy. We’re returning in a few months and will be likely to stay here again!

Golf and Culinary Visit to NoLa
My friend and I enjoyed this two bedroom property with living room, dining room and kitchen. It’s a traditional New Orleans shotgun house that’s been very nicely renovated. The owner grew up in the house, lives in the adjacent unit and was very friendly and helpful with parking. It’s a very good location about five blocks walk to the S. Carrollton streetcar, and it was interesting to be near the Tulane and Loyola campuses. No negatives.

Great location! Beautiful home.
Close to restaurants on Carrollton and a short drive to Magazine, St Charles and the Quarter. Melinda is a wonderful host. Great tips for parking and enjoying Mardi Gras and all that New Orleans has to offer. Safe, quiet neighborhood. The local kitties are a nice bonus!

Wonderful home with character near Tulane
This shotgun home is spotless. The owner is very responsive and helpful. The beds super comfortable and it is very quiet at night. If you are visiting Tulane the location cannot be beat. We were seeing all the tourist sites in NOLA and found it easy to do from here.

“Way down yonder in New Orleans In the land of dreamy scenes There’s a garden of Eden You know what I mean.” - Louis Armstrong

I have loved New Orleans since the moment I laid eyes on it which is part of the charm being a true New Orleanian!!

My parents were born and raised here as well and I was fortunate to have been offered to buy the family home my Dad grew up in so this little shotgun has a special piece of my heart.

I attended Loyola University just a few blocks away and worked in the hospitality industry as a wedding & event planner for 15 years. I know all the secrets our city has to offer and would love to share them with you.

Why they chose this property

I believe that creating a space for guests in my home involves more than providing a comfortable place to sleep; it's an opportunity to make them feel welcome and ensure that their time spent with me is memorable. If a guest needs anything I am right next door and am happy to lend a helping hand. Sitting in my backyard with guest sipping some Coffee & Chicory in the mornings is very enjoyable so bring your favorite PJ's! No make-up required!

What makes this property unique

Anyone who has been to New Orleans knows that it is a unique, remarkable, one-of-a-kind city. Carrollton is a part of New Orleans that is uptown from the French Quarter. It is on higher ground than the area of New Orleans that was damaged in the Katrina hurricane, so Carrollton went undamaged. Carrollton is at the end of the St. Charles streetcar line and the other end is Canal Street. Carrollton is home to Tulane University and Loyola University. Many University employees reside in Carrollton including professors, teachers and students. They patronize the many businesses and restaurants that are nearby because this is a mixed residential/commercial neighborhood. Carrollton's location is a 20 minute drive to the French Quarter. Carrollton has many interesting restaurants, shops and music venues, the French Quarter is generally a more touristy area. Carrollton was incorporated in 1833 and still has much of the same Victorian residential architecture. Some of the historical sites in Carrollton are Old Carrollton City Hall and Palmer Park, which has a craft fair on the last Saturday of the month. This event is called the Arts Market of New Orleans and features live music also. Residents and tourists find this event to be great fun. You can check out some of the area's attractions at:
